“Good value room with a few niggles”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2014

Booked on line for business trip. The receptionist couldn't find the booking, but took the details from my Ipad and honoured the booked price. The room was a good standard, and the excellent bed had feather duvet! The light switch arrangement was overly complicated, but not a serious issue, and the room, as is often the case these days was far too hot on arrival. The free wireless internet was provided by Bitbuzz, a nuisance as it requires registration, when you just want broadband access.
There is a small bar adjacent to reception, but no area to sit quietly and enjoy a drink, other than the reception area or restaurant itself. I could not find a residents lounge.
Breakfast was adequate, with no suprises, but the evening meal was disappointing, uninspired and relatively expensive.
The free car parking was welcome, and has easy access to the hotel (1st floor) directly - useful in wet weather. The location is fairly central, close to shops, and a short walk from the town centre.
The staff were helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms convenient for the car park. Lower numbers on each floor are nearer to the lift

Spent two nights in this hotel so convenient for Mayo General hospital visit. Staff so friendly, rooms with tea making facilities, biscuits as well!
Breakfast...great variety to suit all tastes and appetites.
Not the first time I had spent time there and wont be the last!
Well done to all concerned.

Myself and my work colleagues stayed here for two nights. On arrival check in was quick and the staff were friendly.

The room was modern, comfortable and had a nice flatscreen tv. The hotel also has parking in the multi-storey carpark next door which is very convenient.

Breakfast was decent with a good selection of hot food, cereals and fruit.

The hotel is around 5 mins walk from the centre of Castlebar and beside plenty of shops.

Overall if I was visiting Castlebar again I would definitely return the the Harlequin Hotel.

My partner and I were given a 2 night weekend break at the Harlequin Hotel at the beginning of November. It was great from arrival to departure!
We had a standard room which was to the side of the hotel as we had asked for a quiet room. It was very spacious with large glazing to one wall which meant it was very light (blackout curtains were provided!). There was a double and a single bed which you could walk around both sides of properly, lots of cupboard space and an area to hold your luggage that actually fitted real luggage! The decor was warm and fun - in keeping with the rest of the hotel which looks a bit like a homage to Christian Lacroix interiors in white.........The bathroom was well appointed with good fittings and plenty of room. In all, it was a room you would be quite happy to spend a rainy afternoon in or have breakfast in. The beds come with foam pillows and duvets as standard but there are alternatives available. My request for a down pillow and a sheet and blanket was immediately dealt with.
The staff are courteous and helpful. There are newspapers in the lobby for guests. The parking in the adjacent car park is free for guests and you walk directly into the hotel at level 1. The hotel was very busy the weekend we were there but it did not affect the service in any way. The dining room is screened off from the foyer and a small bar area. It has an open servery at one end and this is where you get your self-service breakfast. (In the evening this is closed but there is definitely a food smell discernible in the lobby and foyer at mealtimes - this was really our only negative comment). There is something for everyone at breakfast - mini croissants, toast, cereals, yoghurts and fruit as well as a full cooked breakfast. It was delicious and set us up for the day.
We had dinner in the hotel the night we arrived as we were tired and didn't know Castlebar. We had dinner there on our second night because the first was so good. The wine list is superb and good value. The food was generally really excellent (1 starter wasn't great on night 1) - well cooked light fish and delicious fillet beef.
Do not judge this hotel by its commercial surroundings or modern exterior - it is a great place to stay.

My wife and I stayed here for one night recently. Honestly it is difficult to fault the place. The room was very clean, well furnished with a very comfortable bed. We had a good bar meal in the evening and the breakfast the following morning was fine. The hotel has been extremely well designed in that none of the rooms is very far from lifts to the bar, reception and dining area. The staff are courteous and friendly. From the location point of view the hotel could hardly be better - the shops are a few metres away and there is a theatre next door! Had we not arranged to go to family the following day we would have stayed at the hotel longer. We certainly intend to return one day..

Room Tip: rooms on the first floor are handy for the car park

Stayed last night as was going to see Jimmy Carr. Lovely hotel, with excellent staff. There was a problem with our room & we were moved straight away to an equally nice sweet. Staff not to be faulted. Had a great meal in the restaurant & a lovely breakfast the next morning.
