“Not eager to return”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

Pro's:
- Wonderful location right on the beach.
- The new rooms in the sea spa wing are very spacious and comfortable.
- Lots of facilities inc. pools, spa, tennis and childrens play area.
- Extensive lunch and dinner menus with plenty of choice.
- Fabulous wine list.

Con's:
- Service levels have deteriorated - poor service at check in and checkout and from housekeeping staff.
- Menus and presentation of food quite dated and could do with some modernisation. E.g. Glass of orange juice still served on a plate. Options at breakfast quite limited - no waffles, pancakes or omlette options. Potatoes (in 2 of 3 forms!) served with every single dish on the lunch and dinner menu.
- Some dining room staff poorly trained, e.g. awful service from the cheese trolley, staff too familiar in many cases.
- Soft drinks in the mini bar were all out of date.
- Water jug and classes not removed when the room was serviced.
- Entertainment is very much targetted towards an older age group.

Dear Ms LollIreland,

Further to your letter on Trip Advisor, I and all our team were happy that you enjoyed the food, wines, and facilities of Kelly’s, but we were taken back and disappointed by your comment that you would not be eager to return.

It was our opening week in 2012, so we learnt a good lesson from your comments. We apologise that the service levels in accommodation and reception fell short of your expectations and ours. We appreciate your kind comments on the food and also your suggestions, our cheese board training is starting again today! I have shown your letter to our Executive Chef Eugene Callaghan and his team, who assure me that they will do the utmost to improve the quality of food we serve in hotel. In general, I would have to say that Eugene’s food has been very well received since his arrival in Beaches last year, however, we have to remain conscious of over modernization of the food or we could loose many of our existing supporters. We normally only have one potato on the plate if any, but offer a second option on the side. It is a pity you didn’t mention your preferences for breakfast at the time, we would certainly have accommodated your requests. Regarding the entertainment it does vary, we have a different group offering live music everynight of the week. It is unfortunately difficult to find "the one suits all" band.

Although disappointed, we thank you for taking the time to contact us on Trip Advisor and hopefully we will have the pleasure of your return at some future date.

Yours sincerely,

Bill Kelly,

1st time to Kelly's as an adult & first holiday with our 7mth old. Love how this place is set up, with space for the kids and retreats for the adults!! As a parent you really feel like you fit in - the room, baby preparation room and general set up was great. Brilliant playroom & lovely babysitter for evening so we could get away.
Package prices are high but great value for money & other costs (spa, drinks, etc) are not expensive. Spa is magnificent!!
We'll be back next year!!

Dear Caroghon,

Thank you so much for your very kind letter on Trip Advisor and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Kelly’s with your new family, congratulations! I was happy to hear you had some time in the Spa and got a babysitter for dinner time, it is important for young parents to get time out like that.

We really appreciate you taking time to post your comments, which I have posted on our staff notice board for all to see.

Look forward to seeing you in the near future.

Kind Regards,

Bill Kelly

Okay, so an oasis is supposed to be in the middle of the desert, not on the seashore, right? Well, Kellys has always been a bit unique among the hotels in Ireland, offering a more inclusive type package for the visitor - who must arrive resigned to his fate of departing a little larger in the waistline department.

Having stayed before in family "can I go to the pool now?" mode, the recent visit was just as a couple; on arrival, one notices the high child population much more as they are now regarded as threats to one's peace and tranquility - rather than friend fodder for one's own little horrors in times past. Fortunately, the hotel does offer some quiet corners and there are access restrictions to some areas in the eveningtime. Our room however did not offer the kind of space needed to retreat to in comfort to read.

Food is a major part of the Kelly's experience; we stayed full board which offers breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. One always hopes that the food will rise above the mass catering level that most hotels provide. Based on previous visits, there seemed a drop in the standards with simple things done in a lazy way. Some examples: the potato option on all four of our meals (lunch x 2, dinner x 2) was plain mash; salad leaves were the same uninspiring offerings at all meals - including a "Caesar" salad, without any romaine leaves at all; carrots featured on all four meals. On the plus side, we did enjoy some non-hotel type menu options such as venison, saddle of rabbit and brill, the cheese board was good and there was no faulting the reasonably priced house wine selection.
Breakfast was well above average - freshly squeezed orange juice, good coffee, nice kippers.

Staff in the hotel are unfailingly polite and work hard to keep their guests happy.
As stated at the outset, the package on offer in Kellys in unique - not cheap and perhaps couples travelling on their own might find a smaller more boutique type hotel more to their liking. For families (and we saw plenty of three generations size), they seem to love the place.

Dear Rostourist,

Further to your letter on Trip Advisor, I and all our team were happy that you enjoyed your stay and the service from our team. However, we were most upset that our bedroom and some of the food fell short of your expectations and ours.

I would appreciate if you would let me know which room you stayed in, as all our rooms differ and we have lots of rooms with space to read in comfort. I am guessing from your letter that you were here during the children’s midterm break period 10th to 19 February, it would be by far the highest child population of any week of the year, where we also organised the special outdoor dynamics activities for family enjoyment. It would certainly not reflect our normal business mix, I sincerely regret if you were not notified of this in advance.

We appreciate your kind comments on the food and also your suggestions. I have shown your letter to our Executive Chef Eugene Callaghan and his team, who assure me that they will do the utmost to improve the quality of food we serve in hotel. In general, I would have to say that Eugene’s food has been very well received since his arrival in Beaches last year, however, from your comments it was not the case on this occasion. The opening midweek may not give a fair reflection as we had a few new members in the kitchen brigade, but as the say “we are only as good as our last meal!”

Thank you for taking the time to contact us on Trip Advisor as we need every now and again to be kept on our toes and keep up the good name of Kelly’s Resort Hotel.

With good wishes.

Yours sincerely,

Bill Kelly,

Why don't I want to write this review? Because the hotel is so good I don't really want to spread the word! But I guess the secret is out and most of Ireland knows about the hotel.
This is an excellent family-run hotel where the staff are friendly and can't do enough for all guests. We visited in order to attend the Wexford Opera festival and they happily provided transport into Wexford and back after the opera. Dinners / meals were adjusted to take account of the opera performances and there were at least thirty guests who took advantage of this. We stayed on a full board opera package and were very happy with this. The beach location is fantastic and the views from our room overlooking the gardens and the beach was exceptional. The full board basis including afternoon tea and cake is generous and we did not partake of every meal, fully, as we would have had a serious problem with increased weight on the flight home!!!!!
The pool and spa facilities were excellent and are recomended. There is an interesting and extensive art collection throughout the hotel. The reception staff before during and after our stay were amongst the best we have encountered.

Room Tip: They say they don't allocate rooms in advance - but you will really need a sea view room

There is a reason why this place has been around forever! Lovely relaxed atmosphere, great food and fantastic staff. From the moment we arrived to check in the staff couldn't do enough for us, which really made our stay most enjoyable. It was our first time away with our 9 month old baby. There hotel has excellant facilities for children, from the newly refurbished family room we stayed in to the baby room with sterilizers, baby food etc, to the babbysitters and the kids club it was a very enjoyable relaxed family weekend. What makes this place is the staff, we will definately be back!

Our family (in several generations) have loved our stays here over many years. I personally enjoy the art, the multiplicity of hide-away rooms to sit and read, the lovely grounds and the location right on the beach; my son says the best part is not having to wear shoes and the activities organized for kids; my father enjoys the old-fashioned service and the superb dining room for dinner. It's professionally run by a family who've been also there for generations and don't settle for anything less than perfect customer service. Didn't use the spa but heard good things from other guests. Something for everyone on a family weekend.

We (family of 5 - 3 kids under 8) stayed as part of a relatives birthday celebrations for 2 nights and my only complaint is I wish it was for 2 weeks!!!

Starting at the bottom, the rooms aren't fantastic for the price you pay but they are clean and comfortable. We stayed in a ground floor family room.

Everything else about the hotel is perfection, the food is AMAZING, for adults & kids. Never short on choice.
The hotel is set up so that parents and kinds get a holiday. the kids can do loads of activities(golf, arts, baking, tv, pool, snooker, playstation, playground, beach, tennis disco etc) during the day and right up to about 9pm. We got a recommended babysitter who was excellent & not expensive for the evening time. My kids beg to go back all the time x

The pool is lovely & although I didnt go to the spa, some others did and all reports were good.
Cant wait to save up & go back
