“Attended the Craft show”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Stayed at the Cairn Hotel beautifully decorated for Christmas - with a group of ladies attending the Craft Show. Our room was in an area that was being redecorated but it was comfortable and all the facilities were first class. The meals were excellent and the staff couldn't have been be more helpful. I would recommend the hotel and hope to be back again next year

We stayed for a long Phil Hurst fabulous dance weekend. The hotel has a lot of Victorian character especially in the huge reception area. The reception staff were freindly and helpfull and this attitude extended to the rest of the staff. The breakfast choice was more than I would normally eat in the morning. The evening meal choice 3 staters 4 mains and 4 sweets, always a vegy choice. Although we queued for our meals the service was efficient. Considering there was a large group for the weekend the service was very good. The hotel rambles and some of the ground floor charm disappears on the third floor, the corridors are cold and look 'tired'. Although there are plans to refurbish some areas. Our room had two single beds, a double would have been cosier. It was warm and clean with tea and coffee making. A good sized bathroom that looked new, it was clean and warm with plenty of clean towels. No shortage of hot water.
I would stay for another dance weekend but if staying in Harrogate again I might want to try another hotel for a comparison.
The hotel is a 10 min stroll into the centre of Harrogate

We spent a really enjoyable dance weekend here with friends and intend to do this again

But we would be much less likely to return as only a place to stay

The ballroom is massive, and with a stage half way down the room, is ideal for events of this type

Phil Hurst is a very good host, who plays interesting music and provides a very wide variety of dancing options

The hotel is built on a grand scale with large grounds, very large entrance area and high ceilings all round

Unfortunately, the sheer size of this place is the main problem because there is insufficient finance to keep it up to standard

It is all rather down at heel, and staffing at mealtimes is often inadequate, leading to poor service

For breakfast, it is self service apart from tea/coffee and toast, and on our first morning we had to request both, and when it did arrive, the teapot was only half full with no extra hot water. We needed another cup of tea immediately on returning to our room

For dinner, the main course is also self service. We had to get the drinks ourselves on both nights, because no-one came to serve us

The room was a good size, although we were facing a wall at a fairly short distance. The shower was over the bath, but was a very powerful electric model

Free wi-fi (in the downstairs public rooms) was a nice addition however

Good location for the town centre

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us for the Hurst Dance Holiday.
The hotel is currently undergoing a refurbishment and a 'mood board' is available in the lounge for all our guests to monitor its progress.
I am very sorry that you felt that the service was not sufficient for the group especially as another guest from your party wrote to say that the service for the group was efficient, we do always try to ensure that all our guests recieve our first class service and I apologise if you feel this was not the case.
We do hope to see you again at one of Mr Hurst's dance holidays next year.
Kind regards

we stayed for 3 nights dinner bed and breakfast, and really enjoyed our tay. The staff were friendly and helpful, food excellent (complements to the chef). Although parts of the hotel are a little tired there is a big refurbishment underway. Our room was comfortable and clean and well equipped Hotel only a short walk or bus ride from town centre. Whats not to like?
