“Be sure to eat dinner here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2012

We had a lovely four-night stay in Scholars Townhouse. The first two days were mostly recovering from jet-lag, but we were very comfortable, and totally ready to go when we left Drogheda. Be sure to have the chicken pie for dinner. Breakfasts are everything you could ask for, and the service is great.

This hotel is nicely maintained. While everything is clean and shiny, there is a pleasant local vibe and a comforting old-fashioned quality to the place. The bar is good to sit in and the restaurant is above average and popular. Some good wine selections by the glass, though not champagne when we were there. There is a lift for wheelchairs.

A few disappointments: the bed was too short and the rooms were not particularly well sound-insulated. The couple in the room next to us certainly enjoyed themselves and made me feel old, but the disturbance (if that is the right word) did not last for long and is the sort of thing that could have happened anywhere. The TV in the room was tiny, but then we didn't even turn it on. The free wi-fi came in very handy instead.

We were there to see Newgrange and The Battle of the Boyne Visitors' Centre - both excellent. By the way, the hotel has paintings relating to the famous battle.

Visited Scholars for a Saturday night out with friends. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, great food. About 60 euro a head after all was said and done. It's a beautiful property, and we hope to stay at the hotel on our next visit.

Everything was great (eg food, service, decor) except the rooms are small, poorly fitted and a bit dingy. There was no bath, the beds and pillows were hard and you get neck ache trying to watch the TV. Even the 'Presidential Suite' was made up of small rooms in the same style. Its a shame that they are restricted by 'planning regulations' in that they are not allowed to alter the room sizes but they could be 'brighter' and better equiped. The staff were very helpful and polite.

Room Tip: An attractive town with a rich history. A good stopover for travelling north from the Dublin ferry.

My husband and I had a wonderful Valentine’s meal here last night. Upon our arrival we were shown directly to our table which in the usual Scholars standard, was dressed in crisp white linen, single red rose, and candle and to our surprise beautifully presented gift vouchers for a local spa and hair salon. Romantic music was playing softly in the dining room and we were offered a glass of champagne as soon as we sat down. Our appetizers were followed by a champagne and passion fruit sorbet. I enjoyed the lamb shank for the main course while my husband had the fillet steak, both were tender and delicious. We enjoyed a bottle of the house Merlot and my husband managed the desert. Scholars Restaurant was very busy with the waiting staff discretely pulling out all the stops to create a wonderful ambiance for this special night. But then again, I’d expect nothing less from Scholars. The historic town of Drogheda is full of great places to enjoy and this is one of them. If you get a chance to eat here take it!

Our meal which my wife & I had at Scholars on the 17th December 2011. We had booked for 8.30pm and were dining in the side dining room. Clearly this is a newly decorated room as there was a faint smell of paint however this was over looked as the room is excellently decorated & very comfortable as well. This was not our 1st time to dine at Scholars as previously we had dined & stayed over night in the hotel.

I had ordered the Scholars Risotto for main course. What arrived was the Seafood Risotto. I returned the Seafood Risotto. I received the correct order after 10 to 15 minutes of waiting, I can appreciate this, as it is good food & not fast food at Scholars but my wife had finished her meal before my correct meal had arrived.

Normally this would not be a problem as the atmosphere is very good but I had to ask on three separate occasions over the course of the meal for our wine to be refilled, when eventually I asked the waiter to leave the bottle beside us. Is it normal practice to have someone’s wine sitting on a far table from patrons?

Although there was two apologies made to us not one waiter approached us within the 15 minutes. At one point my wife called to a waiter at another table but received no response. So over the course of the 15 minutes we sat with empty glasses & were unable to order another bottle of wine due to the lack of waiters.

Finally I asked a female waiter for the bill as the mood & meal had been ruined. Then we were approached by another female waiter offering us desert which we confirmed we had already asked for the bill. To which we received an offer of a complimentary aperitif we turned this offer down as we had been sitting for over 25 minutes without a beverage at this stage.

I had written to the manager on 19/12/11 & suggested for future patrons one of which we will not be, is that Scholars supply diners with a “Wine Bucket” or “Wine Stand” for any wine they are consuming during their meal. Our final suggestion is that if a diner has returned food a simple “can I get you anything” while you wait for your correct food goes a long way. No response recieved.

Have opted to go to the Eastern Seaboard resteraunt from now on.
