“Majestic in Harrogate”

Family birthday event, we had four Premium Rooms. Lovely hotel, clean and presentable, nice staff. Not cheap, you need to get a deal of some sort if possible, when it is quite reasonable.
Location in the town is very good. Breakfast was a lovely experience - we were a party of 10, and they found us a nice table together both mornings. Everything was good; food, service, atmosphere. Used the pool etc, all very nice. Our room(264) was fabulous, huge and spotless.
Just one down side I have to report. The first evening as people were arriving we decided to eat in the bar. Food was slow, and not very inspiring, and the service was appalling. Young staff standing about, dirty plates and glasses on our table and they stayed there. No-one seemed to be in charge. (Didnt complain in order to save the host embarrassment).
That didnt spoil the experience though, it was a lovely stay overall.

Room Tip: Get a deal, get a Premium room. Great for a special occasion.

This magnificent hotel is situated to the East of Ripon Road (A61) with the main entrance from Springfield Avenue. It is very close to the centre of Harrogate.

Despite having a large car park, it is not always possible to park on site if the hotel is full. If one does manage to get a place, there is usually a £5 per night parking charge.

The hotel still has quite extensive grounds, although more were sold off to build a Premier Inn very recently (not helping the parking.)

The rooms vary considerably in size and state of repair. The refurbished ones are very good. The better rooms are facing South overlooking the gardens.

The communal rooms on the ground floor are really spacious with amazing decoration, if beginning to look a little in need of refurbishment too.

The buffet breakfast can be busy, but offers a good choice and is well cooked. The restaurant food is excellent, with generous portions and competitively priced.

The staff are friendly and helpful. They cater well with large groups.

We stayed for three nights with the Morgan Sports Car Club. There was a bit of a problem on arrival because a lot of rooms weren't ready, but we just went to get a sandwich and drink at the bar (apparently they had allowed a lot of guests to not check out until 1 o'clock, which probably wasn't a good idea when a large group were due). Had read some reviews of how bad the rooms were so we were a bit sceptical, ours was great! large, clean, quiet and comfortable, we were on the fourth floor overlooking the front car park (which was good for us as the club cars were parked there). Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a good choice of cooked or cold buffet, nothing outstanding but perfectly acceptable. On Saturday evening we had a gala dinner, the three course meal was very good, especially as they were catering for 400 people who all wanted to be served at the same time. The service was very good.
The building certainly is Majestic but does need some TLC to bring it back to its former glory, it's a shame but there's a few small details that stop the whole experience being excellent - some windows in the ballroom areas obviously hadn't been cleaned for a long time, one of our towels had two holes, the spa bath didn't work, when they cleaned our room they didn't replenish the tea and milk on one morning, nothing major but a bit more attention to detail would elevate it to a higher rating in my opinion.
It's a great location, very central, close to Betty's Tea Rooms (which was lovely).
We'd stay again.

Staff were friendly, everyone you passed said Hello. Swimming pool facilities were good, and the hot tub was hot!! Very relaxing. Good choice at breakfast. We didn't have an evening meal as the dining room was fully booked, and also the treatments were booked for two full days, so we couldn't book those either. Very good central location, right next to the festival hall.

After reading the reviews here I was'nt expecting much. However how wrong can you be. Hubby rang night before we were due to stay after reading about the building work. The receptionist took are name said the building work had finished and she would put us in a delux room. Arrived lunch time parked the car and walked into the town centre. Went for lunch at the Palm court cafe excellent value and homemade food. Checked into the hotel 4ish we were on the second floor room 249. This was a large room large bahroom overlooking gardens. Bath robes and slippers provided 2 bottles of water. This room was clean. Plenty of provisions tea/coffee etc. The deal we were on was DBB + bottle of wine (travel zoo offer) we went for dinner I had melon to start followed by shoulder of lamb. Hubby went for terriane of chicken followed by pork belly well presented by friendly staff. The head waiter being from Spain so we were practiscing our Spainish out. We then walked through the gardens to Lucia bar/restaurant to have a drink. Went down for breakfast 8.45 yes there was a queue but didnt wait more then 5 mins to be seated. There was a morgan car rally going on in the hotel with some really good cars in the car park. Maybe we were lucky with our room but I would stay again. Downside the curtains could all do with cleaning carpets looked fine on the 2nd floor and bar/restaurent area.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 249 no issues at all with the room

We booked this hotel with Secret Escapes for a 2 night dinner bed and breakfast and we took the upgrade to a Premium room. We then added a third night. This was not a cheap holiday costing 130 pounds per night! We travel with Secret Escapes about once per month and have never been disappointed but this hotel is APPALLING.
Here is the outline of our 3 days:
1) arrived to find they had downgraded our room to a standard because we were travelling with dogs (which had been made clear and their website states dog friendly)
2. Refused to give us our Premium room stating they were fully booked (this hotel is enormous) and gave us a room with workmen doing maintenance outside the window.
3. We had to queue for breakfast for 30 minutes (this happened every morning regardless of time)
4. On day 2 they moved us to our premium room which was much bigger but still was on the first floor where the workmen were and still did not face the gardens which we had requested - it looked over the carpark.
5. We were told this room was special because it had a spa bath but it didn't work (apparently none of them work!)
6. Got woken up at 7.30am each morning by workmen climbing the scaffolding and repairing the building
7. Our room was 'serviced' but they just pulled the bedspread up over an unmade bed!
Really this place is awful - we talked to some other guests and they were as horrified as us - the service was pathetic - plenty of staff but no urgency or management. We talked to one of the waitresses in the restaurant and she said they were all contractors earning 4 pounds per hour - well you get what you pay for.
If this was a cheap 2 star hotel it would have been acceptable but a 4 star hotel charging 130 per night really needs to get its act together.

Went with my wife for a 5 night break but left a wee bit diasppointed. Hotel was fully booked,no problem but when we were asked if we wanted help with luggage (I have mild mobility disability), we were shown where a large luggage troley was located! Room was clean and comfy, 2nd floor but was in a corner part of building overlooking part of a roof & slight view of car park. Weather was very hot & sunny but window opened only slightly allowing no air to circulate freely.
First morning's breakfast was bit of a nightmare. Part of dining room sectioned off for a coach party resulting in queues and even when the group left no effort made tomopen the area up to reduce waiting time. Did not seem to be sufficient staff on breakfast duty as tables not cleared quick enough to be occupied again.
Dinner on 3 nights of the stay was generally well organised & presented, with staff pleasant and helpful. Bar staff were great, cheery and after first night always remebered our drinks. I enjoyed couple of treatments at the Spa centre while my wife went swimming. The pool is a bit small I felt for a hotel with 160-odd bedrooms but was not always busy, mainly due to the great weather I guess. Gym was ok for its size. There were tables outside the hotel at 2 locations if you choose to relax with a drink.
The hotel was built in 19th century to allow people to take advantage of the sulphur baths in Harrogate. In places the building shows its age and could do with some TLC. Some terrific artwork around the high walls in the patio bar.
It is about a 10 minute walk into Harrogate town centre, be aware, it is downhill from the hotel but uphill into town.
The hotel advertises large gardena but during our visit they were being covered in large marquees for a craft fair a couple of weeks after our trip.
Overall we enjoyed our visit but prefer a couple of other hotels we have visited within The Hotel Collection (formerly Puma Hotels).

Room Tip: Ensure you ask for a room with a view, eg, overlooking the gardens.
