“Well worth doing”

This is a super way to spend a day.The Greenway is a well marked safe and easy to cycle path with spectacular views. We had a wonderful day and I would love to think this concept could be used as a template by other Irish Counties to expose the beauty of the countryside to all.We have come across similar setups in France and Sweden and the Greenway is every bit as good as these. We used Clew Bay bike hire who have five offices on the route and provide a shuttle bus taking any worries about punctures tiredness etc.The Blue Bicycle Newport was a lovely stopping place for lunch

“cycling the great western greenway”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

Cycled the great western greenway with a group of women over the weekend. Stayed at Achill island hotel for 2 nights, We found the hotel very relaxed and accommodating with the most friendly welcoming staff throughout the hotel.
Hired bicycles from Greenway cycles and again staff could not have been more accommodating and patient, cycled to Westport. Bicycles were picked up and the entire group transported back to Achill following a well earned pint or 2 and great food in the Cobblers inn. Glorious day, stunning views and some of the best hospitality on offer anywhere in the world. I'll be back...

Cycled the Mulranny - Achill leg of the greenway last week and just loved the scenery, entire set up and friendliness of all involved with Clew Bay bike hire. Stunning scenery along the way, very easy ride, will complete the entire greenway next time. Shuttle service very efficient. Fabulous benefit to County Mayo and full praise to all involved in it's development & maintenance, I am spreading the good word everywhere, Well done MCC! Special mention to JP, Travis & lovely shuttle bus driver from Achill - Mulranny :)

“Tourist Treasure”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

We were based at the wonderful Mulranny Park Hotel and hired bikes from the rear of the hotel on 2 separate occasions - our first cycling for many years.
The first occasion saw us ride to Achill Sound and back - the Greenway is a well maintained and tarred surface and was flat for most of the way , skirting the sea for much of the time with wonderful views towards North Mayo. A small part of this trip is on the main road which can be a trifle unnerving for the inexperienced cyclist - a pity, but one assumes unavoidable.
The second occasion was heading from Mulranny to Newport and back , slightly longer and slightly more hilly but very manageable even for the over 70's!! Wonderful views across Clew Bay early on and then more inland across unspoilt farmland - the Greenway was again beautifully landscaped with a number of attractive little bridges across mountain streams. Both occasions were enhanced by meeting fellow cyclists and there was a real camaraderie . On this route dont miss Yvonne's Coffee Shop , an uplifting and welcome comfort stop.
All in all, the Greenway, which can of course also be walked, must rank as one of Ireland's , if not Europe's , tourist treasures - dont miss it!

What a treat to finally cycle this wonderful amenity. Hired a great bike for €15(Ghost Cypress) at back of lovely hotel in Mullaranny and headed West from there to Achill Sound (and back) on a glorious day. Stunning views, beautiful vegetation, both wild and planted. Great to see the "road part" being developed to avoid traffic difficulties. That's the great appeal - cycling on a well surfaced road without the discomfort of traffic, potholes noise and pollution. The only regret is that it doesn't go "all the way"!!? Onto Achill Island, I mean. That would be the icing on the cake. Congrats to all involved in development of Greenway and to all continuing to maintain it. Planning next trip to do different leg.
