Croan Cottages
Reviewed 2 December 2009

We have stayed here two times; first time we had one 2-bed cottage, and next door our friends did too. We shared cooking and had a great time.

Second time we rented a larger house to accomadate 3 children and 4 adults. House was great, location is great.

The animals on the farm mean that you can walk out the door and entertain the kids.

Would go again in the future.

Both times we availed of the food service and were delighted at the quality, albeit a bit small.

We traveled around Ireland for almost 3 weeks in April, and we went self catering for almost all of it. Croan Cottages was by far the best that we came across in our 3 weeks of traveling.
The whole set up of the place is great, the grounds and cottages are clean, safe and well appointed and laid out, lots of open spaces to let the kids (3 and 5) run around, play and explore.
The biggest thrill for the kids was the wide selection of animals, giving it the feel of having your own farm on your doorstep. The animals range from what you would expect in the shape of two adorable dogs, to lambs and chickens as well as some ducks and guinea fowl! We still get told almost nightly about the chickens by the kids.
The cottages are run by a husband and wife team who themselves have young children, they have a real passion for the countryside and have obviously spent a lot of time in tailoring the cottages to suit the needs of those travelers looking for a peaceful idyllic retreat.
Nowhere is the attention to detail more obvious than in the extensive information pack we found in our cottage. It has a comprehensive overview of activities available in the area, events, attractions, places of interest. The kids section was really helpful as keeping two young kids amused is a full time job!
For adults the location in the heart of the country side makes it a great place to unwind, there are lots of suggestions for things to do in the information pack and there is a wonderful array of restaurants detailed in the information pack.
All said, we had a great time in Ireland, and Croan Cottages was the best on a great vacation.

We were greeted warmly by the owner albeit he was somewhat suprised to see us because he had us down as arriving the next day. Thankfully, one of the cottages was available and we weren't left stranded with a very tired baby. He took us through the cottage and explained the rules about recycling (and charges for not doing so) and answered all our questions with care. He also dug out some stair gates for the baby which I thought was very good - not provided at any of the other places we stayed on our trip.

The cottage itself was very nicely appointed and extremely comfortable. Downstairs comprised a large kitchen, dining area, sitting room and master bed/bathroom while upstairs had another bathroom and two more bedrooms. There was a small tv with a selection of DVD's as well as a bit of reading material for good measure.

We had no hot water when we arrived (due to the mix-up with our arrival date) but other than that the stay went without a hitch. The property is a bit off the beaten track but still within striking distance of Kilkenny if you have your own vehicle. The property is haven for animals which our boy loved, though there was an overly friendly peacock whose behavour was a little unnerving at times...

Apart from our initial meeting we saw very little of the owners which was fine as far as we were concerned. The only things I found a bit much were the fact that despite my requests to see the power meeting reading I was politely refused. I was assured it wouldn't cost much but I didn't like having to give my card details and consent to pay for something without being given the opportunity to see the inital meter reading.

Also, while I applaud the fact the owners are environmentally conscious the literature provided about the property read like a rule book that outlined punitive measures for non-compliance with their green policies. Again, nothing wrong with the policies but I think their approach could be a bit softer (i.e. gentle encouragement rather than threats of fines).

I would recommend Croan Cottages for anyone wanting to get away for a quiet break and thought that the accommodation and surrounds were first class. The service was a mixed bag, but we enjoyed our stay and thought we got good value for money.

We stayed at Croan Cottages for a week last month. What a great week we had! The cottage itself was spacious and very clean. The kids had a great time on the farm, and the location is great for daytrips to Kilkenny City or Waterford. The owners, Francis and Niamh, were very welcoming and helpful in all matters, and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable.

We would recommend this holiday to anyone, and I have no doubt we will return in the near future.

we just got back from Croan yesterday after a lovely week altogether!
The drive up to the cottages is through a beautiful tree-lined drive which leads to a fully restored, majestic period house. What a lovely way to arrive!! The cottages are small but set in a scenic crescent surrounded by mature trees, shrubs and plants, all very pleasant.
Our cottage was 2bedroomed which was ideal for my husband and I, our three year old and our four month old baby. We also brought our two dogs. The kitchen was equipped very well, however we did find that there was only one toilet roll provided in the bathroom and that the tv was extremely small with only two watchable channels as the reception was so bad. This may sound fussy but with a small child it is important to have a tv as the typical Irish weather can be so changeable!!There was also very bad wiring in the house. Our lamp had exposed wires, again very dangerous with children and there was a light actually dangling from it's fixture, wires exposed again. This was noted to the owner.
The only other issues we had was that the bins were not changed all week and there were no other bin bags provided. In the manual it mentioned that additional bags would cost 5euro if you chose not to recycle. We did recycle but as we had nappies to dispose of we felt that the owners should have made more of an effort to provide extra bags and a place for disposal. The owners were not easy to come by and we found them difficult to contact for minor things.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the electricity was not checked or agreed on by us and we were never told we would pay 30cent a unit either. The check out time of 9-10am was very early especially as they will not let anyone check in until after 4pm. In my opinion they should state this at time of booking and repeat at time of check in as we had to read this for ourselves in their manual on arrival.
It is a good location to travel and explore from and the welcome manual provides alot of excellent details of restaurants, places of interest and a weekly guide. We found this very helpful and great for planning days out with the children and dogs.
All in all though it was a very enjoyable trip.

Hi and thanks for your review.

We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your family holiday at Croan Cottages!

I just wanted to quickly respond to a couple of points in the review:

The TV in your cottage was a temporary one while the larger tv was being repaired - sorry I thought we mentioned that. The larger tv is now back in the cottage.

We hope the DVD player provided (along with the selection of DVDs we offer) provide enough entertainment for young kids & adults during those rare Irish bad weather days;-)

Thanks for pointing out the loose lamp fitting the problems you identified to us were fixed that same day.

The bins can be taken away from the cottages at any time (or can be dropped in to the large bins by you). We just need guests to let us know when they want them taken away - we don't like to let ourselves in to the cottages while they are occupied unless we absolutely have to!

There is no extra charge for bins or bin liners. The 5 Euro charge is only applied if guests choose not to recycle at all. We apply this to encourage everyone to do their bit in reducing the amount of waste which goes to landfill.

We were surprised to hear that we were 'hard to come by' as we live on site;-) There is always plenty to do outside so perhaps we were in the walled garden or up with the animals when you were looking for us?

The electricity charge is mentioned in the terms of booking sent to every guest before they arrive and is also mentioned in the welcome folder. Charging for Electricity usage is standard for all self catering in Ireland and in the UK. We obviously keep our charge to a minimum and charge only enough to cover the cost of supply.

As for the check in and check out times - unfortunately this is something for which you 'can't please all of the people all of the time' - everyone wants to check in early and check out late;-) Unfortunately when you have 5 cottages to clean and fully service in just 6 hours, this isn't always possible.

Again the check in and check out times are mentioned on our website, in ther terms sent to guests and in the welcome pack in the cottage.

Thanks again for staying at Croan Cottages and again we are delighted to hear you enjoyed your holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back to Croan!

Francis & Niamh

We really had a lovely time at Croan, the place is absolutely beautiful and we loved every minute of our stay. The "wildlife" was something to behold and our dogs were mesmarised by the peacock family. Our little girl enjoyed it especially seeing the animals so close. We also enjoyed the great walks. The food was also excellent and "finished it off" on the Sunday night.
Hope to return in the future,

Highly recommended.

We stayed in Croan cottages last weekend. The location is fantastic (although it is expensive to get to and from Kilkenny City - €35-40 each way). The farm is charming, the animals (especially the beautiful dogs) are wonderful. We ordered their cottage cuisine one night, which was fantastic (expensive, but very tasty). The cottages were spotlessly clean and claimed to be ecofriendly, which I believe.

However, we found the owners' attitude just a little lacking in hospitality. They were never rude, but never exactly welcoming either.

They were good to us and gave us the first night (when just two of us were down) included in the price, but they were shabby in a couple of things:

1. We were not invited to read the electricity meter with them. This was included on the card (and mentioned in their tome of a folder provided in each cottage), but it should have been explicitly stated upfront. The charge was not excessive, but it would have been nice to be told.

2. The checkout time is 9am-10am. This was not told to us. Again, we spotted it in the folder. They let us check out late, but we should have been told. There is, according to the folder, a charge of €25/hour late checkout fee.

3. Only two rolls of toilet roll in one cottage for the weekend (for three women) and one roll in the other. This shouldn't be something we needed to ask for (and in the end, we bought our own).

4. No radio provided. Not everyone wants TV (especially German satellite TV!!). I'd rather have a radio/CD player than a TV/DVD on holiday.

5. They demanded FULL payment in advance of our stay. (We booked two cottages.) My Mum, who booked the trip, felt a little hassled for payment by them.

All in all, I think this location works for a short break, but that's all. It's not great if you want to go out in Kilkenny as it's just a litle too far. And I don't think it would be wonderful for children - once they've patted the dogs, admired the lambs and wondered at the pigs, that would be them done. Some children's facilities would be a plus.
