“Pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed 2 December 2013 via mobile

We spent two nights in the Hillgrove and were very pleasantly surprised with how trendy and funky the decor was. Loved the fab oversized chair, mad flowers, and stiletto shoe couches in the foyer. Room 806 looked out onto the cathedral across the road and beds were comfy. Nice bathroom with good bath. Swimming pool, outdoor jacuzzi etc were nice- bring flip flops or slippers and swimming hats as you're charged otherwise.
Food in the Knuttal restaurant was lovely, chicken tender curry starter was really nice, as was goats cheese bruschetta and garlic mushrooms, and sirloin steaks were really nice too. Lovely enjoyable stay, good breakfast with friendly staff, especially the chipper gentleman hosting breakfast that weekend! Well done.

I stayed here recently for a night with a group of 32 friends. We had a great night, the staff were lovely and couldn't do enough. The rooms are big and clean and the bathrooms are lovely and spacious and we were very well looked after. We had a very enjoyable evening meal and breakfast the next morning.
The one thing I have to say the whole group was talking about,as was mentioned by one of your previous reviewers, was all the extras we had to pay for.A few examples, to get ice up to your room €2.50,a bottle of wine brought to room €5 service charge, two rounds of sandwiches and a pot of tea to room €38, the pool had a no bare feet policy so another €2 for cloth bedroom slippers(not at all suitable for pool), an extra towel for your hair at pool , another €1.We did feel we had paid a decent price for our bed and board so to have pay for so many extras was a bit much.
Like I said, we had a great time but the thing most people left talking about were the extras instead of the lovely hotel so maybe this is something you could revise.

Room Tip: Beware of the extras!

Dear MauraMM

Thank you so much for your lovely comments about our hotel and the food you received during your visit. I am sorry that you found the extras you ordered expensive. I must point out that like many other hotels around the world if you ask for room service there is a charge for this facility as with the ice. The website also states clearly that due to health & safety and our insurers’ request patrons are asked to wear both hats and footwear. We advise them to bring their own but if not we do have to charge for the ones we have on site. Again it states clearly on the website that one towel is provided free of charge to patrons and that any additional towels are charged at €1 each.
We want to thank you for choosing the 4 Star Hillgrove Hotel and do hope that you come back to see us again.
Kind regards

My son and I stayed here for two nights. I paid for cupcakes, fruit, slippers and robes as an extra treat for when we arrived. The robes were grey and were so creased we didn't even wear them. and looked like they had been used to clean the floors.
The cupcakes were fairy cakes with a bit if icing on them and I paid €36 euro for these. the fruit bowl was an apple an orange and a couple of plums which cost us €10. A total rip off. The Hillgrove sent me an e-mail to ask for feedback which I gave but they did not even bother to reply to my complaints. The staff were great and very friendly and the food was a little expensive but nice. I don't advise anyone to pay for any extras.

Room Tip: Do not pay for extras. Ask for quiet room away fro noisy kids or kiss a nights sleep goodbye.

Dear Amazeballs
I am sorry that you did not receive the email I sent you which I have attached as I can assure you we take customer feedback very serioulsy and either myself or one of the management team investigate each matter brought to our attention. I want to apologise that you little extras were not up to our normal standards and as I said in my email I have spoken to both housekeeping and the chef about this. Perhaps you could check your spam folder as the email I sent may be in there. We would be delighted if you chose to come back to the hotel and if you do please contact me directly as I would like to arrange a complimentary room upgrade (subject to availability).

Subject: Hillgrove Hotel - Customer Feedback
Hi Jacqueline
Firstly I want to thank you for choosing the 4 Star Hillgrove Hotel leisure & Spa. I have read through your comments and would just like to acknowledge that we take on board all customer feedback as without this we cannot strive to improve.
Thank you for your lovely comments about the food and staff. I am sorry however that your special little extras were not up to our normal standards. I have spoken to both our housekeeping about the bathrobes and our chef about your cupcakes and fruit basket. I can assure you that this matter is being fully investigated as this is not how we want our customers to be treated.
Once again thank you for your feedback and we do hope that you will return to the hotel very soon.
Kind regards

I stayed at the Hillgrove with 3 others last week. We booked a package which was great value for a 4 star hotel.
We were given a warm welcome and were impressed by the standard of décor in the public areas of the hotel - very stylish and comfortable!
Our rooms was spacious and clean, as were the bathrooms.
On the first night we opted to eat in the bar as we were too tired to venture into the town! The food was fantastic - great range of choices, we went for Chicken Maryland and an Indian style Chicken Sandwich, both of which were really well presented, simple but delicious dishes. The waiters and bar staff were very friendly and efficient.
On the second night, we availed of the meal included in our package. As the main restaurant only opens on weekends during winter, we were given a separate, more limited menu from which to order in the bar. The menu read well, and we ordered a range of dishes.
Unfortunately some of them were mediocre, while the soup was positively unpleasant. The waiter had commented that the tomato soup wasn't 'to everyone's taste', but one of our party decided to try it and we all had a taste: the consensus was that the soup wouldn't be to anyone's taste! The overpowering flavour was of beef, while the consistency was very watery.
My Caesar salad, while tasty, was not a Caesar salad, given that it lacked Cos lettuce and contained sundried tomatoes.
The bread that we ordered to accompany the meal was disappointing - very ordinary and I doubt it was baked in the hotel.
The main courses, a duck dish, a cheese and chutney filo tart, and the chicken Maryland, were all pleasant, as were the side dishes that accompanied them.
The desserts were less successful: a fairly flavourless apple crumble and a tasteless and soggy-bottomed Bailey's cheesecake.
Again, the presentation of all dishes was lovely, as were the menu descriptions, but many dishes were let down by the flavours. We mentioned our issues with the meal to our waiter, who was very helpful and assured us he would inform the chef of our comments.
To clarify, only the soup could be described as inedible: the other dishes were just disappointing.
We all agreed that had there been the option to pay a supplement to order from the bar menu rather than from the package menu, we would have been delighted to pay extra for a better standard of food. There really was no comparison between the two evening meals we tried: it was hard to believe they came from the same kitchen!
On our last morning, 2 of our party had massages and found them very enjoyable. We also used and enjoyed the leisure centre during our stay.
Breakfast was standard but pleasant; the staff were, again, very friendly and helpful.
Overall, I would be delighted to stay at the Hillgrove again, but would hesitate to avail of a package unless changes were made to the menu. This was the only downside of our stay.

Dear Wishyouwerehere
Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel and thank you also for the excellent comments about your food on the first night. I was disappointed to read your comments about the food on the second night, however, I realise that without knowing our downfalls we cannot strive to improve. I will certainly speak to the chef about the tomato soup and your desserts as we like to offer a quality value for money menu. We do hope that you do decide to come back to the hotel and if you do please contact me directly and I will arrange a complimentary room upgrade (subject to availability).

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights, the facilities are brilliant, staff are very friendly, nothing is too much trouble. The food was amazing, the steak was extremely tender, and cooked to perfection. I also had the duck the next night and it was also excellent. Local produce and a traditional taste of Ireland. I have stayed in 5star hotels before but the Hillgrove has something very special. Maybe its the atmosphere, or the staff, the food, spa facilities, I can't single anything out in particular but together it makes for a memorable relaxing stay. Everyone must experience a night away in the Hillgrove, absolutely 1st class, magnificant and friendly. As Arnie would say "I'll be back".

Room Tip: Room 804 has a 4 poster bed, very nice!! a coupe of rooms have a balcony which overlooks the main ro...

I stayed here for the October mid term with my husband and two kids. On arriving we were amazed by the fantastic decor both outside and in. We were received with a very warm welcome by staff. Our room was to the highest standard(trust me I am very fussy). Kids club details were displayed and detail of hour to hour activity shown. My two boys loved such a variety of activites to suit all ages. My kids would not usually stay on their own but were made so comfortable and involved were happy to. To my amazement in the bar and lobby area there is a kiddie camera where you can see the four rooms where the kids play. It is the best thing ever. I would have been up and down 40 times to check that they were ok. All I had to do was look at he camera and see how much fun they were having. This idea is genius. My husband and I relaxed wine and dine while we had full view of our kids having the time of their lives. For kids they had two play rooms, games room and playground all to high standard. Leisure they had outdoor hot tub, steam room and sauna, Jacuzzi, beauty salon and hair salon. Everything under one roof.
I can not speak so highly of this hotel we travelled all the ways from Cork but well worth the journey. We go away on breaks alot with the kids during the year and in all my years have never been so impressed by a hotel and staff. The kids have me well warned our next break that they are going nowhere else but the Hillgrove Hotel.
Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful experince.

Room Tip: we were in a room overlooking the beautiful cathedral. I know there is lovely views of the country s...
