“Bird Watch Ireland Family Walk”
Review of Hazelwood

Reviewed 20 June 2013

Plenty of Signage and large carpark. Forest is beautiful with plenty of sights and wildlife.

We were lucky that there was a Family Walk on the Sunday we were in the area. Great turnout and walk proved excellent. Well done.

It's a nature walk that is perfect for anyone, very accessible, nice views throughout and thanks to the canopy of the trees, you can do it in the lashing rain.

As we live in Sligo we visit Hazelwood regularly, it's a lovely spot. The kids love feeding the ducks and swans (although the swans tend to be a bit "in your face"). The walk around Hazelwood is lovely. Whatever time of the year we visit the landscape always looks different.

Hazel wood is a lovely forest just outside Sligo town, It has trails and lakes and would be great for picnics and jogging or just walking the dog.

"I WENT out to the hazel wood / Because a fire was in my head," - so said Yeats in 1899 in "Song of the Wandering Aengus" and it remains an excellent place to take a calming walk and clear your head. There are not so many of the old sculpture left now but those you can find are interesting and worth the look. The giant mushroom sculptures at the far reaches of the path are a favourite of mine.
Often Half-moon bay beside the car park is filled with ducks and swans so bringing a camera can be worthwhile.
