Once a real treat within the garden centre for a nice meal, monring coffee or afternoon tea, over the last year or so the standard of service, tidiness and food quality has dropped dramatically, which undermines the attractive venue and large outdoor seating area.
Traditionally a place for a morning coffee/tea and scones or pastires or afternoon tea, I reckon the cheap and cheerful breakfast offer every day to pull in the crowds and the cheap lunches have spoilt the rest of the day. Staff are too busy clearing up the real mess left after the breakfast rush and mid afternoon too intent on cleaning the hot food area to bother with people seeking morning coffees or afternoon teas.
I regularly visit a couple of the shops in the retail park so pop into Cafe VH to have a look at what has improved or gone off. If you are looking for a sandwich mid afternoon forget it! A few dried up offerings, usually chicken tikka or grey looking egg sit in the cabinet. If you ask for a fresh one or something different the answer is always NO! Often there are very few scones and a few remnants of cakes and whether dried up or not they are always priced the same. Queues in the afternoon can get long as only one counter is open while the many staff around potter with cleaning. Speciality coffees keep the queues long and at any time of day and hot food is cold by the time you get to your seat.
We tried the £5 lunch this week to get something which tasted pleasant enough but was only warm and a bit dried up from sitting on the counter too long. What we had was the only food which looked edible, There was a breakfast grill choice but it was so dried up noone in their right mind would have bought it.The 'freshly cooked' chips were cold inside.
Over five visits in recent months we have taken the cups back as they were not properly washed and had remnants of egg yolk and sauces stuck to them. Cutlery is the same. The staff are OK about offering cleaner cups, however the problems seem now to be set in and so poor service, cleanliness, table clearing and food quality seems to be the normal for Cafe VH.
The standard now is a shame for the retail park. If I was visiting from some distance rather than a few miles, I reckon I would not return again. The garden centre and cafe is the main attraction in the retail park and so poor standards here will reflect badly. Local people seem to agree with me and wonder how long before the garden centre goes under. The frequent turnover of and empty shop units, with rumours the only busy store ( Hobbycraft) is bailing out to another retail park only add to fears the attraction will go under. The hotel planned is not built, nor has the promised supermarket arrived.
