As a regular visitor to the south east, Brandon House is what I would consider in traveling terms to be 'my local'. The rooms are very well maintained, the familiar staff are always at hand to tend to my every need and food is constantly excellent. My favourite aspect of Brandon House however is the huge open plan lobby where guests can sit an read a newspaper, have a coffee or simply take in the hustle and bustle of guests checking in and out. I've never used the gym or spa's so cannot comment on them but certainly will when I no doubt return throughout the year.

My fiance and I recently attended a wedding at this hotel and stayed for three nights. The room was clean and very comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful, Yes there are stairs up to the front door but you can also drive up to it from the car park. The hotel has a very impressive drive up to it and has beautiful gardens to the front. Unfortunately, it was raining very heavily the morning of the wedding and we were provided with umbrellas by the hotel to bring with us. Breakfast had more than enough choice, there were even items such as omelettes and kippers which could be ordered at no extra cost aswell as the buffet. I did attend the Spa the morning after the wedding and found it to be very relaxing and professional. TIP they do clean early in the morning so if you don't want to be disturbed use the door sign! For all the fishermen out there, there is a fishing lake across the road from the hotel that it offers package days with (which My Fiance will be availing of soon). Got an invitation to another wedding there in Sept and can't wait to go!!

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms at front have better views

Spent the June Bank holiday celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary here. We had a wonderful and very relaxing time .The courtesy and helpfulness of the staff was excellant. A special mention of Lisa ,Jamie, Mairead and manager Greg who made our weekend that little bit more special. We look forward to going back again. Brian and Clare

Stayed here on a family break and really enjoyed it. I went for a mid week break and thought overall it was good value for money. The view from the reception and bar is really pleasant and overall found the staff to be courteous and friendly. The woman who served us breakfast in the mornings deserves a special mention.
The room was fine. (wish it had the views of the reception area). It also looks like a nice place for a wedding. Only had one bit of bar food and it was only ok but the evening meal deal looked good value. Locals also seemed to make an effort to pop up for a cuppa or an evening drink so that is a tip in itself.

This hotel must only have the rating it has because it has a Spa facility. We booked a Superior double room and it was nothing special. had to carry luggage up 2 flights of stairs and the room was 2 minutes walk from the reception. Room was clean and bed was quite large and comfortable. Bathroom was quite small and there was enough shampoo and conditioner to suit you if perhaps you were bald. Furniture (2 chairs and a small round table) was very basic. For such a beautiful and scenic area, we were treated to no view from the room windows, which only open 2 inches and were a fairly high risk Health & Safety violation. Arrived at reception at 1.45pm and were told that room was not ready as previous guests had not yet vacated the room !! Girl at reception was not very helpful (or Irish) but when we returned later at 5pm there was a HR girl on duty who was a little more pleasant in booking us in. Breakfast the following morning was good but a little slow. No self service for hot breakfast. Overall, we were most disappointed with our stay. Would not be happy with what we got for what we paid.

Only gripe is being double charged for food. Was sorted out but still not impressed with that.

Stayed in this hotel recently at a function. It's only ok. The room we were in was quite close to reception so everyone passed from the bar, going to bed etc. Also smokers outside the front door of the hotel (looks terrible btw) could be heard from our room. We had to have the window open as the room was so hot but had to close it when sleeping as it opened so wide, and we were on the bottom floor, anyone could have climbed in! Reception staff were pleasant, as were the waiting staff. Staff in function room bar so slow it was incredible. We didn't eat the breakfast a woke too late but friends told us it was ok. Thought the cost of room for night was v. Expensive for what u get. I have no problem paying for nice hotels, but thos isnt worth it. Also had suspicious itchy spots on us the following day, I can't definetivly blame the room as in fairness it seemed very clean but it's questionable. Hotel Only ok. V expensive for what u get.

Dear Mopsydopsy

As we continuously strive to improve the hotel, even through these difficult times, it's with distress that I read that you did not enjoy your stay to it's fullest, and felt that we were over rated. Most of our reputation rests on our food and genuine customer service, and I am delighted that you felt we did not let you down in that department.

However, that does not distract from your other points. Unfortunately we built a designated smoking area opposite the ballroom two years ago, but are battling to get our regular guests, especially when attending functions, to part with old habits, and hope that in time they will use the area provided, instead of the front of the hotel ( not to speak of us having to clean our flower beds everytime).

You were clearly allocated a room too close to the "hubbub" of things, and we do have very quiet rooms at the other end of the building. My sincerest apology.

As for the expense, it is very difficult for more traditional hotels to compete with new and modern hotels that were more recently built. We have a staggered refurbishment plan in place, and have already refurbished 14 family rooms. This is an ongoing process, and I do not hesistate to say that our cleanliness cannot be questioned.

When being compared to new hotels some might feel that we are missing "the modern extras". Hence you might feel we are too expensive, however we meet with all four star requirements as laid out. I hope your lasting memory will be of the wonderful team I have the honour of working with, and that the friendly faces all around will be the overriding memory of your stay. Thank you for taking the time to let us know where we can improve, and be assured that we will do our best. Regards Bettie-Marie
