“Faded Glory”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2012

Ideal for shopping, restaurants and nearby park. Breakfast is standard fare but good. The receptionists are very pleasant and welcoming.

A local resident summed it up as "faded glory". Two other guests said "It's just like being in "Are You Being Served?". The hotel needs substantial refurbishment. The decor is dull and unimaginative and the furniture looks cheap. Plastic flowers decorate the reception area and was the bar really open? The staff at breakfast time although responsive appeared to lack any inter-personal skills or personality. For about 100+ rooms the parking facilities are totally inadequate.

Room Tip: To get in the small car park arrive about 11.am when people are checking out.

Dear Bob-bulginbarra

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review of Trip Advisor, im sorry that you felt the general standard of the hotel was looking tired, we constantly repainting and changing soft furnishings etc in order to improve.
The carpark unfortunately is the size that it we do not promote ourselves as having a large carpark.
I would like to thank you for your feedback on these matters

Kind Regards

Arrived here quite late on a Sunday, was here for a one night stop over due to a work event at another Hotel.
The lady behind the desk wasn't really very helpful, very short and to the point, no extra smile or anything like that. So wasn't a great first impression of the staff at this place.
The front is very grand and looks amazing, as does the lobby of this hotel.
Car parking is very bad, it was pouring with rain and at first we had nowhere to park. I understand this is an old hotel and the car park isn't huge, but some sort of information about this would be appreciated.
The rooms are lovely, and the bathrooms are modern. Bed is very comfortable.
Floorboards are very noisy, but this is to be expected with an old building.
Breakfast was very tasty. Really good choice of what to have.
Would stay here again, but it does feel like more of a work hotel than anything else.

Having just spent three nights in harrogate the first two at the studley which we could not fault the crown came as a shock. tired and overpriced with no imagination in the decor. your listings give the crown a far better rating than it deserves. i am a much travelled person and this is the first poor review i have made of a hotel as generally tripadvisor guidance has been excellent.peter c

Dear Peterc

Many thanks for taking the time write a review on Trip Advisor, I am sorry that you compared The Crown unfavourably with the Studley Hotel, both hotels are very different in terms of size and style, so to make comparisons can be a little unfair.
But we do appreciate your feedback.

Cracking Victorian hotel with great original features, in a good location close to the town centre. We stayed in a room on the first floor with a huge floor to ceiling window overlooking the front of the hotel. Room very comfortable complete with creaking floorboards !
Breakfast was good and staff very helpful and free car parking a big bonus - but book in early to take advantage as spaces are limited.
Can certainly recommend.

this is a wonderful hotel victorian, smashing location, but the food let it down a little ,the portions are a little mean ,but who ever made the sweats need a kick up the back side ,they were rubbish .i had a tiramasu which ilove ..what came out was cream..when i complained to the waiter he told me the chef would disagree with me ,would still go back as we like the place ...was not very happy when leaving some polish member of staff sticking her finger in some soup to try it ...there were two wedding on at the time ..i am sure the guest where unaware of that

Myself and Wife drove down from Edinburgh to meet with friends Con and Cathy who drove up from London we decided to visit Harrogate for a couple of days relax and enjoy ourselves the ladies do the shopping and the men in the pub

We were amazed to see the humongous dining room area we namely my friend Con and myself have travelled world wide and never seen any other dining room like this one in the Crown Hotel beautiful makes all the difference when you have room to move and enjoy your breakfast too also we enjoyed the large range of food for the breakfast too very well presented and you could approach the staff for assistance and thet were very very helpful too dining room staff room staff and also the reception everyone made us welcome here bar staff too we had a few meals in the bar and once again excellent value for money and service too cannot complain whilst we stayed here excellent service in every way

The Management should be very proud of their staff as very pleasant mannerisms and helpful in every way the head house keeper too very pleasant spoke to her whilst we were there all in all we enjoyed our stay here and we would most definately come back to the Crown in future possibly for a longer duration the next time

Only one disappointment the car park was of the small nature but apart from that everything else as stated previously excellent cannot fault this hotel and staff so many thanks ALL for our enjoyable stay we will most definately be back here especially for the woman to complete their shopping as many shops to choose from too for them that is we will remain in the bars

So many thanks once again we meaning my wife and myself do not really compliment places but in this instance we were very happy also our friends Con Cathy too thank you

A medium sized hotel centrally located in Harrogate. There's free (but limited) parking in front of the hotel. The ground floor of the hotel retains a lot of the building's original features, but the other floors rather remind me of a hospital. The rooms look to have been refurbished recently but are still a little dated and awkward in terms of design and layout. The rooms have two small TVs rather than a single large one for some reason, good job I had my glasses! Cleanliness was good and the bed was very comfortable, the shower was good too. My room was somewhat cold and there was nothing I could do to adjust this (the radiator thermostats were already on max).

There's free wifi available throughout the hotel but it's not terribly fast. You have to request a code from reception each day.

The bar has a very limited choice of beers available on tap but a reasonable bottled selection. Breakfast was a bit of a mixed bag... there are really good fresh, warm croissants but the coffee was a little weak. The cooked breakfast wasn't great - the sausages were cheap, the bacon so dried out that it was only just edible and there's no fried eggs available (only scrambled). Possibly they can be cooked to order but I didn't check. On the plus side they had proper cooked mushrooms rather than the usual tinned ones.

When checking-out I found the reception desk unmanned and no staff around anywhere, so was forced to use the express check-out which will delay my company expenses claim while I wait for the invoice.

All in all not a bad hotel and I will probably stay here again.

Dear DJ1471

Many Thanks for taking the time to write a review on Trip Advisor, i am sorry that some aspects of your trip were not up to the standard one would expect.
The breakfast - all of our produce is locally sourced in the area and im sorry it was not up to your expectations, especially since we came 2nd in the "best breakfast" award competition hosted by Late Rooms
The wi fi is an ongoing project and i know measures have been put into place so it will be quicker.
I am pleased that you would use The Crown Hotel again for any future stays and look forward to seeing you again.
