“Excellent stay at the Westenra Arms, Monaghan”
Reviewed 13 April 2011

I stayed two nights while attending a nearby wedding. The Westenra is about the biggest enterprise in Monaghan and at the centre of local culture. There's a special feel to the place.
The staff, from desk to dining to cleaning, were all friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, kind and competent. Plenty of breakfast and a newspaper are included, as is free WiFi. Car parking was very convenient. The pub is the nicest one in town and so is busy but pleasant. Live music is a feature.
My room (207) was clean and quiet, situated toward the rear. The bathroom was immaculate and the shower was strong and hot. 207 might be deemed on the small side by some but, as I was travelling alone, more than adequate for my needs. The single rate of €60 was more than fair.
The Westenra Arms is a real slice of Irish life. I'd happily return.

I stayed in the Westenra on the recommendation of a friend on New Years Eve. Due to the fact it was New Years Eve I paid what I consided a lot for a very small room/bed - 130 Euro for the night. It is an old hotel and all the rooms along our corridor appeared to be very small. The room we had was at the front of the hotel and therefore facing directly on to the Diamond which seems to be where everyone exiting the surrounding nightclubs gather. The noise from 1.30 am unitl 4.00am was unbearable. I am very aware it was a night of celebration but the rooms at the front of the hotel are not the place to be if you require a nights sleep. On a more positive note the staff were extremely friendly and the hotel has great charachter to it.

We fondly re-call our few days spent in the West last August. The level of customer service was almost overwhelming and will never be forgotten. The smiles, personal care, the flexibility, the no problem can do attitude displayed by every member of staff from Rosie and Veronica on Reception to Pauline and all the night porters was a delight. The Mc Eneaney's are v lucky to have that kind of 'systematic' professionalism and warmth permeate their premises.

On top of the excellent staff the room (bridal suite) was fantastic and the food in the restaurant is always top notch - esp the presentation.

We will always treasure our time and our wedding preparations and celebrations that took place in the West - you guys played an unplanned but massive part in ensuring all went more than ok.

All our family and guests that stayed in the Westenra echoed the above sentiments.

Continued success to all in the Westenra.

We stayed at this hotel during the Harvest Time Blues Festival. It was extremely busy but the staff were very friendly and helpful. The late breakfast on Monday morning was much appreciated!
The location was perfect for all the events and close to the shops too!
We also stayed at this hotel two years ago for a wedding and everyone was very happy with their stay then too.

Rooms very good quality, clean, reasonnably roomy. The lady attending at the breaskfast room was not very helpful, but the other staff was (room maid, reception person, barman). The big highlight is the pub: terrific. It is designed as a cathedral interior, with gothic style for everything. And, surprisingly, it is so go quality that it is not tacky, it is done with good taste. Very pleasant to spend time there. The barman during the day (only time I went) was very kind and attentive. They serve at least lunch. I will visit again for sure.

On Friday 23 April 2010 we were the first couple ever to be married in the hotel and I cannot praise the hotel staff and facilities enough from the moment we first enquired if they could accommodate us to the moment we checked out.

We were married in the Town Hall Suite which is a grand room in itself and when layed out for the civil service looked even grander with its impressive mural at the back of the room. The room has it's own bar and toilets so is fully self containted. We had 54 to the service and meal and an extra 30 to the evening reception and there was plenty of room for everyone. The extra touches throughout the day were noted by guests and the food was a major talking point as it was so good. We had the large Diamond Suite which is a prefect room for a bride to get ready in due to the space and light for having make up done.

As mentioned the house keeping staff, waiting on staff, bar staff and management staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough for you, nothing was too much for them, the lengths went to for some things that we wanted for our wedding was amazing.

I could go on and write an essay on how fantastic our day was but if there is anything you want to know just ask me and I will be happy to answer if I can.

I want to say a personal thanks to Frank and a VERY special thanks to Rosie - we couldn't have done it without her and she deserves a medal for what she did for us throughout and we cannot thank her enough.

Just a quick review, as i am in work. and still recovering from hen one week later. But my stay in westenra hotel was that good i could nearly do it all over again! we went down on my hen party, a group of twelve girls and we got treated so well by all staff!
not to many guest liked us that much lol...
we arrived got checked in easily, greeted by a lovely member of staff who sorted out payment very easily. we then went out on a small pub crawl! one pub which was the squealing pig, which we got free shots just for being a hen! then back to hotel for quick change and out again!this time down stairs for evening meal! we were shown to our seats by a very friendly member of staff, when i sat down i was delighted that my menus had been personalised(nice touch) we then order our meal and it was delicious, especially the garlic potatoes which everybody raved about! i was then given a free bottle of champagne!(yet another nice touch!) the staff were great and always had time to speak!
would highly recommend the westenra for hens/stags groups of friends! not really for families as there is a disco above and a nightclub below which were both great! i had memorised the head waitors name but the drink must have killed of my brain cells! definately go back!

  • Liked — friendly staff
  • Disliked — rooms very warm, waking up with hangover !
