We ate here for the first time in about 5 years. The restaurant was busy as you would expect for a weekend. We hadn’t booked but were able to be accommodated as we went early in the evening. The restaurant is nicely appointed with cloth napkins laid out on all the tables. The restaurant is air conditioned which is a big plus on those rare days we have hot summer days.
The staff were very welcoming and service was very attentive throughout. We looked at the wine list and the waiter was happy to recommend and we eventually opted for the Montepulciano Black Label wine at €27.50 which was very good. For starters we had a trio of thinly sliced Bruschetta with various toppings two of which included parma ham and tomatoes. I tasted the bruschetta with tomatoes and it was good – I’ve had better but had a lot worse. I opted for the Mushroom Risotto – this was creamy with a strong flavour of mushrooms delicious and brought to a climax with a hint of truffle oil. An absolutely brilliant dish with the rice perfectly cooked. Full marks to the restaurant for offering Risotto (they have two options the other is with scallops) many Italians restaurants in Waterford don’t offer it because it is too difficult to get consistently right, no such problems here. Our guests opted for the steak (€3.50 supplement on Early Bird) I didn’t taste the sauce which they said was excellent but did taste the steak and it was very tasty. My only “Beef” about the steak is that too many restaurants serve what I consider thinly sliced steaks. The ones we had were a large size but at the expense of being thick. I believe a steak should be thick and if this means in our case a little smaller but thicker rather than large but thin I believe that is much better and does quality Irish meat justice. There were no issues with the meat quality but this is my personal opinion on thickness. My wife had the grilled cod with a tomato based sauce which tasted fine but she felt that it was steamed and not grilled as she normally enjoys the crispy skin which is a byproduct of being grilled. For desserts we opted for the tiramisu, bowl of ice cream and ice cream with espresso and liqueur poured over. The tiramisu was very good one of the better ones I have had and the other dishes got the thumbs up from our other guests.
Our party had mixed feelings on the Italian photographs being shown on the flat screen TV. Yes the photos were beautiful but the TV tended to cause our guests (myself included) to look at it at the expense of the company present.
The meal - 3 early birds two 3 course and one two course (2 with the €3.50 steak supplement), one three course meal a la carte with a bottle of wine and two cappuccinos came to €136.95 which we all felt was good value. In summary we will certainly be back I know that that I will be having the mushroom risotto probably for starter and main course…….
