“A perfect place to stay when trekking in Co Sligo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2014

We were delighted to have discovered Ardtarmon House during our search for places to stay in Co Sligo. We wanted somewhere idyllic and close to the trekking spots, most notably Benbulbin (Binn Ghulbain). We were given a huge room with a view to a lovely driveway and the garden. For breakfast, Christa, the owner's very gracious wife makes her own Irish soda breads and jams. Both the marmalade and gooseberry jams were absolutely lovely. The place is very spacious with a nice lawn, woodland garden and access to a beach overlooking Sligo bay. Charles, Christa's husband and owner of the estate was so friendly and engaging. He delighted us about the history of the estate as well us giving us useful tips on where to go for a spot of walking. Apart from the main house, there are also self catering cottages, the best of which us the thatched cottage. Yes the place needs a luck if paint here and there but we loved its rustic charm and will definitely stay with them again.

My best B&B experience of the 3 weeks holiday- it was truly outstanding. Christa's directions were easy to follow , well worth the distance & (an essential bonus) the dog could stay with me in a courtyard cottage which was extremely well equipped. When ringing ahead, you never know what you are going to find- this place was sheer delight from the first welcoming moment. Stayed 3 days & still a wrench to leave. Charles & Christa were the most lovely hosts, friendly, helpful, very kind & so charming. There's a beautiful walk through their wood, then down along grassy mown paths, dog-legging to the beach- perfect for first thing before breakfast & last walk at night. Breakfast was served in the huge dining room at one big table with all the other guests- some delightful conversations with interesting folk- food was excellent too. Another bonus was the music festival at nearby Rosses Point from Friday to Sunday- the real Irish experience- locals enjoying themselves, acoustic & not aimed at the tourists, dancing too, the real Irish leg & foot work! Lots of archaeology in the area, lovely beaches, Sligo museums are interesting &, of course, there's also the Yeats connection. Can't recommend highly enough- very, very special.

Ok - I am going to get the first order of business out of the way! This place isn't very easy to find and you might go mad trying to find it. When I entered Ardtarmon House into my GPS it took us maybe a few kilometres away and if you want a reference point and a quick mud map here it is. If you are coming from Carney follow the main road in which i think is Urlah, you will see a Rectory on the right hand side - go past that a bit further until you see a shop and a pub "jordans" on the left hand side and turn left there…. keep going until you pass the cemetery on the right and then a school on the left and its a bit further up… So you might be wandering why I am going to lengths to get you there - well I just want you to experience this rustic Manor House. Charles and Christa are simply delightful and their manor whilst a little rundown is an absolute delight. We stayed in the main house for the first night, but asked to move into one of the cottages as my mum couldn't safely get in and out of the bath. The cottages are comfortable and clean and have everything you need, even a very friendly black Labrador. The Gardens are beautiful and we just loved wandering around with Kelly the dog walking us everywhere (and then coming in for a sleep in our lounge room at night. Please take the time to consider this option for accommodation we absolutely loved it.

Stayed in the Thatched Cottage which it would appear is the best of the self-catering accommodation.A spacious cottage attached to the main house, there were two separate living rooms and a large kitchen, which made it very accommodating for meals. It was very warm and cosy even in mid-February thanks to the open fire, central heating and oil-flled radiators all included in the price! Our hosts, Charles and Christa are the nicest hosts you could hope to meet and the location is perfect if you are interested in Yeats and scenery as it is near Drumcliffe and Ben Bulban. Would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: The Thatched cottage is the nicest - perfect for families with small children

My wife and I left our children with her parents in Donegal and had a few days in Sligo at various contrasting places. Ardtarmon House was exactly what we wanted when we had identified a grand Irish country house with some real family history. We first saw the house from across the bay as I rang Charles for directions. We made it without any problem and had a lovely afternoon and evening walking down to the beach and along to the little harbour. We ate at the fish restaurant up the road which was fine, though the chat in the bar between the locals and some flash folk up from Cork was the best bit.The next morning we had another trip down to the harbour and then breakfast in an environment which was wonderfully old world. It was not the hip of the Ice House or the extravagance of Harvey's Point, but a memorable and thoroughly authentic experience.

After visiting Sligo and Yeats country, we easily found our way to Ardtarmon House, simply using the directions provided with the confirmation of the booking. The scenic narrow roads are simply part of the getting there experience. The house is reached from the main road after a long drive through a thick and green vegetation. Christa welcomed us cordially and over a cup of excellent tea, explained us a few walks to and along the seashore. The house is full of history and so was our room, the large window on the driveway was simply magic, the silence in the park makes this the perfect place to read or maybe even write a book or just simply to relax.
Breakfast in the morning was rich, organic and tasty, and we were lucky enough to taste an oustanding orange marmelade that Charles and Christa prepare themselves.
The beauty of the location and the friendliness of our hosts made this a memorable beginning of a wonderful extended week-end in Ireland.

From the website I thought I had found the best place to end our short tour of Ireland. While we had no major complaints, and Christa is a lovely lady, it lacks some of the basic requirements of modern B&Bs.
1. Adequate signposting. If I were not a good navigator, we would never have found it. Christa explained that they only have the one small sign at their gate because they didn't like strangers coming in to have a look, which I found an extremely odd attitude to running a business like this.
2. The photos on the website make it look far nicer than it actually is, which is shabby, both inside and out. It needs some modernisation and cleaning.
3. Our bathroom had no shower; just a hand-held thing you shove on the taps - not good enough. The water is so soft (a good thing!) that the bath remains slippery even when all soap is rinsed off. We therefore found it extremely difficult to get out of, as there are no grab handles. When I mentioned this to Christa she said they had them but just hadn't installed them. I urged her to do that soon, before someone fell and sued them.
4. Because of its remoteness, we had booked dinner. The starter salad was divine, but the main course was dreadful: slices of overcooked beef, overcooked plain vegetables, and plain gravy. The dessert was so-so: fruit salad; the cream with it made it a bit more palatable. For 30 euros I expected something better.
I love the Sligo area, but will not stay here again.
