“Quiet location with excellent food”

We were efficiently checked in and welcomed. The rooms were first class and very comfortable and clean. The room was a very good size with a beautiful bathroom. The restaurant was excellent with a good choice of meals and wines. A good choice for both business nad pleasure.

I was actually born in Ferrybank where the hotel is located, so I know the area well. I was actually born in Ferrybank where the hotel is located, so it feels a little strange to be writing a review about a hotel in my home place. This is a very pleasant well maintained hotel outside of the city. We received a warm welcome and found the service good. The hotel has recently been painted and has a fresh feel to it. The excellent restaurant has a very good value table d'hote menu of €25. The large glass dining area gives an old-world ambience which we liked especially.
Decor throughout is a bit mixed. Our bedroom was an excellent size and spotless but the furniture had a prefabricated IKEA feel to it. However given the reasonable price this was a small issue and more authentic antique furniture would doubtlessly increase the price considerably. Less acceptable were the matrasses which were distinctly average - not what one would expect nowadays in a hotel of this quality. The beds also come with blankets without a duvet option. Nonetheless we slept well as we were very tired after our journey. Overall, given the reasonable price of €80.00 for B&B for two people I have decided on an excellent rating in spite of some of the weaknesses.
The main issue in relation to the hotel comes down to location. For peace and quiet in a semi-rural location it is a very good choice. It is only suitable for a Waterford city stay if travelling by car as it is quite a distance to the city. If you are interested in a city centre location the Tower, Granville or Dooley’s are good choices in Waterford but do look up my review of the Tower for tips on room choice if considering staying there.

Room Tip: Better views of the river suir from second floor rooms but all are fine.

Overall we had a lovely stay at this hotel. It's quiet and calm and that's what we were looking for.

Pros: The meal was quite large and the bed was really comfortable. The breakfasts were great and all of the staff were really helpful and efficient.

Cons: The hotel was slightly too far out of town to walk into, The hotel though lovely was starting to look a bit worn and tired.

Myself and my missus took the opportunity for a night away somewhere close. We looked up reviews on line and it seemed quite good. It also helped that we got a deal on-line with dinner and bed & breakfast included . Found the hotel without too much difficulty, its only over the bridge about a two minute drive and to the right. The rooms were fairly basis but, the dinner in Zaks was excellent and the service great. The Oven Roast Chicken Ballotine was fantastic. We took a walk into Waterford afterwards, which is about twenty minutes away to work off the grub. It's a nice walk and the but the road is busy. Breakfast was again great with a good spread of cereals, fruit and yoghurt. To top that off there was also an option of cooked food, so we got both. My missus had the omelette which was lovely and I'd the pancakes. Lovely staff and worth a visit.

Room Tip: As for a view of the River and not the Car park

I selected this hotel just outside Waterford based on various reviews - I couldn't have made a better choice. Location is lovey, overlooking the estuary and the city. Slightly out of the centre but only a few mins drive. Large airy modern rooms with tasteful decor. But the best thing about the Athenaeum is the service. Stan, his daughter, wife and waiting staff were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble - even 12 for a dinner that started at 1130pm!! I wholeheartedly recommend the hotel and look forward to staying again.

Me and my partner stay nearby at a family holiday home near the Hook Lighthouse twice a year, but decided to leave our daughter with the family and spend a rare night away.

We booked a deal whereby dinner, bed and breakfast was included, and we upgraded our room to the four poster bed room, and was not dissapointed. The room was very spacious, the bed was comfortable, and the room boasts a beautiful view of the river Suir, and is totally peaceful.

The dinner was amazing. Usually the highlight of my trips to Wexford /Waterford is normally a night out at the Aldridge Lodge, whereby the food and service is very very good (worth checking out), but the dinner at Zaks was outstanding.

The service was second to none, and the waiter simply could not be more helpful, a true asset to the hotel. The wine we picked had just sold out and the waiter highly recommended a wine (which was not more expensive) and tasted lovely.

My partner had the goats cheese tart, and I had the lamb spring rolls, and we both had pork belly for our mains, and it was truly divine.

If I had to have one negative it would be the back ground music, we were both quite fed up of listening to David Gray playing by the end of our meal (but it definitely won't put me off visiting again).

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the River Suir
