My husband and I stayed at the beautiful No. 1 Pery Square for 2 wonderful nights.
After negotiating the roads around Limerick city (many of which are one way) we found the hotel but continued to drive around for another few minutes trying to locate their car park. We gave up and decided to go in to ask. I was greeted by a lovely lady at reception who very helpfully came to the front door and directed me to the secure car park (as it turns out, the hotel car park is down a side street/ally - we would never have found it without the assistance of hotel staff).
After parking we returned to check-in, but unlike most hotel chains, there was no signing sheets or providing credit card details (although our stay was prepaid). Instead the lady just handed us our room key, and continued chatting with us. She was more interested in ensuring that we felt welcomed and relaxed rather than faffing about with paper work. After taking us to the lift (and carrying some of my luggage, which she insisted on), we were given a little history of the hotel and some of the information on the rooms, breakfast, etc. We were told that once we were settled in our room we were to come back to reception where she would provide tea and coffee for us after such a long journey (she also offered to bring it to our room if we wanted privacy).
When we returned to reception, the lady showed us into the Park Room, and brought us a very welcome tea, coffee, scones and jams (all lovely!). Even though she appeared to be the only member of staff around and she was very busy answering phones, seeing to other guests, and making tea and coffee, nothing was too much trouble. She was cheerful, friendly, chatty and efficient in what was a very busy afternoon period. (I'm sorry that I didn't get her name)
Later on that evening we met another girl at reception, who recommended a local restaurant for food (it was a Monday night, so the hotel does not serve any food other than breakfast on a Monday). Her local knowledge of restaurants was excellent and we had a great night out. Then on our return, she offered a night cap in the Park Room which was hard to refuse as it was like staying at a friend's house!!
Breakfast the next morning was fabulous. We were greeted by the lovely Kathleen who informed us about all the foods available on the buffet table - delicious spiced pears, organic yogurts, homemade breads, and the most incredible honey. This was followed by a cooked breakfast from the chef. We both opted for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs - beautiful!
Kathleen was full of interesting information on the local area and people, and gave us suggestions for our day ahead. She was friendly, thoughtful and kind. Truly gifted at her job and attentive to all the guests needs, yet still having a personal touch.
We also got an opportunity to talk with the chef as we had inquired about some of the foods used at breakfast - he was extremely helpful and courteous, with an obvious passion for well sourced quality food.
During our stay we treated ourselves in the hotel spa to 2 treatments each: hot stone massage and reflexology. We also had use of the thermal suite in the spa. Whilst this is not the best thermal suite we have ever used (primarily due to the fact that we prefer water features in a thermal spa, such as a hydrotherapy pool, vitality pool, etc, so we missed these), the ambiance of the spa was lovely and relaxing, with beautiful, natural decor. Also, the 2 therapists that performed our massages and reflexology were friendly and pleasant.
On the Tuesday evening we dined at Brasserie One (the hotel's restaurant). What a stunning and fabulous meal! The presentation of every course was beautiful, with a taste that was even better! There were not many diners in the restaurant (although, as it was a Tuesday evening this was not surprising), but that allowed for an intimate dining experience, and the waiter was very attentive and efficient. A wonderful fine dining evening!
We stayed in the "Swift" room of the hotel - all the hotel bedrooms are named after Irish writers or poets - a very quaint and intriguing idea. It has the impression of making your guest room seem more like a suite rather than just another numbered bedroom - very clever! Our room was indeed very well appointed, with luxurious fabrics and furniture all in keeping with the Georgian theme/feel of the hotel. The bathroom with its separate bath and shower, was also very appropriately finished and had a lovely calming feel. The bed was so large and comfy and made for 2 great nights sleep.
All in all, a perfect relaxing break in Limerick city! Wonderful staff and gorgeous surroundings. No. 1 Pery Square is most definitely a taste of true Irish hospitality!
