“Needs a facelift”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2013 via mobile

Stayed here while on business in Waterford midweek. The staff are friendly and the lobby/bar area are nice, bright and modern. The rooms however are well worn and the whole place just gives the impression that it needs to be freshened up. The shower hanging off at an angle, worn carpet and skirting etc.

Thank you for your review,

I appreciate your kind comments regarding the lobby and bar area. We are currently completing the re-freshening of all of our rooms which is due to be completed very very soon. I am sorry to see you were allocated one of the very few rooms that have not yet been completed. I would appreciate the opportunity to right these wrongs should you wish to stay with us again. If so, please email me directly at gdawson@fitzwiltonhotel.ie

Thank you once again for your review.

We stayed in the Fitzwilton from a friday to the sunday...overall not a bad hotel - rooms quite nice (beds comfy) - hot water in bath/shower needs looking at. Good WiFi throughout hotel which was very handy. We ate in restaurant friday which was very nice (lovely risotto).

Bar was quite nice but guys there is a major problem with those gents urinals (they leak!).

Staff were very courteous and friendly - overall it was good but the big "must get" is air conditioning for the bedrooms...it must have been unbearable during the summer months.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the Bridge Street side of the Hotel under any circumstances...

Disappointing stay in this hotel, car park is underground & need to press intercom to enter, lady at reception said hello & we said we had a reservation under our name & she opened the barrier & hung up no thanks/see you at reception/nothing.
Arrived at reception & was greeted by 1 of the 2 receptionists, handed her my print out of my booking form which she declined to even read, she asked my surname, which is said & noted it was on the booking form & she proceeded to ask my first name which was also on booking form. 2nd receptionist had a walkie talkie & proceeded to shout into it to the porter regarding duties to be carried out. To be fair she could have walked into the back office.
We had our lunch before heading down to the shops & we ordered 2 sambos which the waitress did not write down in a pad & when sambos arrived, they were all mixed up. Did not complain as we were so hungry we could not wait for new ones to be brought out so we ate them. There was handmade chips on the side which i can only say would give anyone a heart attack, they were ringing in grease & no potatoes in them at all, they were all empty in the middle.
We had rang during the week to see was there a band in the bar & we were told there was & they had signs up in lobby & in the bar that day but no band arrived that ngt. We were informed by barman that they had music fri ngt instead.
Bedroom was fine, old fashioned but clean, on side street so was noisy with window open. Restaurant was spotless & nice & bright.
My husband said mens toilets in bar were disgusting & smelled foul. Ladies were average.
Disappointing stay & too many hotels in waterford so definetly wouldnt go back there again.

Room Tip: Try ask for a room away from side of road as can be very noisy if window is open

Outside traffic was very loud in room and also you could hear noise in the rooms next door to you. We had to move rooms due to a child that was screaming for over 2 hours an then the next room was not much better... I will not go into detail but the sounds we heard were stomach turning to say the least! So much for a romantic get away with my wife! Having said that the hotel staff were very nice and we did get in on a deal which was not too expensive. Central location, walking distance into city centre. Parking provided. My only complaint is the noise levels and I'm not one to be fussy but this was BAD!

Room Tip: Inquire first to see is there any quiet rooms away from the main roads that surround the hotel. Perh...

The Fitzwilton is straight ahead over the bridge as you drive into Waterford so is easy to find after a long journey. Staff are pleasant & work hard, although they do seem to struggle when large coach parties are in. Breakfast & bar food is good, although we chose not to eat in the restaurant. We really enjoyed the chowder and burgers the first night we arrived, but the chowder recipe had changed later in the week which was disappointing. Rooms are large and pleasant but we were woken each morning after 6 with what sounded like refuse lorries outside. On site parking is available. Would happily stay here again.

We stayed for two nights in September. The hotel was easy to find driving into town and although parking is limited we were able to get a space. Check in went easily. Our room fronted the side street and residents in the apt. across were up late with kids and open windows. Once our windows were closed, it was fine, although stuffy. Hotel provided fan upon request to circulate air and provide 'white noise' to block street sounds. Except for late night truck traffic on the side street, this worked okay.

There were several good restaurant choices within several blocks and reception made some good recommendations. We stopped at a recommended pub for week night music and found two really good restaurants for dinner. The closest street (O'Connell) into the historic and restaurant area is pretty deserted at night, with closed storefronts and several vacant buildings. There were a few people walking on the street, but no other activity.

The room was a good size and laid out well. Bathroom was clean with minor mildew in the shower. The bed was too hard for a side sleeper, but the hotel provided additional duvets to fold over and use as padding to the mattress top. With three folded duvets, the bed was comfortable. Pillows were flat and non-supportive as is typical of most European hotels. Wi-fi worked well in the room. The second night, a group of people came in late, laughing and talking loudly in the hallway. I had just gotten up to say something to them in the hall and when I opened the hall door, a hotel employee was already admonishing the group. It was quickly resolved.

Breakfast was good with a variety of cereal, fruit, limited pastries, scrambled eggs and juices. We did not eat dinner at the hotel. Decaf coffee was instant.

Stephen at reception did a fantastic job of providing directions and suggestions for dining and worked to help us locate an historic street. His suggestions were spot on for restaurants and a local pub. He answered all our local interest questions and provided additional towels and fan upon request. We were very pleased with Fitzwilton and would recommend it to others.

Room Tip: If you need an open window at night, don't get a room facing the side street.

2 night stay with evening meal - could not fault value for money
Decor very average but simple
Air con needs attention, all floors extremely hot and like an oven in the lift.
Stayed in a triple room with 2 others and only 2 sets of everything but it was any trouble to the staff when we asked for a third set of cups and saucers, shampoo, towels etc.
All staff were very obliging and nothing seemed to be a problem.
If I had a return visit to Waterford and need to stay in a hotel then YES I would stay there again.
