I’m just back from a wonderful weekend in Westport. We stayed in an amazing hostel there– Abbeywood. Its about 3 minutes walk from the town centre but you feel like you are in the middle of the countryside as it is set in lovely mature gardens which separate it from the town. It’s a converted monastery and it still has a lot of the original features which add to its charm. It also has an eclectic mix of antique furniture so it doesn’t have the clinical feeling of hotels. You also get a great breakfast included in the price – homemade brown bread(yum), cereal, coffee/tea, juice. Susan, the girl who runs it is really friendly, helpful and relaxed. I have stayed in a lot of hostels in Ireland so this makes a refreshing change. The beds are really comfortable and the place is spotless too. Also if you are not into the whole dorm thing and want a bit of privacy, they offer 2/3/4 bed rooms. So if you are disillusioned with the Irish hostel scene or think you are too old for hostels(that was me!) THINK AGAIN.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- What do you look for in a place to stay? Do you find hotels too expensive? B&Bs too claustrophobic and hostels too communal? Abbeywood gives you the best of all three...A former monastery, still retaining many of its original features such as stained glass windows, polished wood floors and high ceilings. Its situation, set in off the road in its own grounds makes it hard to believe it's so close to the centre of town. Come see us! ... more less
