“Victorian elegance, but could do with a bit of tlc.”
Reviewed 9 January 2014

The Majestic is a beautiful hotel-rooms are spacious and interior is reminiscent of the opulence we might associate with the Victorian ladies of Harrogate. The car park is a decent size, and well laid out. We stayed overnight, and a couple of days on a work related seminar. The staff that we encountered were pleasant enough, but not particularly helpful. Our room was big, and the linens were all clean, though there were a couple of minor glitches with the room prep. Breakfast was regular hotel fare- all quite tasty, but not noteworthy. The 'old school lemon curd' was really more the 'heavily set modern' variety. Buffet lunch was a good, fresh salad with generous meat platter and fish platter, along with a small choice of hot dishes, which my other half enjoyed on day two, but said was only luke warm on day one. Dinner was the table d' hote menu; good choices, and well cooked, though the fish cake starter was somewhat light on the fish, and the sauce on the fish main had a skin by the time it arrived. Vegetables were hot, and not cooked to death! The main criticism at meal times relates to the fact that we were in a fairly large party, and we're seated 12 to a table. This led to very 'cosy' meal times, with little manouvering room, and each table had just one set of condiments, butter dish and milk jug. On the whole, not an unpleasant stay, but probably not somewhere we'd choose to go back to based on this first experience.

Dear hadenmaiden,

Thank you for posting your review of the Majestic Hotel. I'm very pleased that we seem to have catered well for your needs during the conference you attended.

I take your point on the dining tables for your group which was as we were asked but better advised to opt for smaller as we are rarely short of space here !

I do hope you will return and would be happy to oversee your booking if you'll allow me.

Kind regards, Vince

The Majestic is an old Victorian style hotel, set in beautiful gardens and within walking distance to the centre of Harrogate. Parking is available but you have to pay extra but is well worth it.
We spent 2 nights there and really enjoyed it. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious with large bathroom and very clean. As we had a package deal which included breakfast and dinner we ate both evenings in the hotel and the food and service were excellent. The evening menu offered a large selection of dishes and our party were all satisfied with their choices. Breakfast was absolutely delicious and you couldn't wish for more choice. I especially enjoyed the wide selection of fresh fruit especially the mixed berries and yogurt. I would advise people arriving in the late afternoon who want an evening meal to book beforehand as if they are very busy you can only get a table later in the evening.
The only negative point in this hotel is the spa facilities. The swimming pool is small and the changing rooms didn't look so hygienic. The sauna is also in the changing rooms and didn't entice me to go in. The fitness room had lots of equipment but placed far to close together and if there are a lot of people working out it is not that pleasant when a stranger is sat right next to you.

The Majestic is a beautiful period hotel set in it's own grounds just a 5min walk from the centre of Harrogate.
When you go inside it's like being transported the beginning of the last century with wide walkways, grand staircase and spacious communal areas.
The standard of the food was excellent and staff friendly and attentive.
Some of the bedrooms are in need of refurbishment but some have actually been upgraded to a very acceptable standard.
Overall, a classy place to stay and fits in well with the 'Ambiance' of Harrogate.

This magnificent old hotel must really take some keeping up. Reception rooms are huge and the hotel vast, but staff are trying hard. There seem to be a lot of good deals around to try and encourage visitors and so it is likely to be good value.
The main reception rooms are beautiful and elegant and our bedroom was fairly large and had been updated. There were a few issues, though: light switch didn't work in the bedroom, or tv channels on arrival, but these were mainly sorted out pretty quickly. The room phone didn't seem to be working properly either. Our 'worksurface' had been badly treated and could do with replacement - a burn from curling tongues and a big pink stain, but furnishings good.
There is an enormous amount in this hotel to maintain and I think some of the cleaning needs more attention. I noticed a cobweb in the dining room and our bath (in rather a 'tired' bathroon) wasn't the cleanest, however, this may be being bit harsh.
Staff (seemingly few native English speakers) generally tried very hard and, especially considering the considerable number of people staying in the hotel, the food was of very good quality.
We had 2 evening meals and breakfasts. The latter had a good choice of foods, but, with large numbers of guests struggled a little in topping up hot elements at peak time - an issue for me was the barely cooked bacon, but otherwise a good job!
The hotel has a small, but warm pool and jacuzzi. A sauna is in each changing room, which is a bit anti-social if you are a couple. Brief view of gym, looked good, but overall, certainly pool area a little disappointing. However hotel is only 5 mins from Harrogate's beautiful Turkish Baths - and is on the edge of the large and interesting shopping centre.
Hotel is set in lovely grounds, although the weekend's weather meant we weren't able to enjoy them, but would be beautiful in the sunshine.
Overall a hotel to be recommended.

Lovely hotel, well kept and great service. Meal was excellent and bar prices were reasonable for a hotel. Spa facilities lacking for a 4 star hotel but this did not effect our visit. Would recommend hotel and will visit again in future.

Dear 6523lisa,

Thank you for posting your review of the Majestic Hotel. Its lovely to hear that you had a great time. We do only have a small health club but our separate Orchid Rooms Beauty Salon is perfect and a firm favourite.

Perhaps on your next visit, pop across the road to the restored and famous Turkish Baths which also get rave reviews.

Hoping to welcome you back later in the year.

Kind regards, Vince

Hotel is justa couple minutes walk into town. The room was excellent size, comfort & decor.Plently of choice at breakfast, and of you need extras some are available (such as cold meats & cheeses). One night we stayed was a Saturday which involved a party on the ground floor, but the noise went down before midnight, which was appreciated.Given the cold outside our room was very warm. Would use again & this is our second stay.

The Majestic is finally getting the investment it deserves and once completed I am sure this would get a five star review from me.

On the positive side:
- The hotel exudes Victorian elegance and some fo the public spaces are magnificent
- Central Harrogate is a very short (, 5 mins) wlk from the hotel so it is very well positioned
- Harrogate itself is a nice town
- Staff are welcoming and hospitable
- My bedroom was spacious
- Breakfast buffet was extensive

However, there are still rough edges:
- Equipment in the gym seems old and worn out
- Heating in the bedroom is very difficult to control
- My bedroom was in need of refurbishment, particularly the bathroom

Overall I had a good stay and would be happy to stay again.
