“TREYN HOLIDAY”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

We were guests at The Cedar Court Hotel from June 12th to June 16th as part of a group with TREYN Company. Our over all impression was that of a well managed hotel with lots of staff to meet our needs. Our room was spacious, very clean, quiet and over looked the rear of the property. The hotel offered a varied menu each evening but the breakfasts were outstanding with choices to suit all tastes. Truly amazing. The hotel is within easy walking distance for shopping in Harrogate and train station. An enjoyable stay and would certainly re-visit.

We stayed here for two nights over the weekend. Whilst apparently a 4* hotel, I would not say that the hotel displayed that standard. My simple yard-stick for a hotel is that the room should be clean, comfortable, quiet and adequately equipped. The room was clean, adequately equipped and moderately comfortable (although the beds were far too soft), but it fell short on quietness by a long way.

Firstly the rooms are not air conditioned. Nothing wrong with that, until you realise that to cool the room means opening the window, with the ensuing noise issues. Secondly - and we were perhaps unlucky here - our room had an electric shoe polisher on its outside stud wall. When guests tried to use this (at all hours) any hope of sleep was abandoned. It was deafeningly loud. This was not helped by the fact that our room (228) was next to the stairs, and the fire door onto the stairs closed after each guest chose to walk down a floor, with a loud thud, which also impeded sleep. And finally hotel guests seem to have a remarkable ability to shout in bedroom corridors in the early hours of the morning (like 2 am!). Such inconsiderate behaviour might easily be mitigated by prominent signs in bedroom corridors "Please remember - guests sleeping".

Breakfast was pretty unimpressive too - when we asked for a poached egg on toast, it arrived - one egg on an un-buttered piece of toast, all served on a side plate, no garnish. Not professional at all.

All in all, a very uninspiring experience.

When I explained to the duty manager the lack of sleep, he apologised, but didn't really seem to grasp the issue at all. Words come cheap, of course.

Room Tip: Don't opt for one near the stairs or shoe polishers !

Stayed here twice over 10 years ago and the food then was fantastic so returned based on this experience. What a mistake and supports the saying 'never go back'.

We booked a Superior Room and were told on arrival that we had also been upgraded and to be fair it was a very nice refurbished and dual aspect room, spoilt only by the intruding ceiling level glass partitioning. However the large colourful settee in the window area was so low backed and uncomfortable that it was really unusable, and even had it been OK. it was at 90 degrees to the TV on the wall, so the only comfortable place to watch TV was in or on the bed.
The alarm clock was on a table about 10 feet from the bed so not much use

Bathroom was small and bath narrow and spoilt by having the tap in the centre on the wall so intruded into what was already a tight space.Supposed to have luxury toiletries but only actually had shampoo/conditioner which was difficult to lather, no shower gel. Bath was also high to get out of and would have caused difficulties to anyone with limited mobility.Bath door had a fault which was reported on days one and two but not until day 3 and after further enquiries did anyone tell us what was happening about it.

Bathroom extractor fan very noisy and stayed on at least 20 minutes after switching off the
light.

WiFi reception was appalling and could only get this by standing in the corner of the room near the door and even then was fickle and very slow. Whilst free this is in severe need of updating.

Turning to the food well breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice, but the cooked items were dreadful with the bacon usually overcooked and all the rashers congealed together so difficult to take one or two. Sausages also overcooked and dry and as for the fried eggs well these had been congealed in a large pan and as a result all stuck together then the 'chef' had cut them to separate them into squares or triangles or other weird shapes, and the yolks were rock hard. Most of the problem lay in cooking too much food at one time and badly, instead of smaller batches properly, coupled with items staying in the heated containers and adding to the drying out problem.

Service was poor with many shared tables although we were lucky and did not experience this, but the person greeting you was curt and simply took you to a table and said help yourself, do you want tea or coffee?.

Dinner in the Brasserie was not much better, we had taken a meal deal but this was a mistake as whilst the menus read well the food did not live up to its narrative. The nightly table d'hote menu was not different enough to the a la carte and the quality of the food and its preparation were certainly not up to a 4 star hotel standard,
In particular the vegetables were always undercooked to the point of being raw, and the 'creamy mashed potato' was so thick and tasteless as to be unedible.

The only 2 good points about the brasserie were the soups, which were always hot and delicious and the staff, in particular Monika and Nicole who really tried and were very pleasant and helpful.

A number of these issues were mentioned to the hotel management, but looking back at other reviews it seems unlikely that any changes will occur.

One final point our room rate included a number of complimentary features including a daily newspaper, but on getting the account these had bee charged for. The receptionist did immediately amend the account when I told her, but it just another item in the long list what is wrong with the hotel.

Why so many people write 4/5 star reviews about this hotel is beyond belief, but we will never stay there again or for that matter any other Best Western establishment.

Room Tip: Stay in the rooms on the front of the hotel and to the right of the building as these are away from...

This hotel is clean, comfortable but not quiet. We had an issue with a noisy hot water pipe, which kept us awake all night (room 415) however, our complaint was dealt with professionally and we were upgraded to a superior room.

The doors of the rooms are heavy with self closing mechanisms which make the doors SLAM SHUT. This is irritating when guests return to their rooms after you have gone to bed.

We were with a group (Trayn) and dispute the hotel being very busy, the food was excellent and the service extremely good.

The comments, from other guests, that follow this comment are good appraisals of this hotel and we would recommend.

My experience here was nothing short of exceptional. I checked in yesterday for a 1 night stay. Booking had been made online via Best Western site. Slightly miffed that had I got my act together and booked a couple of nights in advance (via LateRooms) I could have got a better deal. HOWEVER, I was treated so well I wonder whether they thought I was a mystery shopper?? Tina checked me in - she was great and upgraded me. The room was fab, lots of nice touches. Dinner was really good, I had scallops followed by salmon; quality and portion size great with no room left for pud. Really couldn't fault it. Don't know whether staff look out for and take care of women travelling alone? Was in the area attending a couple of business meetings and really appreciated being taken such good care of. Breakfast this morning was yummy - can confirm the local yogurt (that does look a little lumpy) was in fact really tasty. Poached eggs cooked to perfection, plenty of fresh coffee. Top marks to the team, thank you.

Room Tip: If you want a superior double, cant go wrong with 309. Great view of the garden and look out for th...

I would recommend this hotel. The staff, the food, the room and the location were all 1st class. The fitness room could do with upgrading and also if it was situated in a room with natural day light would make it more user friendly. The location is ideal for the town centre with only a 10 minute walk then you are in the centre.
