“Great place to stay in Drogheda”
Reviewed 17 June 2013

Scholars Inn is first class all the way. From making our reservations, and them having respond to my booking mistake, to our checking out, everything here was very good. Scholars staff knows how to treat guests. It doesn't matter whether it's the bartender, the person at reception, your waiter or the guy trimming the bushes outside. They are there to serve you. The interior and rooms are also quite nice. (One minor thing, our room 115, was directly above the kitchen. So in the afternoon/evening, our room would fill with the aromas of whatever was on the menu that night. We didn't mind it, but some others might.) The bar and restaurant are also great. We ate in the bar, but you can order from the restaurant or from the bar menu. The only drawback is the town itself. It's a little downtrodden, but there are many sites nearby and this can be a great location for day trips. I highly recommend this property.

Room Tip: If you don't enjoy the aromas of cooking food, make sure you don't get room 115.

Visit Drogheda regularly for both business and family visits. I usually stay in the D hotel in Drogheda as it seemed most popular over the years but this time around I decided to go for Scholars for a change based on a good recommendation of course. But I must commend the staff because they really and truly are great, very attentive and caring from check in to check out and throughout service. An obvious sign of good management within hotel and I also seemed to notice the managers floating around at times which is also good to see as it shows they care, so really its always the little things that matter. The hotel is in a lovely old house with a stunning front and an inside to match. The food in both the gastro lounge and restaurant was perfect so hats off to the chef on that. I really couldn't find any fault in this hotel at all. You can say that the room is maybe a bit small, but again its an old house turned hotel so it should be expected. Will be back again even if it is just for the food. Also the painting on ceiling of restaurant is stunning.

Room Tip: Wine and dine within hotel as you will not be disappointed.

I loved spending the night at this lovely townhouse-inn. On a self-guided cycling trip, my husband and I arrived tired and a bit bedraggled, but were immediately put at ease by the friendly helpfulness of the staff who promptly took care of our bikes for the night. Our room and bath were very comfortable, although the high-sided tub was a bit of a challenge in getting in and out. We enjoyed dressing up and soaking up the warmth and Old-World-like atmosphere at the sophisticated bar that evening. We were later seated in a nearby dining area for dinner which was delicious as well as affordable. Breakfast the next morning was equally elegant. The management is commended on having everything so smoothly run and for having staff that truly caters to individual guests needs.

Scholars is a beautiful hotel with an abundance of character and charm. From the 4 poster bed to the abundance of oak panels, this is a very plush and comfortable hotel. The food is great, whether you eat in the restaurant or the gastrolounge. The wine was also top class. The staff were extremely professional and very helpful. All in all, this was an extremely enjoyable stay and I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone who is looking for something a bit different from your standard run of the mill hotel chain.

We stayed one night as it was close to Newgrange and it was a fantastic choice. Although the room was basic, the service and food more than made up for it. We were greeted by very friendly staff and it was one of the simplest check in procedures ever. We dined in the main restaurant and the food was outstanding as was the service. Similar experience for breakfast - could not fault the staff.

Lovely old style hotel. Staff were particulary friendly and attentive. Room was small but adequate. Had dinner in the bar - was very busy for a week night. The steak was great and the amuse bouche was gorgeous - pork belly and a scallop.

Breakfast was very good too.

Will be back.

We enjoyed a two-night stay at Scholars Townhouse recently and I really cannot praise it highly enough. Granted the rooms are compact rather than spacious but they are scrupulously clean and perfectly practical with tea-making facilities, large power showers and an abundance of piping hot water. The food was delicious and the staff are simply first class in their courtesy, service and attention to detail. The manager Mark was efficient, friendly and down-to-earth while his colleague (also Mark) was likewise pleasant and more than helpful, providing us with first class service...(I had in fact the honour of being the first member of the public to try his special signature chocolate liquer - which was like a warm creamy chocolate flavoured Baileys - mmmmmm!!:-) We didn't catch the names of the other staff on duty both evenings of our stay but they too provided really excellent service and demonstrated impeccable manners (one is a head waiter perhaps and the other a charming young man from Mauritius - if they read this... "you know who you are!"). Breakfast was delicious and again the service and friendly disposition of the girls who served this - as well as those who cleaned the rooms was excellent, really very impressive all round. I forgot to mention that Scholars Townhouse is also a beautiful and stylish place - I simply cannot praise or recommend it highly enough!!
