Having read a few of the reviews I was somewhat concerned about the afternoon tea someone had bought for us at this hotel however I need not have been. The Old Swan is a faded elegance hotel and has probably not see many changes since the infamous Agatha Christie visit. Afternoon tea is taken in the lounge which is an ordinary, somewhat utilitarian room and could be anywhere. This was a shame but it was the only negative point of an otherwise lovely experience.
A traditional range of sandwiches were produced... egg mayonnaise, tuna mayonnaise, salmon & cream cheese and cheese and chutney on a variety of breads (white, granary, multigrain). All had the crusts removed and the bread was very fresh (and we are fussy).
For those with a sweet tooth... sandwich cake, macaroons, a scone with jam & clotted cream and some choux pastry swans with cream. Delicious. Coffee and tea were of an average standard for a UK hotel, refills were offered and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Extra sandwiches were produced for minimum cost and baby enjoyed her side order of toast to go with her picnic.More
