My wife and I have just returned from a two night "winter warmer" break, with an excellent headline cost of £158 for two nights dinner bed and breakfast, and tea and a muffin on arrival.
The public rooms in the hotel are large, bright, with lovely high ceilings typical of the victorian period of the hotel.

The bedroom was large and comfortable, with a large bathroom too, but in drastic need of an update. The decor was particularly drab and in need of refurbishment. The tv was a very poor, small screen CRT, with a pathetic selection of channels, not even including free view.

Breakfast was buffet style, and was good, although on the second day we ordered kippers and poached egg which were freshly cooked and delicious.

The set dinner had a limited range of starters and deserts (served at the table), and about six choices of mains served carvery style. It was possible to order a dish from the A La Carte menu for a not insignificant supplement. The food was not bad, but not gourmet by any means, and the microwaved vegetables and hot desserts were disappointing.

The bar area was very comfortable, but prices were a little high, especially over £5 for a 175ml glass of not very good house wine, and £3 for a pot of ordinary tea.

There was excellent free wifi in the public areas, but this was disappointingly not accessible from the bedrooms.

Staff were uniformly excellent and provided excellent service.

All in all a good value for money break in a comfortable hotel that drastically needs some updating and investment.

just finished a 2 day break to this super hotel. Step back in time within this hotel surroundings. Photos around the walls show how it was in 1900. Great staff and the food was delicious. The most comfortable bed we have
slept in in years. Must visit

Room Tip: you even get a toasted muffin and tea to welcome you all included. Biscuits with tea in room.

Stayed at the Cairn Hotel for the Yorkies annual dinner dance. Yet again another fantastic time. The staff were incredibly helpful, polite and courteous. The rooms are in need of some updating but with such a large hotel it is difficult to do everything at once. I had friends that had upgraded adn were very pleased with their rooms, things like renovation take time! The food was even better than ast year, we had a 4 course meal served by really friendly staff. They did an amazing job considering they had to feed 170+ very hungry bikers! Same again for breakfast, a buffet style, slight hiccup with waiting for bacon but if you want your food fresh, along with the other 200 people there then you expect to wait 5 minutes whilst they do it fresh.
Overall, another fantastic stay and look forward to coming again next year :-)

Room Tip: Think about upgrading if you prefer modern

Our club has been using The cairn for many years now and with the events team dealing with all our requests and ALL dealt with to our entire satisfaction we knew our 180 strong group would be in for a fantastic weekend.
A warm and very friendly welcome greeted our group on both days and with an excellent choice of food for our Friday 3 course carvery the weekend was of to a very good start, the staff on reception - the bar and the dining area worked very hard and with big smiles and good conversation its a credit to the management to reach this level.
All the styles of rooms were allocated to our group, and all with no complaints , the rooms were warm and spotless, yes small T.V's but we were not there to do that, it was the main lobby and bar area were the compliments came flooding in , just a brilliant ambience of this beautiful building .
We used the pavilion ballroom for our masquerade ball and the guys set the room exactly to our requests, the room was well heated for the arrival and the waiters and team leaders made sure our gala dinner was served hot and very promptly, to serve 170 with minimum breaks between courses deserves high praise, our feedback from members has been very good,
We had dancers / t.v's Crissy Rock / a local band and a D.J to entertain us and with the stage set up and sprung dance floor we laughed and danced until the early hours.
Breakfast after two heavy nights, again, was all we required with most of our group descending around 9am it proved no problem to get a table and be served quickly - top marks kitchen and waiters.
about the room we paid for upgrade to 123 size and style of room brilliant , spotless with the nice touches of wine/ fruit / water and sweets ...if you want a view not a good room but the size and style makes up for that totally.

value for money - oh yes / good atmosphere - ditto / accommodation and meals-ditto/ the staff excellent and very accommodating, to sum up - just to say we have booked again for 2014 says it all really 5 stars to the hotel and the lovely people working there -.see you next year

Room Tip: corner suites having great views , pay extra for an upgrade

Well here we are again, back at the Cairn Hotel for the Yorkies annual `posh` bash.
As always, it's a pleasure coming to the Cairn Hotel. The staff always remember us from the previous year and are always curtious and helpful
This year we had an upgraded room which was very nice. As you entered the room you came into a spacious lounge area, complete with a nice sofa, a television and coffee table. The table contained two bottles of wine, a generous sized bowl of fruit, two bags of peanuts, two bottles of water and an assortment of chocolates.
All of the above were replenished on a daily basis, along with a newspaper of your choice!
Walking through the lounge took you into a very nice sized bedroom, this also had a television, a decent sized desk/dressing table, along with a wardrobe complete with dressing gowns and various sized towels. There was also a hair dryer, a trouser press and facilities for making tea and coffee
Leading from the bedroom was a very nice bathroom, light and airy with various shampoo's etc for use during your stay.
Just to sum it all up.....great room, nice and warm, the Cairn did us proud.....again!!

Room Tip: Our room number was 323, it was excellent!!

Stayed accompanying my husband on a business trip for four nights in snowy January. Room warm and comfortable, a good size, and spotlessly clean. Bathroom also spotless and nice and warm, very important to me. T.V. small and dated, would have liked a flat screen, and no free view channels. Entrance foyer imposing, as are all the public rooms, really nice. I spent most mornings sitting in the lounge/bar, and staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good when it was a buffet, not so good when plated service. All in all a nice hotel, and would come back.

Lovely old hotel. Clean warm and massive public areas. Very imposing dining room but the dinner menu seemed a little un inspiring -but they do a good breakfast. Buffet breakfast (which I prefer) when there are lots in the hotel, lots of choice and good quality.
The rooms are fairly big and imposing. Bed was a little firm for me. Bathroom was very clean. It was also very warm , which was good as there was snow outside.. Tv in the room is on the small side, and needs binoculars to see from the bed. But that's all I wOuld complain about. Thoroughly recommend it.
