“CLASSIC, ALREADY !”

I've had the opportunity to sample this hotel on more than six occasions , staying three and dining three. I could have sent this review earlier , so apologies!
It has a peaceful , serene location. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable, with nice amenities major asset , however is the hands-on involvement of the owners and their ability to hand pick their staff , all of which have a wonderful individual way about them , nothing is ever too much trouble.
Zak's is , without doubt the better dining option in the city.
The cooking is assured and accomplished (nice wine list too).
I can truly say on my six visits I've only had good meals and the restaurant has beautiful views , winter or summer.

Now I'm off to Paris for a few days , sampling Ducasse-Constant and Piege three great chefs , wish me luck!!!!!!!!

The location is great, very peaceful and overlooking the river. The room was good - clean and airy with tasteful decour (not my taste but still good!)

The food was excellent - with great wine list and fantastic cheese! Best meal in Ireland.

The only downside with this hotel is it's much further out of town than I thought when booking - hotels.com said 1Km which might have been true as the crow flies, but you have to go about 2-3K to reach town...

But the taxi's are cheap and they know where the hotel is - but like me can't pronounce it.

  • Liked — Friendly staff and the food
  • Disliked — Distance from town.

Positives:
Lovely place, mix of old and new. Nice decor and location by the river. Great staff, friendly and helpful.

Negatives:
Evening meal looked great on the plate, but was totally tasteless and cold...soup also cold and tasteless. desert was only so so. Recommended house wine was nothing special.
Bed was lumpy and hard.. pillows ditto...threadbare sheets..didn't sleep a wink !!. The bed was a major letdown.

I decided to book The Athenaeum House for a 2 night stay in May with my sister after reading reviews on Tripadvisor. I booked directly through the hotel website and got a very good rate that included breakfast and a meal on one night. The location is beautiful, we had a view over the river. The rooms are modern with large bathrooms, the decor throughout is very tasteful. The food was fabulous and the staff were very attentive. I would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Waterford either on business or for leisure as this is the best the City has to offer.

This was one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in. It certainly deserves its 4 stars. The staff were so friendly and helpful, the night manager made sure we had dinner waiting for us upon arrival as we didn't reach the hotel until late in the evening and were absolutely famished. The food was superb in the restaurant and the staff were efficient. However, it was quite pricey but i found this to be the case in some other restaurants in Waterford.
The room was small but really chic and modern. The bed was kingsize and we had a hi fi and flatscreen tv . I'd definitely recommend this to people looking for a romantic break at a very reasonable price.

I booked this based on generally positive reviews seen on this website, however was very dissappointed. Myself & my husband booked it as a weekend getaway. All was Ok up until dinner in the dining room. I had assumed a good standard of food and service based on the advertised reccommendations on the wall / internet so was looking forward to a good 4* meal. Starters were Ok, but the mains, in particular the steak my husband ordered was unrecognisable as such. It was supposed to be a T-bone. It was mainly fat and grizzle and in fact he couldn't eat most of it. It cost ~€28.00 so when the waiter asked if everything was OK with the meal we told him all was OK (not good) except the steak which was very poor. He merely said sorry and walked off. Needless to say we didn't order dessert or tea / coffee. When presenting us with the bill he again said sorry but offerred no replacement / discount explanation. There was a manager walking the floor but didn't come near us. We later came back to the bar and ordered a pint of bulmers -which came in a glass full of ice from the tap -i.e. 1/2 pint... charged at over €5. During our stay we heard several other guests complain to the manager and other staff regarding the food, poor housekeeping etc, with no satisfactory response. I'm wondering if there has been a change in management recently as it is certainly not up to 4* standards. The room was OK and the floor staff were trying - Managemetn seemed to have their head in the sand.

I stayed in the hotel for 3 nights in April. Lovely hotel, nice decor and clean. Had a very spacious room and bathroon. The breakfast menu had great varirty on it and was tasty. Evening meal was also tasty but possibly a little fancy. Location is fine if you have car or willing to taxi at night but in return it was quiet at night not being in city centre. only disappointing factor was it could do with some work outside i.e. landsacpe the gardens etc.
