“Strange mix”
Reviewed 8 August 2013

This hotel/hostel is really a strange mix. In the basement is an excellent and pricey restaurant. On the first floor is a charming tea room, with quirky deco and home-baked cakes and excellent coffee and tea. Then one goes up a floor, and the bedrooms are sub-standard. Charmingly awful would describe them best. There is a huge need for investment. However, it is situated across from a beautiful park, and right in the center of Tralee, so there are plus and minus points. On the whole, an experience we would accept for one night, but no more. Very friendly staff made the experience a pleasant one, and the meal we had in the basement restaurant was the best we had in Ireland.

It cost us €10 per person in the 10 bed dorm, but there were no other guests so it was amazing. Everything was nice and clean and we had a very comfortable stay! Breakfast was included in that cheap price - toast and coffee in the cute tea-rooms downstairs. Other food was available at a cost. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights at Finnegan's during our stay in Tralee and it was exactly what we were looking for! It is located right in the center of the town on a charming street located next to a beautiful park. Our room was so comfortable and I felt as though I was staying at a close friends house rather than at a hostel. The tearooms downstairs make an absolutely lovely place to relax, both in the morning with tea and a scone and in the evenings, where we spent our nights sitting by the fireplace. The staff was so sweet and helpful and made us feel so welcome during our stay there. Finnegan's hostel is the perfect place to stay while exploring the beautiful County Kerry and I will definitely go back the next time I am in Tralee!

You can tell Eileen takes pride in her establishment, as evident by both the hospitality and cleanliness this hostel exudes. Pristine, yet welcoming rooms fill the top two floors of this Old Victorian gem located in the heart of Tralee. In the morning, tea and scones are served in the charming tea room located right below the hostel. The tea room and its fireplaces are the perfect compliment to a good nights rest. The staff seem to genuinely care about providing the highest quality of customer service and strive to ensure that your stay is a pleasant and memorable one.

We travelled as a small group and stayed in this hostel for a few days during the summer. We had dorms booked for a week and ran away after three nights.

The negative bits
The lower part of the bunk beds have a base made of two to three old mattresses, probably an innovative view on recycling old furniture.
The ivy that grows on the facade also grows into the rooms via the cracks in the old windows. This brings a lot of wildlife into your bed so you can feel close to nature again. This is a very good occasion to become part of an exciting ecosystem as your body becomes the feeding ground for all the creepy crawlies.
In one of these very spacious dorms, the door can only be half opened as the nearest bed blocks it. Therefore in case of fire or panic, your chances of survival are greatly reduced. Anyway you won’t know there is a fire as the smoke alarm has been disabled. If you managed to overcome all these obstacles, you will then notice that there is no emergency staircase so if you are the third level, learn to fly.
My bed sheets kept the musty smell of the previous occupant.
The owner is patronizing and borderline insulting when you dare to complain about these far too mundane problems.
There is only one bathroom/toilet for a dorm of 6 to 8 persons. You better get organised!
As the tea rooms are open for customers during the day, there is nowhere to relax during the day. Anyway it is always sunny in Kerry.

The positive parts
The staff are nice and friendly (apart from the owner).
Bathrooms are surprisingly clean.
The hostel is situated in a beautiful late Georgian/Victorian building and is well situated.
The tea rooms are open for the guests in the evening as well as for breakfast.
The double rooms seem a lot nicer than the dorms. The people we talked to were happy about them.
Conclusion
I have heard that Dublin city is going to open a Museum on tenement life in the 19th century. My advice: forget the museum and come and experience the real thing in Finnegan’s dorms!

Room Tip: Try another hostel or get a double room.

Stayed here as part of a group of 8. We had one toilet and shower between the 8, the beds were rickety to say the least and I had to sleep on three matresses as opposed to a matress and base! One of our groups received a large number of mysterious bites during the trip which may or may not have happenend at the hostel. However the owner was adamant it did not and when asked for the number of a doctor seemed to become very defensive. We did not receive the breakfasts we were promised as the kitchen did not open until 8.30-9.00ish. The owner seems to busy with her "Tea Room" to pay attention to guests complaints. The list goes on and on. A very poor hostel!

Room Tip: Maeve Binchy would be spinning in her grave;)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Finnegan's Hostel, Restaurant and Mary Anne's Tea Rooms, Tralee, Co. Kerry. Built by the Denny family in 1826 from the stones of the old Tralee Town Castle. It was converted into a cute quaint hostel whilst making the most of its original features. We have a mixture of dorms and rooms with forty beds in total. All the private rooms are en-suite. We also have two big rooms with open fireplaces, perfect for those winter days! Our cellar restaurant serves fresh seafood and steak and offers great value for money. We are just five minutes walk from the train (Irish Rail) and bus (Bus Eireann) station and we are just off the Main Street of Tralee town so its perfect for visiting the sites, or heading out at night! Across the street from us is the amazing Tralee town park. We are only thirty minutes by car from Dingle, the Ring of Kerry and Killarney. The history of the famous Kerry landmark Mary Anne's Tea Rooms: Mary Anne Hickey and her husband Bartholomew came from a farm in Crinne outside Castleisland, Co. Kerry. She had ten children and fifty-four grandchildren of which I am one. She loved baking and entertaining friends & family at her home and these tearooms are dedicated to her memory.
