The Hotel is within easy walking distance of the centre of Harrogate. When we arrived, most of the car park was taken over by temporary exhibition halls being erected for the "Gifts Fair", hence it was difficult to find a place to park. I expect that normally, parking is quite easy.

The Hotel looks old and a little run down and this shows inside even though it is undergoing a refurbishment programme. It is a rabbit warren of a place and internally looks very tired.

On the plus side, we were welcomed enthusiastically by reception and given the most thorough briefing I have ever had. Security at the reception desk was pleasingly through. Whenever we asked for our key, we were asked to show our check-in slip to prove we were the people staying in that room – this is reassuring because you know that no one can just get a key to any room by asking. Whenever we stood in front of an empty reception area, one of the hotel staff would stop what they were doing and immediately come and assist us – nice touch.

The lift was not yet working (a new one was being installed) and a porter was offered to carry our bag to the third floor. The third floor is probably where the cheapest rooms are – the room was a reasonable size, bed very comfortable, the bathroom as big as some hotel bedrooms and reasonably well equipped for the lower end of the price market. Although booked as a “city view room”, it had a view of the nearby roof and pigeons.

After a good night’s sleep, breakfast was an interesting event. Plenty of staff, many of whom had some language difficulty and consequently our tea, coffee and toast arrived three times. The full cooked breakfast could have been better – plenty of variety but on the cold side and the scrambled eggs had set nicely solid and the fried eggs looked very old and were not replaced during our breakfast (presumably because there were some left). The continental breakfast was as continental and reasonable as they can ever be in the UK.

Would I stay there again? – yes because it was good value for a very popular tourist town, reasonably comfortable and the delights of Harrogate are just down the road.

Having traveled for 5 hours to attend a training course I was impressed when I found a very friendly receptionist at the desk, especially as I arrived at 11pm on a Sunday night. The room was a good size and was well presented, although the bed did have a bit of a creak.
The service at breakfast was ok but the staff didnt seem too bothered about our group preferring instead to serve those attending breakfast in suites/business wear and not those wearing more casual attire like us.
Overall a pleasant experience and I would certainly recommend this hotel to a friend.

I stayed as part of a party for the weekend recently (April 2007) and had a lovely time. The entrance and foyer area was very impressive with plenty of comfortable seating. Booking in was effortless and I was soon unpacked and heading back downstairs. My room was a very good size, spotless and well furnished, as was the bathroom.
As part of a group of nearly 100 mealtimes can sometimes be a bit long winded but, although we had to queue, that queue went down quickly due to the efficient and friendly staff.
There was plenty of choice on the menu and the food was cooked nicely and was very tasty. No complaints about the quality or quantity of food.
The staff throughout were extremely friendly. They were among the best I have experienced.
Everyone I spoke to in our party thoroughly enjoyed their stay at this hotel and we will be voting with our feet and will be returning for a repeat visit.

Close to the centre of Harrogate, within walking distance of most attractions. Looks a bit run down and has an institutional feel to it. Having said that, our rooms had been refurbished recently to a good standard and the reception staff resolved a mix-up over the booking efficiently and without making a fuss. We had breakfast in the hotel but no evening meals. The restaurant area is huge and looks shabby but the breakfast food was OK - plenty of choice and helpful waiting staff. A good value tourist choice as a base for exploring Harrogate and the surrounding area. There's no reason to risk eating in the hotel. Harrogate is full of decent restaurants.

We stayed at the Cairn Hotel for a friends wedding.

The hotel itself was clean and staff were generally pleasant and friendly.

The rooms were basic but clean. Glad we weren't paying the full amount for them or we would have been very upset - as we booked through the wedding party we stayed at a discounted rate.

The breakfast was great (although had to wait some time for toast and tea and not many veggie options!)

Had a major problem with the hot water in the morning as all the guests in the old section of the hotel didn't have any! When I mentioned this to the reception she stated that some one had been down to check the boiler and there was nothing wrong and we must have been mistaken!!!! While I was stood there at least three other guest were complaining of the same thing so obviously all the guests waking up that morning expecting a shower were mistaken! Very rude and unhelpful.

If you are to stay at the Cairn it did have is positives but only if you are staying in the newly refurbished rooms - they are like a different hotel.

All in all an okay stay but wouldn't recommend paying full rates as it certainly wouldn't be worth it.

  • Liked — The fact that the wedding was held there!
  • Disliked — The fact that there was no hot water and no apology for this in the morning!

Reviewed 27 February 2007

Hi,
As i read reviews and use them to select hotels i stay in, i thought for once i would write one based on my experiences. I play bridge and we always go to Harrogate to play in this event every February. It's always played at the Cairn although this is the first time we have stayed there at the venue. First things first, booked this over the phone 4 rooms, 3 twins 1 double, £71.90 DB&B the twins and 81.90 the double, although none of us wanted dinner (later two of us decided to eat dinner out of convenience) as a result they previously agreed to knock £10 off/night for this. When I arrived this had become two doubles two twins all the same price, hmm. They still agreed to knock of the tenner and later they did credit my card. When you arrive they want payment in full - ask to be shown the room, mine was pretty drab, dated decor, tired carpets, bathroom beginning to crumble, although the room was very clean & tidy. The staff are nearly all Polish and are very pleasant indeed, mostly exceed to your wishes when they understand them. The food oh dear Breakfast was edible and quite good, buffet style, replensihed and not tired looking. Evening meal - school dinners, not great.
Also do not book this hotel if you like doing anything other than sitting around - there is nothing "at all" to do in this hotel.
The bar is communal, no fruit machines, no pool table, no television not that these things are important to me. No games room that I could find no pool - no doubt its off site but what good is that? There is no night time ambience either. Might as well be at the railway station bar. The staff's attitude is the upside, Harrogate is quiet and rural and so people staying here probably want peace and quiet - but why not have the choice? All in all a poor hotel although they are doing it up, paint as flaking off my door so in dire need. So will have to see how it shapes up, alas its not the only problem they need to look at. I might stay again - but would only eat breakfast here and only because it is where the bridge is played and so is convenient but i dont think its worth anything like the 70-80 notes they want, more like 45. I spoke to taxi drivers here and they say there are really no decent hotels in Harrogate so if your going to book a bad one might as well be this? Good luck ...
