“Home of the peasant poet”
Reviewed 8 April 2014

How fantastic that this little cottage, home to the peasant poet, John Clare, has been restored to the way it was when he lived here! and more than that the interpretation work that has been done, the garden by Chelsea Gold Award winner, Adam Frost and the tea room with the best light lunches for miles!

Very good, informative and historic. Well worth a visit, and a walk round the village at the same time

“Unexpected bonus to an already inspiring trip out”
Reviewed 7 March 2014

Arrived with visitors late in the afternoon, and very pleasant it all was. While's there's inevitably not much real John Clare memorabilia surviving, what there is well presented, and we almost imagined this tragic poet still being with us in odd moments as we stooped to enter the small rooms of his cottage. The cafe and bookshop are both managed by smiling, enthusiastic volunteers.
As an unexpected bonus, we discovered that there was to be a lecture on the life and work of Rudyard Kipling that night, so we paid a visit to the pub next door and wandered around the pleasant village for a couple of hours, and then it was back to the cottage. With a talk, music, a glass of wine and a good spread of food laid out for us afterwards, this was an inspirational way to spend an evening - not bad for £4!
One query - why is John Clare's gravestone in the churchyard in such a grubby condition??

Reviewed 12 December 2013

Lovely little thatched place, home of john clare, the peasant poet. Audio tours, etc, arts and crafts area, small lending library, education/ play area. Great cafe selling scones and soup, mince pies, cakes. Helpful staff, enthusiastic about this charity, innovative ideas including music nights and fayres, well attended, excellent place to meet up.
