“Dogs should be in Kennels not in hotel bedrooms”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2012

Nice hotel with a good location. Rooms were a bit shabby as were the public corridors. However the staff were excellent and food was good.

Maybe a reason for shabby rooms and carpets?? The hotel allows dogs. This was the weekend of a dog show in the town and they were allowed in the hotel bedrooms. This disgusted and shocked me as I have never before seen dogs allowed in rooms. I won't be going there again if I want to stay with a dog I will book into kennels for a lot less, that's my opinion of where dogs should be. The hotel is in need of a major refurbishment.

Room Tip: It's a bit on the shabby side and they allow dogs.

This hotel is rated as a 3*, maybe so in the 1970's which is when I imagine the hotel was last decorated. If you value standards of cleanliness and decor this hotel is best avoided. The carpets in the hallways are held together with masking tape, peeling paintwork and damp, musty smells made this a thoroughly unpleasant experience. We made the mistake of trusting other reviews from this site and others that portrayed this hotel in a favourable light. All I can say is it worries me what standards people deem as acceptable.

We have written to the company on two occasions expressing our concerns and asking for feedback however it has now been three months since our stay and we have had no reply. This is indicative of the state of this hotel. It is such a shame because Harrogate is lovely but there are many nicer hotels to choose for your stay.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel

Stayed at the Cairn as part of a wedding party so got a good discount for the room. On arrival were greated by a very friendly young women who explained everything in a helpful manner. I agree, the hotel is somewhat worn at the seams but I actually liked liked the old-fashioned way of things. Our room was fine, we had a flat-screen tv, it was teeny and instructions would have been helpful. Our bathroom was absolutely fine, the shower was fairly good, a shelf for shampoo/soap would have been handy. A bedside lamp on both sides of the bed would have been useful, but maybe that's just being a bit picky!
Breakfast was good, lots of choice on the well-stocked buffet and again a nice friendly guy was on hand to take our order for toast and coffee.
Don't know whether I would pay full price for a stay there, but I was pretty happy with our stay.

We spent 3 nights here and on arrival our first impressions were that the hotel had some wonderful features but needs a huge investment of money to bring it up to a good standard. Our room was on the 3 floor overlooking car park, it was big with what seemed a small bed. Everywhere was clean but the toilet was put together with black tape and made a horrendous noise when you flushed. We only ate breakfast which was fine done on a buffet style and the staff were helpful and friendly.
On the last night there was a fire alarm at 12.30am and everyone had to go down the emergency fire escape which was very difficult for some of the elderly guests and we were concerned for their safety. On arrival at the car park there was no one telling us anything , no roll call and then everyone just wandered back in when the alarm stopped - glad there was no fire! There never was any explanation only an apology left in the lift the next morning.
Overall we would not stay here again as I believe there are much nicer ones available. Please get it refurbished it is such a character building.

It must be really expensive keeping on top of maintaining such a grand building ! The entrance and public areas were fantastic, but sadly as you got to the bedrooms and corridors things did begin to look and feel a bit dated. Our room was perfectly adequate but felt like it had not been decorated for 20 years or more - peeling paint on the windows, very worn carpets etc. ( I haven't been in a hotel that doesn't have a digital flat screen TV for years, but this one was still hanging onto an old analogue set complete with snowstorm picture).

HOWEVER, it was all very clean and perfectly adequate for our short stay. The staff were very pleasant, it was only a short walk to the centre of Harrogate and the breakfast was good without being great. All in all, a good place to stay if you can get a good deal, but stay away if you expect your room to be modern !

After a grand reception the decor of the hotel is a little dated - I felt that I had stepped into an Agatha Christie novel, but the rooms are well appointed and immaculately clean. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food was very good. It is a short walk into Harrogate - albeit with a bit of a hill, and I would recommend this hotel as a great base for exploring the town.

Friendly staff, good service. Excellent breakfast. Public areas quite grand. Bedrooms comfortable and clean. Window frames needed to be refurbished in room as paint flaking off but was nt a problem. Would stay again.
