“Many plus points a few minus points”
Reviewed 2 August 2011

This is my fourth time in this hotel. Noise and heat are the main down sides. The rooms at the front of the hotel suffers from traffic noise and the rear rooms from noisy extraction / aircon fans. The bathroom extractors are easily heard from other rooms, not a recipe for a good nights sleep if you are used to silence.
The staff are professional some friendly some cold and quite aloof although they all execute their tasks well.
The rooms are very warm, but the noise means keeping the windows open is not possible for a light sleeper like myself. For some bizarre reason the heating was on in the corridoor this week (1 Aug) I reported it to the reception and was given some
cock and bull about it getting cold in them at night, in Aug when it is 20 deg!
We ate here on our first visit and was very disappointed so since have stuck to the excellent (if a little pricey) selection of eateries in Waterford. (L'atmosphere is great but need to book)
Head for breakfast at the wrong time and you will be fighting with the many coach tours that use the hotel, not a major problem but can extend breakfast a little too much. Free parking opposite the hotel requires an endorsement of the ticket by reception, this is only valid after 5pm - 11 AM though, arrive a few mins earlier or later and you get charged.
If you do not like complete silence and are happy to have tropical temperatures in the room it would be a great hotel with free internet, free parking and roomy well equipped rooms.

Many thanks for taking the time to write your review and we appreciate your kind comments regarding the Hotel. We do hope you continue to stay at The Granville and that you see we are trying to right some of the minus points you have made us aware of. The heat problem has been resolved and you’re so right it was “bizarre”. Perhaps the next time you stay you might give dining here another chance as we do get some great feed back on what we do. Also please make us aware on reserving your room that you wish to have the quietest room in the house and any other request you may have as we do wish to please.

The hotel was nice and most of the staff were friendly. The room we stayed in was too small for 4 beds!! and we were right next to the airconditioning fan outside which kept going on and off through the night. The room were so hot we could not sleep alot of people were complaining although there was no heating on. No facilities for children and they dont tell you that you have to PAY FOR THE CAR PARK during the day and it is free from 5pm till 11am next morning BUT if you want to move your car to go for a spin during this time you will have to pay to exit the carpark as they will only validate it in the morning for you so that was a big downfall when your stuck there with children. Service was slow when we booked in for an evening meal. Hotel is really only for older people who just want to go and relax or meet up with a few friends. Beds were comfortable that was the only good part.

Room Tip: make sure your room is not beside the air conditioning fan outside

Many thanks for taking the time to right your review and we appreciate your kind comments regarding the Hotel. We don’t have or advertise rooms that can take four beds. I am not aware of the circumstances as to why it was necessary to put a fourth bed in your room. It would not be our norm to do so. Unless it was requested to accommodate your family size in no more than one room. Parking again I can understand your comments however the parking facilities would have been explained to you both on booking and on check in. We do offer free overnight parking from 5pm to 11am next morning. Regarding the noise from the Air Con I am having all units checked at the moment. Once again many thanks for your comments.

We stayed for a 2 nights B&B package incl. Dinner mid July 2011. The hotel is situated right opposite the clock tower by the river, with the pedestrian area and the city centre just around the corner. Reception was very helpful and welcoming and most of the staff was pleasant and friendly. My only complaints would be those little annoying faults that you unfortunately can find in most hotels. In this case it was a loose fitting in the bedside lamp, the TV needs a new aerial cord and the bathroom door handle was nearly falling off with one screw just hanging in there.

But in general the Hotel seemed well run. The beds were comfortable. There was a feeling of generosity. The room was spacious. We had a nice dinner and plentiful breakfast. There was no extra charge for the safe and free parking between 5 pm and 11 am just across the road, and there was no charge for Wi-Fi. The water was hot and plentiful and the shower worked well.

All in all, a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view are onto mainroad. To sleep by open window ask for a room in the back.

Our room was the size of a walk-in closet. It would have been small but manageable for one person, but it was ridiculous to book two people into it. The bathroom was so small you couldn't use any of the utilities without climbing over the other ones. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the staff very friendly but they need to use common sense when booking two people into their tiny rooms. If you're going to stay there make sure you ask for one of their larger rooms. This was one of the few Uk hotels we stayed at that had free WiFi but only in the lobby.

We tried to keep our hotels to 100 Euros a night or less, and were pleasantly surprised to have way nicer accomodations that we expected. This is a grand-dame hotel. The room was large and comfortable, with little perks like a heated towel rack. The breakfast buffet was very elegant and was in addition to the meal you could also order (no extra charge). The woman on the front desk was amazingly warm and gracious. She went out of her way to help us with some non-hotel issues, and gave us some good information about what to see in this Viking town. Waterford is about way more than crystal. We wished we had more time to spend in the hotel and the town, and look forward to going back.

Well situated hotel on Merchants Quay, the Granville is a lovely historic hotel. The staff is exceptionally helpful, professional and polite. WiFi is available in the lobby and bar only but there is adequate seating. We had a good breakfast, although it took a while for my husband to have ismorder taken (I think they thought he wasmgoing formthe Continental breakfast as I had). Unfortunately, we had a room on the front and as some others have noted, sounded like someone had to replace every manhole cover on the street or a repeated door slamming - starting about 5:30 am. That said, I'd stay there again - if I could be assured of a room off the street.

We booked this as a stopover and sounded a great location.
We were allocated a room at the front - clean but very tired. When we commented at reception, we were told that most rooms had been refurbished - not ours though. This hotel was clearly a favourite with coaches - the manager was very attentive to them at breakfast - however didn't come to us - despite sending the milk back with a hair in it and the coffee pot that was filthy on the outside.
on the positive, we enjoyed the evening meal in the very atmospheric bar - excellent monk fish goujons.

All reviews are very helpfull and many thanks for taking the time to write your review. We take these comments very seriously and where possible investigate them. Your comments are similar to one of our internal comment cards which I feel you may also have filled out, which if so I again thank you. This possible being the case it helps me address your comments. Regarding your room ,you found it clean as one sould but tierd. Being a old building and one of the oldest hotels in the country you will appreciate we have a continious refurbishment program and any room we feel is tierd we do refurbish and perhaps yours is one we need to review . We have a great location and because of that we attract a mix of business which does include coaches. However it is our policy to be attentive to all our clients somehow we did not deliver this that morning. Not only do I apologise to you for that and I think I must take full responsibility for that as I feel it might have been me in the restaurant that morning. Regarding the hair and the dirty coffee pot that should just not have happened again I am sorry. Your comments will help to remind us all of what the customer can feel when we do not maintain our normal stantard and how aware we need to be that at all levels how the customer percives our actions. Glad you enjoyed your meal in the bar our fish special that day of fresh monk fish scampi was good. You also liked the atmosphere there and felt the service was also good. Perhaps you will get to revisit The Granville Hotel and give us the oppertunity to show we can be better. Again many thanks for your time.
