This hotel was a surprise. It is a big hotel . Our room was very comfortable . The staff most helpful and friendly. We had dinner in Finnigans bar and the food was very good. Brian, was friendly and gave excellent service. Wifi only in the public areas, good parking on site.

Stayed for 4 nights. Comfortable hotel with traditional decor. Our room was clean and comfortable. Drawback was that our room was not accessible without taking a half flight of stairs, either up from the lift on one floor or down from the floor above, as we were in the extended part of the hotel. Worth bearing in mind when booking if you have mobility problems. Breakfast was not included in our room deal and there was only one price option - reasonable at ten euro if you want a cooked breakfast but a little expensive if you want only toast and coffee. We opted to take a five minute walk to a nearby coffee and bagel house each morning instead.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have access without stairs.

Dear Karen H,

Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback, and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us. We do have a small number of rooms that are accessed only by stairs as we were originally built in 1928 and endeavour to keep the old world feel of the hotel, yet with modern conveniences.

We do have a number of floors that are accessed by a lift and these can be requested on booking

Visiting Sligo is always a pleasure and travelling by train from Dublin the Southern Hotel is always first choice. This time we brought our eldest grandchild with us and the room we had was splendid. Room 304. Plenty of room to spread ourselves, and even a jacuzzi bath to relax in after trotting around Sligo town.

Hotel is in a nice location. That is the only positive thing. When you enter hotel, they have downstairs all modern around reception area. When you open bedroom door its so old and outdated. Rooms are very basic. This is not a three star hotel!! Reception staff not friendly and not professional. Imagine saying to a guest "Stand there until we put through your card". Very rude indeed. Of all hotels we have stayed in this is the worst hotel. Facilities need updating and reception staff need proper training. Will never return to this hotel.

Dear Lisa L,

Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback, we are disappointed that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. Our hotel was built in 1928 and our rooms are decorated in keeping with the old world feel, I will raise the issue of reception at our next management meeting, we have had new reception staff join our team and they are currently being trained.

Thank you once again for your feedback

On approach to hotel I was dismayed to see 2 sets of steps which had to be mounted with luggage on tow before we could reach reception. The hotel is ideally situated, just a nice walkin distance from city centre. The bed rooms were very basic and very dated, but otherwise clean and fresh. I found the reception staff polite but not overly helpful or pleasant when we had to bring down remote control for tv as it wasn't working.Breakfast was just ok and we didn't dine in hotel restaurant.
