“A grand couple of hours”
Review of Fore Abbey

Reviewed 19 April 2014

Went to Fore today (Easter Saturday) with our two 5 year olds and they loved it, it was very quiet, we had the run of the place, a great place to spend a couple of hours, the kids loved it, and you can make up some great stories for the backdrop if the facts are lost on them.

This was a day out and when got there joined one of the groups taking a tour of this site.
Its fairly easy to get about as footpaths are laid.
Located just outside Castlepollard, Fore Abbey is easy to get too.

The quality of the location is what was the best part, I only expected to make a brief stop but ended up wishing I had brought some food to enjoy. There is a decent car park at the front, the well kept grounds included picnic tables and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy a sunny day. I saw plenty of children wandering around and climbing over the ruins and a constant stream of tour groups. Plenty of history and stories from the various information points but also the graveyard across the road from the car park. There are signs for a tourist office with cafe and public toilets but it was closed when I walked down and could not see any opening times. Its all free to explore and it made for a great afternoon's visit. Highly recommend.

Took my family for a picnic here yesterday to keep with the theme of our recent road trips around ancient ruins in the Meath area.

I would recommend this site to anyone interested in ancient monastic ruins.

There are 3 sites, an Abbey, a church and a cell. Unfortunately there is no access to the cell which seemed to be in almost perfect condition.

Some of the original cloisters remain but nothing compared to the beautiful Bective Abbey (20 miles away)

We easily spent over 2 hours investigating the ruins.

Fore is awesome- love the Abbey, love the Lake, love getting a lollipop in the Seven Wonders Bar, or a nice lunch in Hotel Castlepollard- love mullaghmeen forest and the Pilgrim's Trail--great tours organised in the area by Directing Tourism- www.directingtourism.ie.
