Open from Easter to October, Carrowmore offers a great insight to the lives of the Neolithic people who lived in the area, 5500 years ago. There is a visitor reception area, interpretive centre and toilets.
Free parking and a small admission fee. The visitor then has the choice of a guided tour in English which takes about an hour with an experienced guide. If you wish to go on your own a self-guided leaflet can be 'hired' for 3 Euro's and it is provided in 18 different languages. There are approximately 28 monuments, some on private land and in varying degrees of preservation. Some look as if they were only just built, others are a few stones lying scattered around.
This is a great way to see some of the really impressive Sligo landscape.

We took the guided tour at Carrowmore and found the guide very informative. There is walking over some hilly terrain but it is not strenuous.

One must definitely be a "stones" enthusiast to appreciate this attraction. It is vast and complex. The kids might enjoy the space to run around, but unless you are really into it as my husband and I are, I can see how one might bet bored.

This megalithic cemetery is the largest in Ireland and amongst the oldest in Europe. Built more than 5000 years ago, the guided tours, included with the price of admission (3 Euro) bring you back into the shadows of the past. Our guide, Linda, was extraordinarily great. There were originally over 80 monuments on this site including chamber tombs, ring forts, cairns and passage graves. There are about 30 sites still worth visiting.

I don't know about you, but 8 Euro for a family to see no more than a pile of rocks, seemed a bit much.
