“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2009

I stayed in Hotel Kilkenny over Valentines Weekend in 2008 with my boyfriend. We arrived in Kilkenny in the early afternoon and had no problems finding the hotel, it is located close to the town centre maybe 10/15 minute walk, which would be enjoyable in good weather. We checked in without any problems, the reception staff were very nice and helpful with any queries. The room which we booked was beautifully decorated. The colour scheme was romantic and soft. As it was Valentines weekend, my boyfriend booked a package that included champagne, chocolates and rosepetals strewn over the bed. All in all I think it cost €290 for two people for two nights including this package. As a special treat i do think it was worth it. The room was a deluxe room and had a king size (very comfortable) bed, double doors out onto a mini patio area, very comfy slippers and robe, plazma tv and very nice bathroom with large well lit mirror. We had dinner in the restaurant on the first night there, it was nice - very busy. On the second day we had lunch in the hotel bar, I would not recommend this as it was very slow service and the food was really not worth the wait. We stayed in the hotel bar on the Saturday night as there was hotel entertainment and a special cocktail night. This was good fun as the hotel had two men who have won awards for cocktail making internationally showing the tricks of the trade. The crowd in the bar were invited to have a go of their own, my boyfriend won the 'competition' in the end taking home a bottle of vodka and cocktail shaker and dvd pack! The bar has a good outdoor heated patio area, good for smokers who dont want to be in the freezing cold. The hotel has a very good leisure centre with a gym swimming pool sauna and jacuzzi room, possibly more that I dont know about. There was also a small hair salon on site, I used this and the women in there were very nice. Possibly a bit cramped in size but not a real problem. I think there was also a beauty treatment area? The parking at the hotel was very good. I do not see why there would be too many bad reviews at all of Hotel Kilkenny. There was a very mixed clientele in the hotel, I would recommend it to any one without hesitation. On the Saturday night we had dinner in the Italian restaurant 'Ristorante Rinuccini' in the town (as recommended by my bf's mother) really would recommend it, fab food and really romantic and intimate. http://www.rinuccini.com/ Kilkenny Castle is also a must see. Lovely grounds for a walk.

Got a good last minute deal at less than 100 euros for a double B&B. Arrived at 2.30pm, and headed off into Kilkenny while the room was being cleaned. First thing i noticed about the room itself was the size of the bed. Just a normal double bed. 4'6" which was tiny compared to our super king at home. Leisure center was great. The bar has the potential to be so much better. They had the nicest section by the fire all blocked off for some reason. 1 person behind the bar itself is not adequate, especially when there were up to 5 people waiting for an order.
The food was mixed. My own fish and chips were excellent, whereas my wife's 'confit of duck' was inedible - we sent that back - no word of apology or anything. Breakfast the next morning was good. Not a great choice of breads etc, but the hot food was nicely cooked. Overall, yes it was good value for money, but i wouldn't be rushing back there. Seemed to lack atmosphere and warmth.

Stayed as part of wedding party. Charged 185 euro as special "wedding rate". Would ,nt allow us to check in till 4 pm even when I pleaded we had two small kids with us. Room was musty and damp, bathroom not clean. NO hot water in room after 9pm. Complained at front desk but may as well be talking to wall. Will never return.

I stayed in this hotel for one night over the weekend and i have to say that i will definately be returning to hotel kilkenny if ever need be. The room looked pretty much identical to that on the website except there were no double doors, just a huge window. I think the room i stayed in was a deluxe room and so can't comment on the standard hotel rooms. The bed was huge and the bathroom was fab, the only complaint with the bathroom being the size but to be honest the room more than made up for it in terms of space. The shower was really nice as it had one of those huge shower heads which i always like. There was one tiny thing that irritated me as i tried to sleep though, i think it was the air conditioning but it was quite loud and could not be turned off as far as i could see and this would probably be an issue to a light sleeper. The breakfast was very nice, i had the full Irish. And the staff (bar perhaps reception) were extremely friendly. When i was leaving my room in the morning all the cleaners would smile and say good morning, the staff in the breakfast room were great aswell, very quick service considering the amount of people that were in there but never made me feel like they were rushing me. Overall, great experience, will definately return!

  • Liked — the room, especially the shower
  • Disliked — the constant air conditioning noise

Throughout our stay the staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was big and comfortable. However the sound insulation is very bad, I could constantly hear doors banging the whole time. I didn't get a good nights sleep the whole weekend. The bathroom was very basic and a bit dirty. And it was really annoying when the toilet roll kept falling off the toilet roll holder... But what really annoyed me was that our weekend package included an evening meal. However when we arrived at the restaurant we were presented with a reduced menu with very little choice. If we wanted to order something from the main menu we had to pay more. I do feel that this was very misleading as it did not mention the reduced menu in the terms and conditions of the booking.

Visitors to Hotel Kilkenny are greeted by a marble-clad lobby, and soft music, but this is an establishment that badly needs to examine itself. The staff in the bar were abrupt, and sharp in their tone with customers; the building itself is a warren.
However, the bedrooms in the new wing of the hotel (I can't speak about the old section) are a joke. A couple in the room next to me were audible as they talked late at night: talked, not shouted. To cap it all, the hotel has "Do Not Disturb" signs that talk about Snooze Kilkenny. Not unless you are one deep sleeper, you won't. Why is it that Irish builders are incapable of building something that has more than the consistency of Kleenex?

  • Disliked — Dreadful soundproofing in the bedrooms

While the hotel itself is fine and the kids club is great, I was misled by the receptionist on the cost. Most hotels charge €40 for a kids club which includes their dinner. Not so at the Hotel Kilkenny, be careful when they say “they will get their dinner at 5.30” and omit to say that the dinner is extra – an extra €13.50 a child per night. I hate being ripped off, if they were up front about it, I might have paid but we could have had a dinner together as a family in the bar, and it would have been cheaper.

Having read previous comments on Trip advisor about the hotel, I panicked and phoned in advance, mentioned the comments and trip advisor and pleaded for a “nice room”. We got a nice room, absolutely clean, no staining as mentioned in previous posts. It was a four star quality hotel, which if they had not deceived us on the price we would return to.
