Stayed on a pamper package. Nice room and bathroom with lovely toiletries. Impressive breakfast buffet with lots of options. Seemed to get busy from 9.45am but hotel was fully booked during our stay. Great meal and efficient service in Yindee's. Loved the outdoor hydrotherapy pool in the spa. Pleasant walks around the grounds. Short drive ( about 5 minutes) to Kilkenny city. Very helpful and friendly staff.

Booked this hotel for my birthday. We booked the romantic two night break over two nights. We arrived on Friday evening and on entering the hotel the first thing we noticed was how cold it was. Check in was smooth and the clerk showed us to our room. As we walked down the corridor to our room it was still cold. On entering our room it was still cold. I asked for and got a heater for the room but this is not what I expect from a four star hotel. On booking the room I asked would we have internet access. I had to request a lead from reception for this to work and it was very unstable and had to be set up in the hallway of our room.

We were supposed to get a champagne breakfast on our first morning and this did not arrive.

We ate in Yindees restuarant on our first evening and this was fine and got room service on our second evening and this was fine also.

First impression of this hotel is that when you drive into the entrance, you feel like you're definitely in the Irish countryside, with horses left and right, you keep drive and first thing you see is a very old style Irish mansion, with the Lyrath entrance behind it. Walking in to the hotel, I was immediately surprised as to how modern looking the interior of the hotel is and how expansive the rear area and the large number of rooms here. I guess I was expecting a more "estate" type of feel and this is definitely not it. Not to take away from the hotel, because it was very nice.

Staff:
We weren't harassed as some of the previous staff was with our bags. Its probably because we travel light. The doorman was very helpful as was the check-in process. We self parked without issue and the check in process was speedy and the front desk clerk was Irish and helpful.

Room:
The room was HUGE and the bathroom was spectacular. LCD screen TV in the room and it was very clean, comfortable king sized bed, and a decent view out of the window.

Location:
The estate is located about 15 minutes outside of Kilkenny, but its an easy drive to downtown Kilkenny. Parking is a problem in Kilkenny, but we did find a spot. There is nothing you can walk to from the hotel.

Restaurant:
We ate at the on site pub, and while the waiter didn't come across as the nicest guy in the world, he took excellent care of my wife and I. I had a great pint of Smithwick's ale here and it put me in a good mood instantly. I had a hamburger here that was made with Irish beef and it was very good. Breakfast at the restaurant in the mornings was a traditional Irish breakfast and there was definitely nothing to complain about here.

Internet:
We had full blown internet coverage for free in the room and I was able to stream a movie from my home server back in the U.S. Good coverage.

Overall impression:
Although I was expecting a different experience, the hotel is beautiful and I would stay here again. Kilkenny is a beautiful city and I would come again.

We spent three nights at this hotel just after Christmas. Our overall impression of our stay was that the hotel is not a genuine 5-star hotel. We had dinner on the first night in Yindees and the food was quite good. The second night we had dinner in La Perla. Our first surprise was when we were seated and handed the menu. It appeared to be some sort of set menu but gave no indication of price anywhere. We assumed that there was also an a la carte menu but when we asked a waited we were told that this was the only menu available - 2 courses for €45 and 3 courses for €50!! This experience alone left a bad taste in our mouths as we felt that the management were taking advantage of their guests with this cynical ploy. The food when it arrived was reasonbly good but certainly not worth the prices charged by this hotel. Maybe the owners haven't heard that there is a recession and that they need to start offering value for money to their guest in order to entice them to return! The breakfast was decent enough, although it has to be said that we've had as good, if not better, food at less starred hotels in our travels. For instance, the pastries that were available were pretty tasteless. There are many 4-star hotels around Ireland offering far better buffet breakfasts than the Lyrath(Carlton in Kinsale and the Carlton in Bunclody being two of the best).
On the plus side, the bar-food(room service menu) was very good. We had dinner in our room on the third night in preference to another poor value for money visit to La Perla!
We didn't use the swimming pool but did use the gym several times during our visit. The first thing to point out is that this is not a "state of the art gym" as the Lyrath claim. The equipment is new, but it is a very small facility. There are two treadmills, one bike, one rower, one cross-trainer, ONE weights bench, and one multi-gym station. The equipment is fine but there just isn't enough of it for the hotel to claim that this is a state of the art facility. On one of my visits to the facility I was unable to use some of the equipment as there were two children playing around in there. They were far too young (10-12) to be using the equipment in the first place. I think that the hotel could do a bit more to improve the room they've dedicated as a gym and feel that it's misleading to call it a state of the art facility.
We found the staff quite helpful and friendly during our stay and we didn't have any negative experiences with them.
One very nice touch was the snooker room(not a full-size snooker table as the hotel literature claims). We played some games but one word of advice to anyone planning to visit who might like to play on the table.....bring some chalk!
Overall we enjoyed our stay there but it should be stressed that we spent most of our time lounging around the room eating room service and watching TV. The weather was terrible during our visit so we weren't able to stroll around the grounds which did look pleasant.
Overall I would say that I wouldn't be rushing back to the Lyrath, mainly because I don't believe that it offers the kind of experience commensurate with the rates/prices they are charging. I think that it is very overpriced and despite the hotel's claims, it is not a genuine 5-star. More like a good 4-star. If they were to lower their prices and to offer more value for money then I would certainly consider returning. The location is perfect with Kilkenny city just a very short drive away.

Except for the friendly Irish doorman, the staff at this hotel is rude, curt and not helpful. Most of the staff are German, and we had no encounters with Irish employees other than the doorman. The hotel is 15+ minutes from downtown Kilkenny. Although their advertising suggests that you will be staying at a lovely country estate, in fact the hotel is an ultra-modern, sterile facility without charm.

After being treated brusquely by the check-in clerk, another staff member was pushy in attempting to remove all of our luggage from the car, even though we said we could carry our small overnight bag without help. Ignoring us, the staff member proceeded to unload all of our suitcases on to a cart. We put the suitcases back into our car, but the employee grabbed our overnight bag in spite of our protests and insisted on carrying it to our room. This employee also summoned the valet parking attendant, even though we said we would self-park.

We requested an extra blanket in our room and received another half-bedspread instead. The white coverlet in our room was stained. We tried to print out our airline boarding passes in the business center, but the printer did not work. When we asked the staff for help, the response was that if we had a flash drive we could load the boarding passes on it and then have them printed at the front desk.

We had an early flight and had to check out at 6:30 a.m. There was no one on duty at the front desk, but a young man who was cleaning the windows came over to try to help us check out. There were erroneous charges on our room bill but he could not resolve this because he was not a desk clerk.

One would expect that a hotel proclaiming to be a 5-star facility would staff the front desk 24/7, have extra blankets, a functioning computer printer, and train their staff to be friendly.

We celebrated my father's 80th birthday with family and friends in the beautiful Lyrath Estate in Dec 2009. The staff, both in preparing the event and on the day from the Managers, waiters and chefs, were amazing. Their guidance and advice for layout of the rooms and indeed their suggestion for opening the XBar as a meeting location for the party of 70 was superb - we were treated like Royalty all day. The rooms in the old house were amazing and the staff were so helpful and indeed bringing christmas crackers and colouring books/crayons to the children was a wonderful idea (especially for the parents who got to enjoy their meal!!) The 4 course lunch was spectacular from the wide menu choice to the quality of the food and service to match. The presentation of the birthday cake was also a great surprise for Dad. The staff were so helpful throughout service and went over their duty with keeping the children happy and taking many a photograph. My family are still talking about it a week later. I would 200% recommend the Lyrath for any occassion for the romatic to family / business event. Unfortunately we could not saty over as the hotel was booked out. So I can't wait to get back there for a weekend and experience the whole package Lyrath has to over -- only 1hr 20mins from Dublin and less now tha tthe new motorway is opening mid Dec!!
