The River Court is the very best hotel in Kilkenny if you want to explore this fascinating city on foot. We're both disabled, but found it relatively easy to wander round the shops, stop for a cuppa (or a pint) and chat with shopkeepers, serving staff and other tourists. We found plenty of seats to just sit and watch the world go by.
Wednesday night was a bonus, because we noted a night of Irish dancing, music, singing and storytelling at the Castle; this is on every Wednesday night, and is performed by such an enthusiastic mix of talent; both young and our age......
The River Court should rightly be proud of their 4 stars; nothing was too much trouble, and all staff were friendly and accomodating. The pool/spa is open all day and we swam a few lengths, relaxed in the jaccuzzi and/or steam room, had shower, then did it all again, and again! Perfect. The reason for the only 4 score was that the jaccuzzi would benefit from 2 non slip handles for less able-bodied guests to pull against when entering or leaving. Also, a drinker would save the pool attendant having to fill water bottles for us.

Room Tip: Request a room at the back for peace and quiet, and views of river and castle.

Arrived at the hotel at 3pm, we knew the booking was at 4 but tried to book in at this time as this was the time our train arrived at. The room wasnt ready and we were told to come back at 3.30pm and it would be ready. It wasnt so we finally got checked in after 4pm, most of the afternoon gone by then. Got to our ''double room'' and was very dissapointed with it, 1 double bed and a single bed which we didnt need and this took up more space in the room. The bed was not very comfortable either. The room was quite warm so we opened our windows to a certain extent..we were then left a note in our room to say not to have the windows open unless we had mesh outside our window, as the flies from the river come in. The bathroom was also small. On the positive, the hotel staff were friendly and the hotel is central in the town.

I booked two friends to stay here on the June Bank Holiday weekend through Travel Republic (wouldn't touch them again with a barge pole) ....when they rang on the Thursday to see what time check in was, there wasn't any booking for them, even though the money was taken out of my account!!!. I spent the next two days following them up and eventually had to book them in to a B&B....Noone has taken responsibility for this mistake and I definately won't be recommending the Rivercourt Hotel to any of my friends again....DISASTER!

On our stay had a eryfamily meal in the Kilkenny River Court Hotel. Disgraceful is all I can say. Firstly there was nobody to take our order as we were told they were short staffed due to a wedding ongoing in the hotel. Hardly our fault! Eventually the chef himself was racked down and came to take our order. The menu was a complete joke. No steak on the menu, when asked for a mixed grill from the chef, the reply was 'what is that' 'Is it chicken and chips'!!! The service in fairness was fast but the food itself was dire. Fish that was so bad it was unedible. Simply batter with a few fish bones thrown in. Spring rolls for €9 consisted of a single spring roll. Presentation overall was very very poor. Will certainly not return to this place and would encourage anybody thinking of dining here to run a million miles!!!

We stayed here in january so kilkenny was a good bit quiter than normal.
The hotel itself is located right in the centre of town, there's parking in the hotel.
At a cost though, 3 euro's a day. This should be included in the room rate.
The hotel is really nice inside, fine big rooms, nice bar, would be great in the summer as there's a really goood outdoor area overlooking the river.
The hotel has a fairly basic pool and sauna but it does the job.
Overall a really good hotel and would stay here again.

It might not be a good idea to stay here if you are a light sleeper. It would be a great place to have your wedding but not a great place to stay if there is a wedding taking place(unless your having a boozy weekend- you wouldnt notice then!).
We were looking for a chilled out weekend to recharge etc but left the place exhausted after 2 sleepless nights.
I thought the breakfast might be worth the extra money but it really was very ordinary. I didnt like the way the hot food was self service rather than made to order particulary when you are paying a high price but maybe that is just me. Also since we were awake all night we tried to watch films on the tv but could not hear the thing due to the noise from the wedding and a sound restrictor on the tv. Clever.
Good things about the hotel- the pool and gym are small but a great asset and run very well. An extremely comfortable bedroom. A lovely beergarden looking over at the castle.
Conclusion: Kilkenny is very small, you will probably get a better service and a better rate a few minutes walk down the road but you do sacrifice the views and the location. Its not worth the extra cash.

Room Tip: A room with a view comes with consequences (noise)
