“Great day out and historically fascinating”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Have been here several times and enjoy the range of facilities. You can visit the castle, which is one of the oldest and best preserved in England, and has belonged to the Ingilby family since the 13th century I think. The gardens are lovely. My daughter had her wedding reception here, and everyone enjoyed the experience and were complimentary . There is a nice cafe/restaurant serving local produce, and a couple of (rather expensive) shops…one selling food and drink and the other souvenirs and knick-knacks. If you wish, you can eat at the Boar's Head Hotel, but in terms of value for money and service, I wouldn't rate it that highly….a bit pretentious without having the quality and sophistication to back it up. But a good place to visit with lots of historical interest.

“Lovely village and castle”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We caught the number 36 bus and if you ask for a Heritage voucher on the bus you can get the admission for half price which is £5.25. The castle is guided tour only but has certain days on which you can look around yourself with guides being available for questions. There is plenty to see and you can relax but the river or with a picnic as we saw others doing. There are also nice walled gardens to see. We had a drink at the local pub the Boars Head who have a nice beer garden to relax in. There is also the famous Ripley ice cream. There were queues for this all day and we didnt partake but it looked delicious.
Well worth a trip and is only around 20 mins on the bus.

“Ripley meander”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

A charming village , graced by the Castle and facilities : Gallery : Delicateness etc in the Courtyard.
Always enjoy visit including walk around the estate , through the attached woodlands and village itself . The Castle and home is a ' second tier Stately Home ' and totally enjoyable for its relaxed atmosphere - ease of access and fascinating family history going back at least 700 years - probable more
In the area ? , then a should visit specially on a summer afternoon.

“Spacious and relaxing”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Visited on a Monday, just the gardens, we didn't visit the house. Not at all crowded. The cafe is outside the grounds so can be visited separately. Prices reasonable for drinks ( £2.50 for latte £1.60 for pot of tea)
Interesting descriptions of buildings and gardens but signage requires a bit of maintenance. Walled gardens probably the most interesting part which includes the kitchen garden.
A range of easy walks beside the lake and through the gardens.
Shop has a god range of card and gifts

“Very interesting castle/house to visit”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Looks more like a house than a castle and feels the same inside. Guided tour was full of little stories and info - very interesting and amusing. At the top is a room untouched from the 15th century with wooden panels and display of armour and guns from the civil war all on a snooker table. Lake with waterfalls and walks round the lake possible.
