“Beautiful Hotel, Lovely Wedding!”
Reviewed 14 May 2009

We stayed here as it was the venue of our friend's wedding. It is absolutely beautiful and in an amazing location a very very short walk to parks, town restaurants etc! The front lawns with the blossom trees were gorgeous! We checked in, and although the receptionist was a little short, the rest of the staff were polite, friendly, helpful and funny throughout our stay! Our room was a fantastic size! We booked through late rooms and so got an executive room for cheaper than it was to book a normal room through the hotel. The bathroom was spotless and modern, the bed comfy (although it wasn't kingsize) and there was plenty of room to relax. We didn't get breakfast, this was around £13 extra, so we went to the Wetherspoons, which is literally down the road and a fraction of the price!
It you have a wedding or other function coming up at this hotel, I definitely recommend that you stay here! Book on late rooms or a similar website and the cost will significantly reduce. We were tempted to book another cheaper hotel, but are very pleased now that we didn't. Also, if you're looking for somewhere to hold your wedding then this hotel would be a fantastic option! The function rooms are clean and nicely decorated and the staff lovely. Plus, your photos would be gorgeous!

The hotel was bright, clean and welcoming. Parking was right outside the entrance and we were offered help with our bags to the room. The room was large with a double bed (might have expected a king size but not a problem). The bathroom was nice with bath and shower over. We had breakfast in the dining room which was a beautiful room and the food was fine. The only negatives with our stay was the heat in the room which we could not control, it was too hot but it was not cold outside and my wife said the pillows were too hard. Overall I would recommend this hotel as it is in a very convenient location near the centre of Harrogate.

This hotel was the choice of friends who we were meeting for reunion weekend due to it's location mid way between our homes - they picked it based on the brochure description. On the plus side it is in an excellent location within easy walking distance of the centre of Harrogate on a quiet side street. There is parking but what they don't tell you is that it's way behind the hotel, it's unclear what belongs to the hotel and what to others and it's quite a walk back with no help offered with your bags. Our room was dreadfully disappointing. We were paying a 'special' rate of £134 for a double room B&B. For this we got a shoebox room with a horrible view of the roof of other parts of the hotel. The room was so small that we couldn't walk past each other. The TV was old and had trailing wires across the floor which was clearly dangerous. Neither bedside light worked. The decorations and furniture were tired and old e.g. dirty marks on the wall. The bed had dark hairs on it when we arrived - yuk! The room was stuffy and the window only opened a crack. The bathroom was so small that we could hardly squeeze into it. The fixtures were old and tired with peeling bath panel. The toiletries are cheap and basic. The public areas whilst being quite grand from an architectural perspective (a positive) are tired in terms of furnishings and decoration and not overly clean (a real negative). The staff were generally quite willing if your needs were spelt out for them but displayed no intitiative e.g. if I'm drinking coffee in the bar it strikes me as rather silly to choose that time to clean out the machine thereby taking it out of action & then roll your eyes when I ask you to go to the kitchen for it instead. The dining room for dinner was absolutely empty - we were the only table - and yet when my friend chose a table on the side that was pointed out to us she was asked to choose another as that one wasn't 'properly set up' . The food was ok but choice was poor & quality not great. Also they brought us a bottle of wine that whilst the same grape wasn't the actual one we had chosen & was £12 per bottle more! Luckily I noticed before they opened it. Breakfast was basic and service not good. We had to ask for simple things like cutlery, butter, & for dirty plates to be moved. When we checked out a mistake had been made on our bill and we had been over-charged. This was put right without question or fuss. Overall this was over-priced, poor value and certainly not recommended. We normally stay in boutique hotels which are infinitely superior in quality and much better value.

I stayed with my girlfriend for only one night but wish it could have been more. We felt very welcome by all staff and at all levels. Our room was huge with gorgeous views of the gardens and couldn't hear any noise apart from the birds. I could tell a lot of money had been spent on the hotel as everything was fresh and new. The restaurant was very efficient and the food was superb. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the park and town. If you're looking for a stay to relax, refresh, reinvigorate yourself then you can't get much better than the Old Swan.

Stayed for Easter weekend. The best thing about this hotel was the staff, very helpful, happy to do anything we asked (especially the front desk). The room was a larger room and was quite big but very overheated. Bathroom was huge. Bed was large and comfortable. Room was clean. Breakfast was suprisingly efficent and pleasant for a hotel buffet breakfast. The location is good, only 5 mins walk from town and the baths etc. There is no minibar which I thought was poor for a 4 star hotel. Pleasant stay in a lrage traditional hotel, but no wow factor.

The Hotel is beautiful and it is very clean. The view from our rooms left a lot to be desired but the rooms were good. The food was superb and the Operations Manager was extremely helpful and hardworking. However, I wish we had read the reviews on Tripadvisor before our stay, because my Daughter-in-law left her handbag in their room on Saturday evening whilst going down to the dining room for dinner. She had in fact 'hidden' the bag and it was still 'hidden' on their return from dinner. On waking early on Easter Sunday morning, she needed to use her handbag and found that someone had been in it and had taken approximately £500, leaving all her cards etc. in the bag. The Police were called and they said they were considering putting some sort of surveillance on the Hotel. Our Son was impressed by this, but we now know, after reading the reviews on this site, that they were definitely not the first to have money stolen in this way. Our Son and Daughter-in-law locked the room as they left for dinner and it was still locked on their return. This ruined our whole weekend which, for personal reasons, needed to be a relaxed, stress-free, weekend. There are obviously serious security problems at the Hotel.

We found this a pleasant hotel to stay in. It is centrally located and is in a huge old fashioned building. Harrogate generally has some lovely old buildings.

The room was clean and freshly decorated with what appeared to be a new en suite bathroom.

Our only complaint was that the room was on the small side and very stuffy. The weather was not particularly hot by any means but the room still felt very stuffy even with the radiator switched off and the window open. It would have been unbearable in June or July.

The room was nice and quiet at night though which meant we got a good night's sleep.

We didn't really eat in the hotel - we only had breakfast one day but be aware that breakfast is around £15 pp and you can get the same 2 minutes up the road at Weatherspoons for £3!
