We attended a wedding held at the Crown Hotel. Staying on site for us, was the ideal solution. The welcome we received from the reception (especially Emily - always smiling) was very good. As there was no parking available on the first night we were told where we could park in a street a few minutes walk away. We were lucky the following morning as some guests left, we were able to move the car to the parking right by the front door!
the room was fine, yes the floor boards creak but then after all it is an old building. We would have preffered a room with a better view - we were at the back, looking out at a wall with windows. As we knew we were only going to be sleeping there did not make an isssue of it or asked to be changed - but then being where we were it was extremely quiet. The bed was a bit soft or old?? One thing I found missing, was a long mirror!! Personally would have preffered a shower, than a bath one had to step into. The sink had a crack. Probably the bathrooms should be updated!
The breakfast is served in a wonderful room, the usual cold buffet and hot food - Tea Coffee served to you at the table.
The hotel is in a great position, just opposite the lovely Canal Gardens, where we had a walk - with shops on the door step.

This hotel with its magnificent frontage should be given a try by anyone staying at Harrogate.
The staff were helpful and obliging, without being intrusive, not always the case in some 'ultra' modern establishments who want everything from your e-mail to occupation! There are some hidden corners of this building that would benefit from some more TLC. But this is an old hotel and some floorboards may creak a little.
My advice is to go and enjoy it's superb oak carvings, high ceilings and cornices. The long corridors, listed front door etc. Tune yourself to the fact that every third step you take will awake a creaking board!
Finally, do not leave without dinning in their fabulous restaurant. My partner and I took advantage of a special offer, wow!!! Perfection on a plate for only £39 (that's for two) and a bottle of wine was included. Forget London, get up to The Crown at Harrogate.

At checkout they tried to make us pay again for our room even though we had fully payed in advance and had confirmation email to prove it. Receptionist's insistence that we were wrong despite evidence was particularly stressful.

A shame as it left bitter taste after a very pleasant break.

If you like big old historic hotels, with well preserved original features, then this hotel fits the bill. But. You need to compromise a little.

Everything would be perfect, from check in with friendly and helpful staff, to excellent food, including fantastic breakfast. Except a recent upgrade seems to have missed an essential point: hotels are ultimately a place of rest. And you may struggle to enjoy a full night's sleep. Beds and mattresses are old, uncomfortable and too small. Floorboards are VERY creaky, as are door hinges. No air conditioning. Original sash windows very rattly even in a slight wind. And although the radiators are fitted with thermostats, the pipework is exposed along the length of the wall, and that does get very hot. And as the fire escape was close to our window, a heavy downpour can be somewhat deafening on the ironwork.

Parking is limited. There's room for perhaps 10 cars out front. But plenty of pay and display spaces nearby. However, if you can manage to grab a space nearby up Cornwall Road (just beside the Valley Gardens) you can park for free once you get past the zone parking sign. As everywhere in Harrogate is pretty much within walking distance of the hotel, you might like to just leave your car there for the duration of your stay if you are lucky enough to find a spot.

So apart from getting very little sleep, it's a great hotel. Although I'd have been very upset if I'd paid £170 as per the online quote on their website. Thank goodness for booking.com.

No, I don't think I'll be staying again.

Last week I went with a group of work colleagues from London to a conference in Harrogate. We stayed in the Crown and it was excellent. This is a very special, distinctive, grand hotel which is proud of its well deserved reputation and history (it was founded as a hotel about about 400 years ago). It is in a lovely part of Harrogate, close to the centre and Betty's but with a stunning park, just seconds away, tucked behind the hotel. The facilities are completely up-to-date but are sensitive to the hotel's heritage. My room was great - very comfortable bed and pillows. The breakfasts are superb - everything you could wish for, served in a stunning high-ceiling period dining room. Above all, I would praise the warm welcome and exceptional service from the staff. They combined unfailing friendliness with professionalism and all seemed proud to be working at The Crown. In particular, Emily, on reception, seemed to be constantly on duty and always with a winning smile that made us feel at home! Definately the place to stay in Yorkshire.

Room Tip: I would recommend asking for a room with a view as some face an inner courtyard. I mentioned this a...

stayed for one night on our way south. Good location although due to hotel being full parking was a problem. Great location near to centre of the town. Understanding historic nature of hotel, must be a real problem to maintain.
Bedroom (standard double) was spacious but old fashioned, bed too small, too soft, furniture old fashioned and worn. TV on wall bracket and small . Noisy guests late at night both in corridor and outside and floor boards very creaky!
Reception staff very friendly and welcoming. Did not try restaurants in hotel as wanted to sample something in the town.
Breakfast served in huge room, good display of cold items, service very prompt and attentive. Hot items in chafing dishes, some items looked a little sad, eggs pale and considering numbers of staff and facilities thought breakfast items could have been more extensive with more choice for specials.
Overall a pleasant stay due to location

A numer of Years ago I stayed at this, at the time, very run down Hotel, however, last week I had the pleasure of staying there again.
What a difference, over the last two years, this hotel has undergone an upgrade to a very high standard which has incorporated such attention to detail that the old original comfortable features have been maintained.
You will not regret a visit to this hotel where you will receive a warm reception, comfortable and elegant surroundings, excellent bedrooms with all mod cons are within, make sure not to miss the traditional breakfast, all laid out to allow a vast choice of well prepared food to get you off to a good start to your day, the staff in attendance were very professional in their duties

Room Tip: Personally, I chose a double room for single occupancy just to enjoy the space provided, the staff d...
