“Well worth the time, great price, accessible”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2014

The reason we came and stayed in Kilkenny was to see the Castle and we were not disappointed. The renovation that has been done is incredible, beautiful. The attendants were all very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions about the Castle. They brought the Castle to life for us. It costs very little for admission and you could spend most of the day seeing all there is to see.

“Kilkenny Castle”

The Kilkenny Castle was the best castle ever! It was decorated in the time period and gave a great history lesson as you toured it.

This is one of the many places to visit for free if you get the Irish Heritage card.It is well worth the 1-2 hours to see the rooms and get a quick tour.
They have a lovely view and rose garden.

“Gorgeous on sunny day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014 via mobile

The grounds of the castle are absolutely gorgeous, especially on a sunny day. The castle can be quite busy with groups, so take a self guided tour. It's beautifully restored and the rose garden is lovely.

“Travel back 800 years in a city full of history and character”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

This castle is especially beautiful on a fine sunny day. Itis located by the river Nore and is outstanding presence makes it a focal point of the city. There is a beautiful parade area on approaching the castle with a beautiful entrance. It is not like other castles in that there are 3 towers and only 3 sides. One side opens out into a huge well maintained parkland. It is definitely the pride of the city when you see how well this attraction is maintained from outside, inside and the parkland. The rooms are beautifully restored and you can well imagine life living here.

When you do go in I would advise you to go to the media room in the tower on the right hand side of the main gate as this really does give you the background of the castle. Unfortunately there are no tours given during the peak season so you do not get to hear the whacky stories or interesting facts that are not in the guide you use to navigate round. I was fortunate that there was a group who managed to find a lady to tell them about the picture gallery and I found it very interesting. There is no photography allowed in the castle interior which is a shame but understandable. However there are ample photographic opportunities on the exterior of the castle.

It is a great place for children as they can play ball in the parklands and it is suitable for picnics. There is also a playground there for children in the park. If you are feeling energetic you can walk along the river and the castle walls which gives you a sense of peace and you can feel yourself go back in time. There is an electric atmosphere around this attraction as there are plenty of locals enjoying the walkways and park and there are tourists visiting the castle who later mingle when walking through the park.

There is a small coffee shop located in the main kitchen. It is simple food but nicely priced and tasty. However the downside to this is that it is one of the exits out of the castle and it is a part of the castle so there are plenty of people coming in to see it or leave the castle. If you are looking for peace then this is not the place. could get your food and eat outside if you wish.

Would definitely recommend a visit to the castle if you ever find yourself in Kilkenny.
