“Bargain, great location and breakfast, dodgy rooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2009

Stayed here to attend the beer festival with friends (I'd previously stayed here on business for a conference too) as it's so close to the conference centre. We had a room at the front with lovely large windows, adequate room size and bathroom OK nothing special but everything functioning. Our friends however discovered a very large patch of mould on the wall in their room. They informed reception who told them they would have to move to a small double (unknown how small although the standard doubles are not large by any means) but after they refused were given the biggest suite I've ever seen! Strangely though it still did not seem overly luxurious even though there was a four poster bed, leather sofas in the seperate lounge and a double walkin shower with luxury toiletries in the bathroom.there was even a sperate hallway and french doors to some outside space - it just seemed tired, sparse and a bit unloved. With a bit of design and modernisation this hotel could be impressive but the public areas are quite swish, the bar is nice and breakfast is amongst the best we've experienced. Staff are polite and knowledgeable and friendly and given the low cost £70 double room including the excellent breakfast I'd recommend this hotel - just make sure you are happy with your room. Parking is difficult too, just head for the back or get there early for a front spot.

We stayed at the Crown for three nights to celebrate our 51st wedding anniversary. The hotel was just perfect. The staff were welcoming and very friendly. The public rooms were very elegant and had been tastefully refurbished to restore them to their original victorian splendour Our bedroom was comfortable and contained everything we needed. The food was beautifully presented and very appetising.I would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly.

We bought our room on Tripadvisor through activehotels. The price was right but when we got there we were offered not a double room but a tiny twin room. Freshly refurbished -- that part was OK, and for the price the smallness was acceptable. They wanted £70 or £100 for a double. And the heating didn't work and we had to ask for help. They offered us another room, somewhat bigger but even colder and in the end we settled for two extra duvets. Look, we don't spend much time in the room and I don't give bad reviews for lack of luxury in a cheap room. But the lack of heating (the radiators in other parts of the hotel were hot) is unforgivable.

The self-service full English breakfast was great. If it hadn't been for the refusal of a double bed and the freezing temperature we'd give this hotel a good score.

BTW a local shopkeeper we met, a relative of an old friend of ours from Harrogate, raised her eyebrows when we told her where we were staying. Guess she knew.

The building itself is lovely. The staff personable and helpful. But we won't be staying there again. The Egyptian cotton sheets were great but the mattresses were too soft. Crown Hotel: are you readin this?

We had a view of a stone wall, but for £70 we didn't expect more.

I didn't pay fo the Internet service because Network Rail provides the same thing for free and we were only staying in town one night.

Use this hotel is you want a value for money weekend break in a great location. After reading some of the reviews on this site for hotels in Harrogate, I booked a room as a treat for my friend's birthday with fingers crossed. The fact that the manager actually replied to the posts was a positive.

The hotel is centrally located. Parking at the hotel is limited but there is plenty of metered, on street parking. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and the car park was full but we parked on the street and paid until six o'clock after which parking is free until Monday.

Staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was without a view, built to the back of the hotel, but was large, fresh, clean and warm. The bathroom was spotless and the towels were brilliant - big and fluffy!

The hotel has been refurbished to a good but not luxurious standard. It is a beautiful building but lacks the wow factor that we have come to expect. The dining room is an impressive space.

The breakfast was good with a fantastic selection of fresh fruit. I have stayed at many five star hotels and this was as good. Just not the egg!

Before returning home we visited Betty's Tearooms. It's currently being refurbished, so space is limited and there was a twenty five minute wait. Wait, it is well worth it!

We would certainly return to Harrogate again and stay at the Crown.

The Crown is a "grand dame" of a hotel full of character and charm.

We visited as a last minute valentines break and on an offer from a last minute bookings company. It was not cheap - but for a special occasion it was a perfect setting.

We had an executive suite which was large and comfortable; a seperate lounge, bedroom with four poster bed, large bathroom and entrance lobby. One quibble here - as with another review - there was no heating in the bathroom; strange. However all fittings and fixtures were modern and the feel of the suite was that of good quality. The bed was extremely comfortable.

We had booked a valentines dinner and were lucky to get a table (albeit early). Again - not a low cost option but one has to remember this is Harrogate. The food was excellent and the service likewise.

Being centrally located we then left the hotel and had a wander around this very pleasant and genteel (well heeled) town packed full of interesting bars and restaurants.

We took breakfast the following morning. It is a buffet offering and the staff were a little slow in clearing tables and bringing coffee/tea and toast but the place was full and they were doing their best to provide a good service.

So - all in all - a very memorable stay and for the right reasons. Let me stress it was not a "bargain" break and on the pricey side but for great atmosphere and a genuine offering of historic surroundings this hotel is excellent. We loved it.

A group of 6 female family members stayed a night at the Crown. We had 3 twin rooms each. The hotel appears to have recently been refurbished and has a nice interior. The history of the building gives it good character.
The rooms were nice and spacious, clean and comtemporary. They were stocked with the usual tea, coffee, showergel, hair dryer etc. There were flat screen televisions. The down side of the rooms were that they were really quite cold! My room had a minute radiator and there was no heating at all in the bathroom. It was a cold winter day and it was uncomfortabley cold in the room.
Staff were friendly and helpful and we managed to get parked in the front car park which has a small number of spaces. A good breakfast was provided.
Harrogate is not big but the Crown is very centrally placed for shops, bars and restaurants.
We paid 70 pounds per room and were very happy with our stay.
