“My heart sinks...”
Reviewed 29 July 2011

My heart sinks every time a colleague suggests the Hotel du Vin in Harrogate. What was 5yrs ago a nice hotel has not only taken its reputation for granted but has sat on it's laurels while the interior falls into decay. Cracked wash-hand basins, scummy paintwork, noisy and drab rooms all make for a average to poor stay. But what's inexcusable is the v poor service and standard of food! If it were even half decent I'd happily pay the premium prices but frankly I'm not sure it can be considered even average. I don't tend to criticise hotels quite so strongly but the HdV in Harrogate frankly has driven me to it.

We stayed in one of the suites in the loft. Fantastic design, very roomy, double baths! Great food and drink selection. A great treat.

Stayed for 1 night on our way home from 5 nights in Paris .We had a big room overlooking the Stray. The bed was comfortable .The bathroom had a large free standing bath and a separate shower. We ate in the bistro and enjoyed delicious food which tasted much better than our meals in Paris. Car parking was easy just outside the hotel and we could see our car from the room. We found the staff very friendly and helpful and would definately stay here again.

Booked the offer which included dinner and a bottle of wine and thought it was excellent value. Lovely location right in the centre of Harrogate overlooking the Stray. Had to move rooms due to problems with plumbing not working but this was dealt with efficiently and felt the staff couldn't do enough to make amends. The restaurant manager and lady on reception were particularly helpful. The evening meal was very good and we were pleased we had chosen this option. The bed was large and extremely comfortable with crisp white bedding. The walk in monsoon shower was vast and the bathroom was very well equipped with freestanding bath and nice toiletries. Some areas of the hotel are starting to look a little tired especially in the reception/bar area and could do with some refurbishment. The rear terrace is a bonus, it is nice to be able enjoy a drink outside when the weather is good. Will definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel

We booked the hotel on the strength of the others in the chain in which we've stayed (Edinburgh, Cheltenham & Newcastle). Public areas were very clean, tidy and characterful. We had a superior room which was a good size though was looking a little tired. We only really used the hotel to get changed for our visit to Van Zeller ( see review) so cannot really comment on any other of the facilities other than the bar. We got back around midnight and were the only people there. The barman was excellent discussing at length the extensive whisky range with me. At no point did we feel rushed to leave.
Would definately use the place again.

We booked one of the loft suites and we were thrilled with the standard of the room. It was worth paying the little bit extra for a lot more luxury. The bathroom was amazing. The staff were all pleasant. We stayed mid-week and it is clearly a business hotel but also popular with locals for post-work drinks. The central location was brilliant.

Finding negatives in a hotel stay sadly seems all too easy at times these days - however I can honestly report that the Hotel du Vin, across the road from the Stray in the centre of this Yorkshire spa town, bucks that trend.

From the welcome afforded to my guide dog and I, to the quality and innovation of my bedroom, the professional and friendly service, and the excellent standard of breakfast, the hotel and its staff were quite faultless.

Highlights of my one night stay included being moved to the larger "Peter Lehrmann" room, with its adjoining lounge area, to give my very large dog a bit more space; relaxing in the large freestanding bath in the bedroom; and enjoying one of the freshest hotel breakfasts I've had in a long while.

Overall my staywas comfortable and relaxing, and I shall definitely be back.
