“A unique piece of medieval Britain”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

This is one of the best preserved medieval manor tower in the country including wall paintings that disclose the intimate detail of the way of life and attitudes of the time.

“Unique Place”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

I thoroughly recommend a visit to Longthorpe Tower. It has been closed to the general public for many years and it was a cause of celebration in Peterborough when it re-opened last year. It is a unique place with unrivalled medieval wall paintings. There is usually someone on hand to explain and interpret these paintings which are absolutely wonderful. Re-enactment events are often held here.

“Hidden gem”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

It's a bit tricky to find and the car park isn't that close. Also I think it is only open on certain days - so check before you go. But do go. There are magnificent wall paintings in this small tower. Also if you can, ask to go out on the roof. Some nice views and an example of a very early chimney. Staff were in period dress when I was there. They were very helpful and knowledgeable and keen to show you what the paintings were all about.

“Attendance on a Special Event Day”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

Had it not have been for the special event this would have been a disappointing visit. As it was we visited during a "Dads Army" event. That in itself was worth the visit. It was great to hear from a couple of people who had clearly done all their background reading on how the LDF was equipped, how it worked locally during this time and background (hands on) to all the actual and improvised weapons were made and used.

The Tower itself is not an enormous monument. The downstairs contains a series of old paintings in various stages of completeness (caused by the LDF overpainting them during the war)......the upstairs is again a single room accessed by a tiny stairwell and with a couple of exhibition boards, and hands on exhibits. We had fun with those exhibits and the rule is to make the most of what is there.

Probably about an ghour will be required for this visit. Had it not been for the special event I would have graded this as 3 stars.

It does however stand within a most beautiful village setting with olde worlde houses etc. Just a few minutes outside Peterborough City Centre.
