“A nice comfortable country inn”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2013

We stayed for a night recently, after having passed by on the A1 numerous times. We really couldn't complain about anything. The bedroom was a decent size, and surprisingly quiet for a roadside location. The en-suite bathroom was on the small side, but as it's an old coaching inn, it seems logical that some things get a little squeezed. There was plenty of hot water, though, and the rooms were very clean.

The bar is cozy, and the restaurant is lovely. Two people manned both the bar and the restaurant, and they worked awfully hard to keep everyone happy. The dinner was tasty, and well prepared. Even better was the full-English breakfast the next morning. Cooked to order and with local ingredients, I highly recommend it.

This has the potential to be a great hotel/inn. The food was of a very good standard, the beer was very well kept and the staff friendly and engaging. However the restaurant was quite cold and draughty, had to move tables to be near electric fire as the radiators were not working.

The accommodation is where it goes pair shaped. The room I had was in what looked like a converted stable block. It is December and down to 3°C at night. The room was very cold and the central heating switches off overnight. There was an electric fire next to the bed, but the location of a few inches from the duvet and the danger of fire made me be not wish to switch it on.

Distinct lack of 13 amp sockets as well. Had to use the extension cable on the kettle to charge phone and iPad. Most sockets were the old 5 amp sockets which means some of the wiring must be pretty old and dangerous by now. Of course I might be wrong.

The bed was very short, made a lot of noise every time you moved and the pillows had no substance. So I now have a stiff neck!

There was surprisingly little noise despite being only yards from the main A1 road.

Room Tip: Back of the house to be away from the traffic noise.

Well that's how it appeared to us watching the person behind the bar serve drinks, answer queries, attend reception and attend the 'chef' to serve meals. Waiting patiently was the order of the day for customers. We were introduced to this regime on arrival. Having pressed the bell on reception 3 times, initially a polite jab, followed by a more meaningful stab, and finally a long long push. A unhurried chap arrived and without apology booked us in and took a dinner reservation. He did carry a bag for us to the room which was good, but we left another in reception which remained there until I collected it. Not a big deal, but he could not have failed to notice it on his return, and a nice touch would have been for him to deliver it to the room.
The dinner menu was not great and indeed the chef did make a prawn cocktail for my wife, who was struggling to find a gluten free starter. However, he followed that up with yesterday's deep fried belly pork! This piece of meat, about the size of a double thickness fish finger was clearly very overcooked and reheated. I'm always troubled when something like this happens as it must have been obvious to the 'chef' that this was a poor reflection on him. Is it a case of shove it out there and see what happens? Did he think it was acceptable? Did he care at all? Needless to say my wife didn't eat it, but being so hungry ate the potatoes and veg, rather than send it back. However, we refused to pay for it and were offered a sweet as compensation, which was refused as there were no acceptable gluten free sweets.
It wasn't a busy night and when I read the other reviews I must accept that our experience was not typical. Guests are encouraged to write a review, so why on earth when there is a clear problem like the belly pork doesn't the staff ( chef in this case ) address it. Get out there chef and explain why that hard piece of overcooked meat made it past your discerning eye.
Rooms were very good as was parking. Bar was a bit limited and service slow. Bar person a hero.

Another one night stop over and again I booked my stay on the back of reviews on TA.
This place is a gem - right by the A1. Despite its location is was surprisingly quiet. Check in was quick and none of this lets see your credit card stuff.
My room was vast - warm but not stuffy with a large bathroom. It was well furnished and everything was clean & tidy. Free wifi was on offer and it was pretty quick. I booked DB&B and the food was well cooked and tasty. It would have been rude not to try the bar - and the beer was good (if slightly pricy). The owner was in the bar and was friendly as were the other staff.
After a good nights sleep an excellent breakfast was served - freshly cooked! There was not much cold food on offer but with a full English available that was not a problem.
To sum up a well earned 5* stay.

We chose this venue as we felt it had a relaxed and friendly feel.... Nothing was too much trouble and we were allowed to decorate and do what we wanted with the wedding rooms.
The staff were lovely in particular the bar man everyone commented on what a great guy he was... Thank you!
The food served was lovely and we went for bacon and sausage bap's in the evening they went down really well!!!
Everything went to plan and the day was so special.
The family stayed the night before the wedding and the food in the restaurant was delicious..... Everyone was really impressed and left feeling full.... T-bone steak was beautiful according to my bridesmaids. I'm a vegi so would recommend the roasted vegetable linguini.
The rooms were home from home everything you needed, cozy and were warm!! And it was very chilli outside.... The Bridal suit was beautiful.... A lovely treat.
A massive thank you to everyone at the hotel for making our wedding day so special.....
(Even though it's right on the A1 you don't hear any traffic noise... Don't let that put you off!!!)
