To have a personal guided tour through Wexford Opera House was very special. Having been to most theatres in England in which operas are presented, including both the old and new Glyndebourne theatres, this is the first time we’ve had an opportunity to visit this splendid theatre which is the home to one of the world’s great opera festivals. The first thing one notices is just how well the building fits into the townscape. The main entrance is quite understated on a narrow town street and yet opens up into a series of excellent public spaces decorated with imaginative art works. The opera house auditorium itself is stupendous and, whilst being a traditional shape, is very modern in look with beautifully finished wood specially incorporated into the design to create the perfect acoustic. Friends who have sung here have attested to the excellence of the building for singing. The seats are comfortable and I understand that these have also been included in the acoustic equation. Working up through the building we eventually arrived at the splendid café with views over the town and the estuary - when the weather is better than it was when we went. Efficient service and good snacks in the café topped off a memorable visit. Would that we could afford to come over to Ireland when the festival is on! Recommended.
