“Excellent Wedding Hotel”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

We recently visited Knockranny house hotel for a friend's wedding. It was our second visit to the hotel for a wedding and it didn't disappoint either time.

Hotel Grounds
The grounds of the hotel are fabulous. Our room on this occasion faced out to the grounds and it was a lovely view. They are very well maintained.

Rooms
The room in the hotel was lovely. The bed was very, very comfortable. The styling is a bit old maybe but it is very clean and spacious.

Breakfast
The breakfast room has an amazing view of Croagh Patrick which would be enough to make me forget if the breakfast was poor...but it isn't, it's very good. Plenty of options with the buffet and full Irish breakfast from the kitchen.

As a wedding venue, we enjoyed it both times as guests. The main hall is very large (this wedding was 220 people), the dance floor is quite big and most importantly the bar is in the same room! (so people aren't off in a different room to the party). I can't comment on the noise created from weddings as I've been part of them both time but that would be a concern for me if I was staying and not part of a wedding.

The Location is perfect as it is right at the entrance to the lovely town of Westport. If you are climbing it is a 5 minute drive to the base of Croagh Patrick and the beach another few minutes past that.

The only complaint I have about Knockranny would be the price. Although the hotel is fabulous, both times I've just felt it was a bit pricey.

This hotel is beautiful, set on a hilltop. When we walked in they had a fire going. The lobby was like something out of an old English movie. Their rooms were a good size and very clean and we'll lighted. The Dining room was great with plenty of windows to enjoy their beautiful views. The bar area had plenty of comfortable seating. Their grounds were well manicured. The staff was friendly and professional. This is a must stay when in Westport Ireland.

Room Tip: Their standard is great. I would guess that an upgrade is fantastic.

Had a two night stay in the fabulous Knockranny House Hotel last week. Lovely quick check in with the nice receptionist making a fuss of our small daughter. We opted for a Grand Deluxe room, which was on the fourth floor. It really spacious & perfect for our three year old to stretch her legs with a run around :-)) The view from the room was as gorgeous as the room itself, as we were looking out onto a beautiful courtyard, with roses & lavendar right outside the window. We loved the big bathroom & all enjoyed the jacuzzi bath. There was also a big shower & double sink. The bed was easily the most comfortable that I've ever slept in. As we were unable to go out after our daughter went asleep we really enjoyed the comfort of relaxing on the comfy couch watching the TV & DVD.

The food was fantastic. On the first morning the staff on duty were quick to offer a high chair for our daughter, who is too big for one & when we said we didn't need one, immediately offered to bring a cushion for the chair she was sitting in. We had the full Irish breakfast, the sausages from a local butchers are delicious & well worth a try. There is also a great range of yoghurt, fresh & dried fruits, cereals & pastries available. There was a wedding in the hotel & on the second morning the breakfast service was extremely busy, but again the staff were as friendly & the food was served as quickly as on our first morning. We booked a table in La Fougere restaurant in the hotel on the second night of our stay. The food was outstanding & again the staff friendly, corteous & attentive.

We will definitely stay again.

Just returned from Westport after spending 3 nights at Knockranny following my Stepson's wedding. It's a wonderful hotel. Bedrooms are really spacious and luxurious. Food is of a very high standard. Didn't get a chance to use the Spa but several of the wedding party did and had nothing but good things to say. 230 people attended the wedding dinner and the food was impeccable, I don't know how they can achieve high restaurant standards for 230 people. It also has a Hairdressers which is very good. Thanks Knockranny!

Room Tip: Make sure you stay in the deluxe rooms.

Excellent hotel & grounds, stayed here for one night after climbing Croagh Patrick, check in was very fast, receptionist was friendly. Stayed in the Tower Suite on 1st floor, fabulous four poster bed which was the MOST comfortable night's sleep EVER, small sitting room area separate from the bedroom, big bath, bathrobes, trouser press, TV DVD & Stereo. The only thing that I could fault was the smell in the room when I first entered it, smelt like someone had just used the bathroom, but was fine once windows in room were opened after a few minutes, I'm a total germ freak & couldn't fault one thing in the room or bathroom, both were SPOTLESS. Lovely view of Croagh Patrick from suite, table & chairs if you want to order in food. Stereo & TV both worked fine. Breakfast was a lovely selection of cereals, fruit, breads & hot food from menu, I had smoked salmon & scrambled eggs which were very tasty, I even got second helpings!!! Found the night porter to be a little grumpy/smart arsy when he was asked for cutlery etc gave him wrong room number by mistake & rang down as soon as I realised only to be sternly told quite coldly "yeah he went up, fine he'll bring it up again" Found his attitude to be a little rude to say the least, but can't complain about the rest of the staff all were lovely & friendly. All in all expensive to stay in but well worth it!

Room Tip: Tower Suite!

Knockranny rooms are comfortable but have been caught out before going for the grand delux and having lovely room but no view having to keep curtains closed and walk down the " old peoples home " corridor! This stay had a good view and room, staff friendly although at times service poor maybe down to needing more staff on the floor. I had stayed in the hotel for two evening meals, the first although a standard enough choice was excellent, the reason I stay there, but on the second night obviously the chef was off which is necessary but if you go there for the good food you expect the same quality and this meal was average, couldn't complain if it had been in another Hotel but the food is part of the experience and if it's not good maybe the pricing should reflect this. I would consider staying again as it's relaxing but maybe look to eat out more in the town.

We booked a two night spa break as a birthday getaway for myself and my daughter. Check in was nice and friendly and we were allocated a room straight away on the second floor. The bedroom was nice but the smell in the corridors to the room was horrendous. It reminded me of the smell you get in a nursing home or hospital and it certainly didn't help that a lot of cleaning products were used to try and disguise this awful smell. The room was very warm and there was no air conditioning to regulate the heat. The only option to let some air in was a double window/door with no screen and on the first night a big black cat made his way into the bedroom! The bed was very soft and the remote control for the television did not work.
As part of our stay dinner was included in the package which in total cost 450 euro. The dinner was the worst dinner I have ever been served. We ordered the soup for starter which was like custard it was that thick. It was very salty and didn't have any taste. We then had the cod and pork. The cod was inedible and the pork was over cooked. It was served with wilted vegetables covered in butter and a deep fried croquette. We asked for potatoes as neither of us eats croquettes and we were served waxy vacuum packed potatoes also covered in butter. These too were inedible. We ate in the bar the following night and it wasn't much better. The service was just awful. The only good thing about the two days was the spa. The receptionist there was so professional and welcoming and the therapists were just great. The flip flops they provide in the spa are the only thing we could complain about.
I could go on with a few more things but overall we were just so disappointed with the two days.It was meant to be a nice relaxing birthday get away but it was just awful.
