Though technically a mountain, it's a hill walk really, but the views are really spectacular. It's very suitable for children as it's a great spot to introduce them to hill walking. Bring a reasonable camera and binoculars and on a reasonably clear day you can see you can see at least six counties. If you are very lucky you might see an eagle.

I live close to Knocknarea and have climbed to the top several times. The view from the top is stunning and is well worth a visit. Park in the car park off the Glen road and take the pathway to the top.

“Wonderful history and views if you are willing to make the climb”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

From much of the Sligo area you can see the pile of stones on the distant mountain that is Knocknarea. It has a type of calling and if you get the chance on a fine day you should answer that call and make the journey.

Your car can bring you to a small car park on the side of the mountain and a small sign says that you have 1.2KM to the summit. Not too bad you may think and for the first 800 meters it is fine. The path may be uneven at times but is very manageable for even those in not so wonderful physical condition. Thereafter the path becomes much steeper, more uneven and physically challenging. Take your time on the way up and also on the way down and it should be manageable for most.

When you get to the top - and even on the way - take the time to savour the views. On top you will see the 4,000 your old Cairn that is reputed to contain the remains of Queen Maeve. Travel around the Cairn and make the most of the views of the surrounding countryside.

Well worth the effort.

“Beautiful Country”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

As others have stated the climb is tough and if not in shape it could be a challenge. My husband and I made it about 3/4 of the way up, found a grassy knoll and sat and enjoyed the beautiful view. Even though we did not make it to the top it was a wonderful afternoon.
