Very special museum, was a real prison once, now restored to it' s original state. You learn the story of that era in great detail from life size mannequins who begin to speak as you enter each cell. There is also the imodel of the interior of a wooden ship of that time to show how convicts were transfered to Australia. The restaurant is also great.

I very much enjoyed this visit. It's very accessible, interactive, cheap and full of information. You find out what life was all about as prisoner and talks about all the various political prisoners that spent time in the cells. Upstairs they have created a set of a prison ship with all the background sounds that you would expect to hear. Well worth the visit.

Very interesting, very well laid out & interactive. The kids loved it. A deep sense of history and the lives of the inmates. Well worth visiting.

We visited on a chilly midwinter day so the gaol looked a very oppressive place, which it must have been. A lovely curator sold us our tickets and explained how to listen to the commentary and find our way round the gaol. A very informative commentary, exhibits on the walls and in the cells made you realise how awful being an inmate must have been. The journey to the 'new world' on a prison ship was, if anything, even more brutal.
Well worth a visit.

We visited several Goals during our visit to Ireland and this was by far the best. It brings history to life in a thought provoking and very emotional way. Make time for a visit to Wicklow to experience this. Follow it up with a meal at the cafe because this also can't be missed!
