Athenaeum House Hotel
Ranked #7 of 12 Hotels in Waterford
Reviewed 6 July 2013

This hotel did not live up to my expectations. The house itself is lovely and in a nice position in a residential area. Taxi to/from city a reasonable ~€8 each way. We stayed in room 315 which was the last room down the corridor facing the garden at the back of the hotel one floor up from reception so it was nice and quiet. The corridor smelt of a cleaning product - unpleasant and stuffy on a hot day. The walls in the room are grotty and could do with a good clean - the room hasn't had a deep clean in a long time. The skirting board was dirty with probably drips of tea or coffee near the table. The furniture in the rooms do not match the period features of the house. They are cheap veneered type and show a lot of wear and tear. Antique furniture (even with wear and tear) would make the rooms more in keeping with the house. The TV was tiny and hard to see from the bed which was only a few feet away and the remote control did not work. There were fingerprints on the bedside lamps. The double bed was two singles sagging into the middle. The bath has a shower curtain which with the window open on a hot day means it sticks to you while showering. Toiletries not the sort you want to put in your bag to bring home. Breakfast was OK with good choices however even at 9am on a Sunday morning all the buffet were pretty empty and not replaced (breads, yoghurts, fruit salad, etc.). I ordered pancakes and they were a very strange goo-ey and gluey texture in the middle - one expects either crepe or american style - they were just weird and inedible. My vegetarian husband ordered mushroom & cheese omelette but it arrived with ham which was remedied quickly. All staff we met were very pleasant & friendly. At €96 which included a 20% O2 Priority Discount for Manor Hotels I feel I did not get my money's worth and if I had found a nice B&B within/close to the city (I couldn't!) I would prefer to have spent my money on that.

Het hotel is situated outside the city on the banks of the bay. Having hardly any neighbourghs it means you can enjoy a nice evening on the terrace. You can even sleep with an open window.

Given the hotel accomodates a lot of bussiness meetings, the lobby, the bar, the lounge and the restaurant have been updated to provide all the service needed. Being tired of the trips, in addition to breakfast we had 2 times dinner at the hotel. At all occasions we had very good value for money. No Michelin stars, but surely no complains.

Most of the staff was "hotel friendly" but some were genuely friendly and so we felt very welcome.

We booked this hotel as a **** but in the rooms we saw the decline. The basic infrastructure was OK::spacious room, well equiped bathroom, lots of light and everything you can expect. But the towels were worn out and the sheets were ragged. And after 2 days a blown bulb was still not replaced. My main complain is the matrasses: they are reduced to nearly nothing and you can feel every spring benath it..

IMHO this can be a very good **** hotel if some basic investments are made

This hotel is in an older mansion type home. It has beautiful woodwork and has been maintained in good shape. Bathrooms are updated. Lovely dining room - fresh flowers. Can't comment about the food - we just had drinks - but we should have eaten there. Waterford itself had little to offer.

The hotel was well presented and very comfortable. We were surprised how good it was for a relatively low price. There is a good restaurant in the hotel for breakfast and dinner. Good parking and friendly staff.

This is a hotel that is well worth a visit. Use the restaurant. My trout starter was fabulous - the steak as good as I've eaten anywhere. The wine list had a 2008 white Riesling that was second to none. Whoever the chef, keep him or her! Great view from restaurant over the river. Rooms were superb - wifi is excellent. Staff are extremely friendly. Proprietor signed me in, was in the restaurant to ensure good service. Hard to find any fault. Great to be able to open the window in room and have plenty of fresh air - very rare nowadays in any hotel which are usually stuffy and too warm.

Room Tip: Ask for room looking out over river.

This hotel is situated in a lovely spot, with views from the patio across the river to Waterford. Unfortunately there is no bridge to Waterford from the hotel grounds, so it is a bit of a walk to the city centre. We stayed one night in the hotel; our room was very spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed our evening meal in the elegant restaurant in the hotel, and the breakfast was equally good (especially the range of local breads). Definitely a location to consider if you are after a quality hotel in Waterford.

Dear Simon F

Thank you for your very kind review. We actually make all our own breads on site, glad you enjoyed them. We agree a foot bridge across the river would be wonderful.

Glad that you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you back soon.

We all enjoyed this hotel, especially because of the size of the rooms and the readily available free wifi. The man who manages it gave us lots of suggestions about activities which we appreciated. The bathrooms are large and well appointed also. And the price was quite reasonable through Expedia. The only complaint is that it's a ways from town - about 40 minutes if you walk. It's right across the river from the Tower Hotel.
