“FINNEGANS IS FANTASTIC!!”
Reviewed 6 June 2012

I have stayed in a number of Hostels over the years and can honestly say that Finnegan's is the most charming, quirky and friendly place to stay. Comfortable bed, ensuite, tea rooms, restaurant, all staffed by a team of lovely people who quite frankly couldn't do enough for us. They have responded to all our requests and bent over backwards to help us (especially when our car broke down!) If you want a boring run of the mill standard hostel then this isn't the place for you - if like me you like an eclectic mix of antique furniture, fresh flowers in teapots, old photo's and original features of a grand old house and plenty of character then I cannot recommend this place enough. EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY..by far the cheapest accommodation that we could find and perfectly located in the centre of town.

Stayed here with my partner and baby for two nights this week. Never have I been so disappointed with accomodation booked online.
The make-up of the business has clearly changed recently. Tea rooms have been added which are apparently lovely BUT are using the kitchen. We didn't really try to get in during the day as it was full of busy staff. It was locked in the evening but was opened on request. The gorgeous lounge mentioned so much in publicity is now part of the tea rooms and not somewhere to relax. There didn't seem to be any tourists staying at all and we felt it was no longer really operating as a tourist hostel. Room was shabby and very basic. Carpet was filthy (not good for a baby to play on!) and we had to clear dead spiders etc off the bed. I don't think it had been used in a while! Sockets in the room didn't work. 'Continental breakfast' consisted of tea and toast and was not available before 9am. All payment was upfront and I was refused a receipt despite protestations (I have now got a credit card receipt from the restaurant to try and claim accommodation expenses!). No parking available - I was told on the phone about the spaces right outside the door but not that they were 1.20 per hour during the day!
Positives - bed was comfortable. Shower was wonderful. Location is central and great for park, museum etc.

We stayed in this hostel while cycling through the SW part of Ireland and found it to be such a beautiful building. Lovely tea rooms, and dining room, beautiful hallways, fireplace in our bedroom, everything was so clean. Right in the middle of the town with a gorgous park across the road, and the theatre just around the corner. The owner was very friendly and helpful. A place you must stay at. She really welcomes cyclists too. One of the highlights of our tour!

Where to begin?! A group of 10 of us stayed here for a week. What a terrific week! Great warm accommodations with lovely meals in the basement restaurant. Best was the tremendous welcome and true hospitality from the owner. She was so helpful and always around to make sure everyone was comfortable and content.

Lovely house & Great stay! Highly recommended!

having toured through the country, its always a beautiful to land in tralee...and for the little fees to board, mixed in to the homey atmosphere and warm welcome by the staff across the board - its always a terrific stay. Set in a Georgian house, on the main street located a stones throw away from a gorgeous park walk - its epic. Eileen is extremely friendly and welcoming, the rooms are pleasant and you can really feel the history surrounding this beautiful town flowing into the hostel itself...WELCOME HOME

Spent a week here and the food was just amazing! We had the nicest people to serve us food and spend the week with! Great location and the most beautiful basement restaurant. All people there are hard working and will make sure that you feel right at home! If you are going to stay in Tralee Finnegan's is the place to go! No other place would do for me.

Stayed here for a week with some friends traveling from North America and it was great! The staff are really nice and FRIENDLY!!!!!!! The rooms are very good. And the food is awesome! The restaurant is very VERY nice, and calm and relaxing. If I'm back in Tralee I would definitely come back here. Perfect place to stay in if you're looking for somewhere friendly and relaxing.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Finnegan's Hostel, Restaurant and Mary Anne's Tea Rooms, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Built by the Denny family in 1826 from the stones of the old Tralee Town Castle. It was converted into a cute quaint hostel whilst making the most of its original features. We have a mixture of dorms and rooms with forty beds in total. All the private rooms are en-suite. We also have two big rooms with open fireplaces, perfect for those winter days! Our cellar restaurant serves fresh seafood and steak and offers great value for money. We are just five minutes walk from the train (Irish Rail) and bus (Bus Eireann) station and we are just off the Main Street of Tralee town so its perfect for visiting the sites, or heading out at night! Across the street from us is the amazing Tralee town park. We are only thirty minutes by car from Dingle, the Ring of Kerry and Killarney. The history of the famous Kerry landmark Mary Anne's Tea Rooms: Mary Anne Hickey and her husband Bartholomew came from a farm in Crinne outside Castleisland, Co. Kerry. She had ten children and fifty-four grandchildren of which I am one. She loved baking and entertaining friends & family at her home and these tearooms are dedicated to her memory.
